Police: Austin Shooter Was A Right-Wing Homegrown Terrorist

Posted by | December 1, 2014 20:20 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Top Stories

The Austin shooter, who targeted “multiple downtown buildings” before dawn on Friday with about 100 shots ringing out into the dark streets, is described by authorities as a right wing extremist.

Larry McQulliams harbored extremist right-wing views and appeared to be planning a broader attack against churches and government facilities, according to what law enforcement officials said Monday.

CBS News reports:

…McQuilliams had multiple weapons, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, a water supply and a map of 34 downtown buildings that likely were potential targets in his pre-dawn rampage the day after Thanksgiving, Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said.

McQuilliams, 49, started his attack on the consulate building and a federal courthouse. He was killed by a single shot to the chest from a police officer as he shot at police headquarters, Acevedo said. McQuilliams fired about 200 rounds, but no one else was killed or injured.

“The one mistake he made was he came to the Austin police station and we were able to take him out pretty quickly,” Acevedo said, who described McQuilliams as a convicted felon and as a “homegrown, American extremist” and “terrorist.”

McQuilliams’ had rented a van that was parked outside the police station and was loaded with ammunition and propane fuel canisters typically used for camping. McQuilliams tried to use fireworks with the canisters to make crude but ineffective bombs and used some at the Mexican Consulate, causing a fire that was quickly extinguished.

Investigators were seen removing dozens of fuel canisters from McQuilliams’ apartment the day after the shooting, the Associated Press observed.

Included in the contents of the van was a copy of “Vigilantes of Christendom,” a 1990 book associated with the Christian Identity movement known as the Phineas Priesthood, which espouses anti-Semitic and racist views.

A handwritten note inside the book referred to McQuilliams as a “priest in the fight against anti-God people,” Acevedo said.

Written across his chest were the words, “Let me die,” Acevedo said.

McQuilliams had served about seven years in federal prison for bank robbery and was released in 2000. As a convicted felon, he could not legally possess the firearms he used in his attack. Acevedo said investigators are still trying to determine how he got them.

McQuilliams’ Facebook page also referenced Ron Paul, as well as an aversion to paying taxes. He wrote,”Stop buying other people stuff with my tax money!”

Stop paying for wars with mine.

Reminds me of the guy who opened fire from the Texas Tower in the early 60s.
The main difference was that guy actually hit people he shot at, but this buffoon fired 200 rounds and didn’t even wing anyone…..

        • Spirit of America December 3rd, 2014 at 11:17

He really had a brain tumor?
(and I’m really asking, I didn’t hear that, but that would add a very important detail to this episode., in my view)

Yes he did…He knew something was wrong but couldn’t stop himself…he knew he would die and wanted to have the world find out why…it tumor was near the impulse control area.. I don’t recall if he complained of a history of headaches or not

I’m sorry an autopsy was done but no tumor was found. He was a shallow narcistic guy who had just about run his string out so he decided to go out as a mass murderer.I remember it well.
I was in Uvalde at this time well outside of Austin and a lot of people were quite upset about it.
It was so horrible because it was so unheard of at the time.

Wouldn’t be the first time or the last.I’m wrong more than I’m right.
I will look when I get up for the title of the book I read on the subject.
I’m an old snort who never had a good memory but I was very suprised to read that there was no tumor or organic brain damage.
Like you in the words of Kinky Friedman I thougt “There was a rumor of a tumor” was valid but this book states other wise.
I ‘m going to have to go pee soon anyway so I will try to find it then if I don’t forget.

Well, I did leave 2 links. Scroll down in wikipedia to where it talks about his autopsy. There are reference links there also.

p.s. I grew up in Austin. I have lived with this story and been to the scene over a thousand times.

                    • DavidD December 3rd, 2014 at 19:33

I read both of them so i’m not so sure of my assertion.Tried to find the book here at home but couldn’t.Looked on the Internet and found the book “Sniper in the Tower which I’m pretty sure was the book i read.
I went to the index and of course could not pull up “Why he did it.”
There was something about the autopsy that did not gib with the current meme of his condition but it is looking more likely there was in fact a tumor.
Thank you for your patience and your civility.

