Heartwarming Racial Profiling Story Goes Viral, Solves Racism

After months of bitter, heartbreaking stories about young (and not so young) unarmed black men being killed by police, sometimes right on videotape, there’s finally a story of racial profiling to warm the hearts of brutality-weary Americans. In something of a Christmas miracle, two black teenagers were racially profiled, approached by a white authority figure, failed to immediately obey commands, yet lived to tell the tale. One key difference is that the authority figure who approached them was not a cop, but rather was Leigh Anne Tuohy, mother of Tennessee Titans offensive lineman Michael Oher, inspiration for the film The Blind Side, and owner of multiple Taco Bell restaurants. On Sunday, Tuohy taught her friend an object lesson about racial profiling, and told all of Facebook about it:

We see what we want! It’s the gospel truth! These two were literally huddled over in a corner table nose to nose and the person with me said “I bet they are up to no good” well you know me… I walked over, told them to scoot over. After 10 seconds of dead silence I said so whats happening at this table? I get nothing.. I then explained it was my store and they should spill it… They showed me their phones and they were texting friends trying to scrape up $3.00 each for the high school basketball game! Well they left with smiles, money for popcorn and bus fare. We gave (sic) to STOP judging people and assuming and pigeon holing people! Don’t judge a book by its cover or however you’d like to express the sentiment! Accept others and stoping seeing what you want to see!!! #LeighAnnesSundaySermon #BelieveInOthers

The post quickly racked up a six-figure “like” total, and started the conversation on race that our country so sorely needs…READ MORE

althought her gesture was a kind one, i think she should have straightened her friend out. 2 black boys sitting in a restaurant means not a DAMN thing. nor do i think she should have approached them. a white man was recently arrested (73 y/o) for sitting in a mall parking lot for viewing child porn, if this same man was in the restaurant viewing porn using their free wi-fi, (not in her friends view of the content) would she have wondered what he was viewing and made the comment, “i bet he’s up to no good?” B’TCH!

And, she offered them weekend jobs, right? No, just gave the a little money and sent them off to the ballgame?

    • whatthe46 December 16th, 2014 at 18:59

thanks for that post. it never crossed my mind. you’re absolutely right.

    • Kick Frenzy December 16th, 2014 at 19:36

      Is this a problem?
That maybe she didn’t have any work to give them… or maybe they didn’t need work and were just short money that day?

Are you saying she was nice, but… she wasn’t nice enough?

      • tiredoftea December 16th, 2014 at 21:46

No, just saying that she went to their table to quell any mischief she assumed was going on, then discovered that they were just like teenagers all over the country looking for a way to be with friends.

Being generous is never a bad thing, but since the article made such a big deal about her son and her friend, it occurred to me that she might have offered them jobs. It seems that she would have mentioned any job offers, as the article is written.

        • Kick Frenzy December 20th, 2014 at 15:46

I get it… but you’re also coming from the wrong angle.
She didn’t go over to quell mischief, she went over to prove nothing was going on.
She didn’t pre-judge them and that’s her point… not to pre-judge people, regardless of how they look.

So, who knows… maybe she didn’t have any jobs to offer them.
Maybe she just didn’t think of it.
But whether she did or not, she was generous with helping them out a bit and tried to lead by example, showing that just because black boys are huddled over a phone, it doesn’t mean they’re up to no good.

          • tiredoftea December 20th, 2014 at 16:48

No, I’m saying that the proper response to her fearful friend when she said “I bet they are up to no good” was to say “They are minding their own business and you have no reason to say that” and not disturb the kids. She doesn’t get a pass on interfering with them and then patting herself on the back on social media for her largess.

Yes, it turned out OK, but what she did was wrong.

            • Kick Frenzy December 20th, 2014 at 17:14

              Ok… gotcha. I largely agree.
But I’m not really offended by the way she handled the situation.

That’s just the type of person she is… regardless of skin.
She’s like that girl who can call everyone “Honey” and get away with it, somehow always making it sound friendly with a touch of maternal instinct.

I mean… have you seen The Blind Side?
She acts that way towards anyone, whether they’re random black kids in her store or a white football coach.

    I don’t get the backlash.

She simply proved her acquaintance wrong.
Then she helped out a bit.
Not because they’re black kids, but because they’re kids who could use a hand that day.

The way she barged in on their table has nothing to do with race either, it’s just the way she is.
We all know that type of person who just slides right into a situation and you can’t be angry at them because they’re all smiles.
Sometimes they offer more help than needed or go about things a little less than with perfect tact, but that doesn’t mean they’re privileged white people coddling black kids for their own benefit.

Sometimes people just like being nice.
