Progressive Groups Opposing Michigan Governor Drug Testing Welfare Recipients
The ACLU and Democratic opponents feel this is unfair discrimination of the poor.
“Other groups, like the American Civil Liberties Union argue that drug testing welfare recipients discriminates against poor people who don’t use drugs at a higher rate than the general population.
We give out tax credits to schools, we give out tax credits to students, we give out tax credits to police and fire (departments),” Sen. Vincent Gregory, D-Southfield, said earlier this year on the Senate floor, AP reported. “And yet the only (group) that we are now saying is subject to drug screening are the poor — the poorest of the poor.”
Looks like another cruel and wasteful Republican Governor wants to continue to give tax breaks to the very rich while creating ghetto-like conditions for the majority of the working poor. Michigan has rebounded somewhat from the Auto Bailout, but it can’t survive EIGHT long years of a Governor Snyder without substantial suffering by most Michiganders.
Michigan has roughly 80,000 welfare recipients, 21,000 of them adults age 18 and older who could be subject to drug testing depending on which counties were selected for the pilot.
The program will be tested in three counties, then if it proves successful, the entire state’s adult welfare recipients would be tested. This will certainly cost the state far more than it would recover because welfare recipients use drugs at statistically lower rates than the general population. Michigan is just another example of poor-shaming and discrimination at the hands of a radical Tea Party Governor.

The poor have to much money they might spend it on something that they enjoy.
Jack E Raynbeau December 28th, 2014 at 20:35
So we’ll pay some drug testing company (owned by whom?) to make sure that they don’t alter their perception.

I wonder if Governor Snyder will profit from the drug tests like Florida’s Governor?
Dwendt44 December 28th, 2014 at 20:23
And how many of those that got positive results were false positives, how many had a reason to be on drugs??
Jack E Raynbeau December 28th, 2014 at 20:36
Bingo. And who owns those drug companies? Follow the money.

There is something inherently obscene about people who are not required to take drug tests having the ability to require other people to take drug tests.
I thought right wingers were so adamantly opposed to politicians passing laws that only affect other people but not them.
If you ask me, this is just another example of right wingers having no core principles. And if you did not ask me, it is still another example of right wingers having no core principles.

One could argue every elected official and any one that takes a TAX credits should be required to take a drug test.

Clever, clever using this ploy to divide us proletariat.
Greatest trick the 1% ever pulled is dividing those below them against each other.

Wow! What a bunch of clueless haters! Thank God my home state of Florida doesn’t drug test…its…..welf…….
I’ll be over here drinking a beer, if anyone wants to talk about “Family Guy”…

Hey c’mon now, they don’t test EVERYONE on the dole.
Hirightnow December 28th, 2014 at 19:15
Nope:legislators are exempt from drug testing.

It’s always been interesting to me. I’ve had three vocations/ credentials. U.S. Navy aircrewman, Police officer and professional driver.
The vocation that did not require drug testing, routine physicals, or mandatory rest was Police officer.
I had access to more drugs than Limbaughs maid, carried weapons and could work doubles on a routine basis. A school bus driver is checked for drugs and alcohol routinely and randomly

And the reason the authorities give is usually along the lines of “Other peoples lives depend on you being drug-free”…granted, there were some good opportunities to hurt people in the USN if you were too stoned, but I knew people who showed up for their shifts more than a little drunk. (Hell, one guy was on Antabuse and still drank!)
The stoners were usually the better techs.

A good friend of mine’s brother worked the silos under North Dakota…he was the guy that with his Air Force partner would have to decide the ultimate.
Drug of choice? LSD. Why? Because couldn’t tell if he was a druggie without a spinal tap.
Scared me…and still does.

Agreed. I recall the days over at NAS Norfolk where there were strippers at the club, and half the patrons were in flight suits. Nobody really cared, but if you walked across the waves cage lawn, security would chase you.
Later on I began to realize the 12 hour “bottle to throttle” rule wasn’t enough. During preflight we’d brainstorm who was the least hammered/hangover and that person would do the takeoff while the other slept. Things got real when a crew flew into a mountain 200 feet below the top. That’s about the time I began to spend more time at the gym and less at the club.

I doubt it. But, if so, I might support this policy.