                    • mea_mark December 3rd, 2014 at 19:54

Not everybody agreed that he did it because of the tumor. It does appear to be the leading theory and when you look at it in context with what is happening today to football players with concussions it seems plausible there is a connection. What exactly that connection is, is still not known definitively.

Whereas I bet this putz was a wannabe Cliven Bundy and Ted Nugent fan who probably had as much training with weapons as I have had with nuclear fusion engines that take us to near warp speed…..

Which is why he couldn’t hit anything smaller than a building.

      • ironman2819 December 2nd, 2014 at 17:33

Sadly, not only is it a real sign but in fact it is one of the more milder advertisements for the radical right’s mental illness that I have seen.

        • DavidD December 3rd, 2014 at 17:03

The sign may be real but that is not an official state of Texas border crossing.
Don’t let hatemongers whatever their political persuasion fool you and stay away from them.Any philosophy based on hate is dangerous.
I’m an old rural whiteman who doesn’t pack heat because I fear the consequences of doing so.I’m a third generation Texan who worked institution and seen many a guy who did something stupid with a gun and wished he hadn’t.
The gun can’t think for you and is not a magic wand that makes your trouble go away. It’s a tool but the responsibility is all on you.
I keep one on the place to protect my stock from predators and self protection but I’m backing up and calling the pros if there is trouble on the place.

            • sntduke December 3rd, 2014 at 10:32

Why is that. Occasionally , I see a man with a gun at a restaurant and more than half the time I get a chance to ask them “why the gun” they turn out to be off duty cops. They carry their guns off duty cause they know just how much bad stuff is going on out their. Why would you deny me the same right to defend myself and others around me. Look up the Luby’s Massacre. I actually had a chance to talk with the woman who testified at the Senate back in the nineties and she laments to this day that if she had been able to carry her gun unto the restaurant both her parents would be alive today, but she respected the no firearms sign posted . A gun is nothing more than a tool and in the wrong hands it can do unspeakable evil , but in the hands of the good… How about keeping the guns out of the hands of the criminals and metally sick and assume the rest of the people are probably good.

            Hey Hass
I am a 52 y/o native born Texan. If this sign exists it is someones private property. It is probably photo shopped. The basic sign above the little sayings below is what you see at every border crossing , but has been changed . The Don’t mess with Texas is the saying we came up with some 40 years ago and is by all accounts the most successful cleanup campaign ever run by a State. Don’t get caught throwing trash on the road cause you will get a big fine. See. Texas is the friendliest place in America, and I have lived wherever ,but the far west and will not ever live on our left coast. The official greeting is Howdy, but most of us don’t take kindly to criminals. We do love our guns and we are probably the the most armed state in the Country with more weapons per household than anyplace ,but say Alaska or Montana where they are still low population density and a lot of people still have to have one to eat and protect themselves from large predatory Animals. Please don’t form your opinion of the South from this Looney tune site. I come hear on occasion to see whats the “Comrades” are saying about people like me. This is one of the most hate filled sites I have ever seen. You will never see shop owners being burned out of his business hear and neighbors will help defend what is yours. I am one of those “Tea Baggers” and actually help Run a Tea Party in Allen Texas. Ok,so the gun nuts say “If you outlaw guns only the outlaws will have them!” This guy WAS an outlaw..a convicted felon. Now,maybe if there were sensible gun control legislation in place, maybe this idiot wouldn’t have got his hands on any! Just because we want gun control doesn’t mean we are all anti-gun! And the cops say he was a right winger. Any surprises here? We Liberals try to argue..persuade with THOUGHT. All CONS know is to point a gun.

That guy was not a Muslim, but there is no essential difference between him and Muslim extremists. Muslim fanatics who want to impose Sharia Law ARE right-wing. They are anti – semitic, misogynist, and fascist in their attitude. And, it is rationally undeniable that any criminal who is DETERMINED enough to get a gun WILL find a way to get one ……. regardless of ANY gun-control laws on the books; just as anyone who is determined enough to get illegal drugs WILL find a way to get them. Before anyone jumps to conclusions, I am NOT saying that there should be no official restrictions on any weapons ownership at all. I am simply saying that I know I live in the real world, and criminals …. by definition …. do not obey the law. There are over 300 million firearms in this country that are LEGALLY owned by civilians. There are tens of thousands of people in this country who, like myself, have the technical ability and tools necessary to manufacture weapons in our garages if we wanted to.

