Sydney Hostage-Taker ID’d As Accused Sex Criminal

Australia’s News 9 television and other sources have identified the gun-wielding hostage-taker behind the siege at a Lindt café in Sydney, Australia as Man Monis, an Iranian-born refugee and self-styled “spiritual healer” who claims expertise in “astrology”. He has a long criminal history, including 40 sex crime charges:

A self-proclaimed spiritual healer, who was charged with sexual and indecent assault offences earlier this year, has had another 40 offences added to his name.

Mohammad Hassan Manteghi, 49, also known as Man Monis, appeared in court in April on one count of sexual intercourse without consent and two counts of indecent assault, where he was refused bail.

It’s alleged Mr Manteghi, who claims to be a spiritual healer, advised a 27-year-old woman in 2002 to visit him at his business in Wentworthville in Sydney’s west after she contacted him through a ‘Spiritual Consultation’ ad in a community newspaper.

The woman was indecently assaulted during her first consultation with Manteghi in August 2002.

A week later at their next meeting, the woman was allegedly sexually assaulted.

The state’s sex crime squad has been investigating and officers charged Manteghi at his appearance at Penrith Local Court on Friday with fresh offences.

Australian news daily The Age provides several more details about a guy who clearly has issues:

Self-described cleric, Man Haron Monis, 50, first came to attention of police when he penned poisonous letters to the family of dead Australian soldiers seven years ago.

Last year he was charged with being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife and mother of two.

And he seemed like such a nice man.

A new-agey Islamic “ladies man” with a criminal record. Sounds like a premise for an HBO comedy series starring Sasha Baron Cohen.

I wonder if he’s the guy who wrote me on a dating site? They sound so much alike. I’m lucky like that.

I’l have to ask Gene (the admin). There was a similar problem with someone at FON. I *think* the law forbids me making contact due to privacy concerns. But now you have me worried, too.

        I sure hope she’s OK.

    • Larry Schmitt December 15th, 2014 at 12:01

If people can’t take even the smallest steps to protect themselves, like staying away from people who assault you, how is anyone else supposed to protect them?

Why is this in News Behaving Badly?
Shouldn’t it be in the Religion forum? After all, the guy’s faith seems to be a motivator, and that’s the place where kooks and crazies are deemed representative of the whole group.
That way, it could be determined that all Muslims are guilty of sex crimes and murder, the same way all Christians are determined to be just like the parade of kooks that forum is devoted to.

I mean, come on, it’s not as if that forum will ever give a balanced portrayal of any faith, right?

    • whatthe46 December 15th, 2014 at 19:33

his faith did not seem to be a motivator, he used religion as a means to sexually assault his victims who were “faithful.” big difference.