There IS manifest truth in the axiom that, “If guns are outlawed, it is the ‘OUTLAWS’ who will have guns” ……. for the simple reason that, if private ownership of firearms is outlawed …. or officially made extremely bureaucratically difficult for decent citizens …. tens of millions of otherwise law – abiding citizens will be transformed into ‘outlaws’ ……. because they will NOT give up the weapons they feel they need for their own protection in an increasingly predatory social environment.

Calm down, no one is outlawing guns and you know it.

There need to be common sense laws that make it much harder for bad guys to get guns, not keep sane, rational, reasonable people from getting them.

No laws STOP and criminal behavior, mostly they just subscribe the punishment for the person who gets caught breaking them.

And before you go calling me a gun grabber, we have a fire proof steel gun vault, looks like a bank vault, is bolted to the wall and locked at all times. It is full of guns and ammo, some of them are antiques that have been handed down for generations. There is not a right winger in the family, most family members have been in the military or law enforcement.

We libruls have guns too ya know, we just don’t think it should be so easy for criminals and crazy people to get guns.

B.T. Dubbs… crime is down all over and has been going down for decades, long before Obama got in office.

Oh, please …. when you tell me to “calm down” ….. look in the mirror, take your condescending tone, and direct it where it will really do some good.

I am not hysterical, and there was nothing in what I previously wrote above that would indicate such a frame of mind coming from me. That is your own projection. I specifically stated, “I am NOT saying that there should be no official restrictions on any weapons ownership at all.”

The salient question should be, “Do MORE ‘common sense laws’ REALLY prevent serious criminals from obtaining firearms, or do they simply throw more bureaucratic hurdles in the way of honest citizens who want to obtain firearms?” There is no such thing as COMMON sense. If good sense were really common, there would be no wars, both Barack Obama and George Bush would never have had manipulators from Goldman Sachs serving in their administrations, and no child in Africa would be starving. And WHO qualifies to be the final arbiter of what ‘common sense’ IS? If you get five people in the same room, chances are they will not be able to agree on a definition. What IS ‘common sense’ …. and what is simply bureaucratic over-reach and tyranny? Yes, of course there should be background checks. However, I have studied and met a number of determined criminals in the course of my life. Based on their own ingenuity and previous record, I see no reason to believe that ANY of them would have serious difficulty obtaining a firearm if they are on the outside of a prison …. even if all private ownership of guns were banned.

For the record, I myself am NOT a Republican …. and never have been. I have no problem with owning guns. I certainly know how to use them, but I am not a “gun nut.” I don’t even like to hunt. I prefer fishing. I would suggest, however, that if you really believe that ‘no one’ in a position of political power wants to ban private ownership of firearms, then you obviously have not been paying attention. There are members of Congress, such as Diane Feinstein and Nancy Pelosi, as well as former Attorney General, Janet Reno, who have stated publicly that they want ALL private ownership of firearms to be banned. Those are THEIR words, not mine ……. and they are not alone in that view among those who are present office-holders or veterans of the Federal political establishment. And, those who are zealous partisans of that view have demonstrated that they are relentless in the pursuit of their agenda …. regardless of their stealth tactics, their coy deceptions about their intent, and the incremental steps they must use to work toward their ultimate objective.

Prozac time for you, you are overwrought…none of those women you named said any of the stuff you said they said and none have any power beyond their one vote in congress. If they had any power, lots more stuff would have been fixed that isn’t.

You got those lies straight off of right wing propaganda sites and conspiracy theory blogs and you are letting those fear mongers get you all stirred up.

I get at least 15 e-mails a day from conservative groups with the headline, “Obama is coming for your guns!!!” and I have been getting them since the day he was elected, not the day he took office but the day he was elected, so that is all the proof you need of their real agenda.

According to those sites, Obama has signed no less than 3,000 anti gun bills even though in reality he has signed NONE!

No one even talks about it on the hill, it is a non-issue, no one is gonna do anything because the NRA has too much bribe money to spread around…so calm down.
