Police: Austin Shooter Was A Right-Wing Homegrown Terrorist

Posted by | December 1, 2014 20:20 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Top Stories

The Austin shooter, who targeted “multiple downtown buildings” before dawn on Friday with about 100 shots ringing out into the dark streets, is described by authorities as a right wing extremist.

Larry McQulliams harbored extremist right-wing views and appeared to be planning a broader attack against churches and government facilities, according to what law enforcement officials said Monday.

CBS News reports:

…McQuilliams had multiple weapons, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, a water supply and a map of 34 downtown buildings that likely were potential targets in his pre-dawn rampage the day after Thanksgiving, Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said.

McQuilliams, 49, started his attack on the consulate building and a federal courthouse. He was killed by a single shot to the chest from a police officer as he shot at police headquarters, Acevedo said. McQuilliams fired about 200 rounds, but no one else was killed or injured.

“The one mistake he made was he came to the Austin police station and we were able to take him out pretty quickly,” Acevedo said, who described McQuilliams as a convicted felon and as a “homegrown, American extremist” and “terrorist.”

McQuilliams’ had rented a van that was parked outside the police station and was loaded with ammunition and propane fuel canisters typically used for camping. McQuilliams tried to use fireworks with the canisters to make crude but ineffective bombs and used some at the Mexican Consulate, causing a fire that was quickly extinguished.

Investigators were seen removing dozens of fuel canisters from McQuilliams’ apartment the day after the shooting, the Associated Press observed.

Included in the contents of the van was a copy of “Vigilantes of Christendom,” a 1990 book associated with the Christian Identity movement known as the Phineas Priesthood, which espouses anti-Semitic and racist views.

A handwritten note inside the book referred to McQuilliams as a “priest in the fight against anti-God people,” Acevedo said.

Written across his chest were the words, “Let me die,” Acevedo said.

McQuilliams had served about seven years in federal prison for bank robbery and was released in 2000. As a convicted felon, he could not legally possess the firearms he used in his attack. Acevedo said investigators are still trying to determine how he got them.

McQuilliams’ Facebook page also referenced Ron Paul, as well as an aversion to paying taxes. He wrote,”Stop buying other people stuff with my tax money!”

Stop paying for wars with mine.

A lot of them let the hatred and delusions of granduer paint them in a corner and the only way they can come out of it is with guns blazing.
There are a lot of sane principled by their own lights conservative people out there.
This guy wasn’t one of those but a Nazi bait self crazed criminal .
That was a real good shot by the policeman so Austin got off light.
Thank God, life is hard enough without ginning up more violence and trouble.I’m really glad no one else got killed.

No they are still around in great numbers .I live in a small rural southern county and know many.We are much more than our political opinions which after all is just part of who we are.
I think many share our concern about the extreme politics and actions of the RWNJ’s among them.

That upset them? Because the police said he was upset over immigration, which I had read the same thing. He had some really insane fb posts that seemed to bear that out. Unless they too are in the fight against the anti-god people and they saw that as a mar on their “cause”. He’s dead so I can’t scream buy a dictionary, it’s called atheism.

If you are a bomb-vest wearing, western-hater, anti-semitic jihadist, yes, you too are a threat.
      (what is ” ‘roid-raging”?)

      • ExPFCWintergreen December 1st, 2014 at 23:12

On the best day he ever had, Bin Laden WISHED he was as big a threat, as clear and present a danger, to the well-being of the United States as is the average right-winger. But nice try. We have some lovely parting gifts for you.

        • Spirit of America December 1st, 2014 at 23:15

          LOL, that was funny.

          • ExPFCWintergreen December 1st, 2014 at 23:23

Nervous laughter always greets the truth when right-wingers are exposed to it. Because given their lack of facts, data, analytical ability, knowledge of history, or even powers of simple causal reasoning at least as sophisticated as those held by the common garden slug, nervous laughter is all right-wingers have.

            • Spirit of America December 1st, 2014 at 23:44

That wasn’t nervous laughter, that was a down right belly laugh cause it was you were either being sarcastic or extremely inane… I gave you the benefit of the doubt and went with you were being sarcastic and I thought it was funny. I see I shouldn’t have given you said benefit…

Now, besides you lacking any data or facts in your response(only attempted insults like most child-like people do), you want to pull up how many americans have died/was injured due to islamic terrorists (not just 1 man, all of them since that is a group) and how many americans have died due to “gun-toting, anti-immigrant, ‘roid-raging, right wing, rennfest cosplaying patriots” (the group being compared) say since… let us go with since the year 2000?
Add up all the kills/injured of both groups. Post them and then you’ll see why I was laughing.

              • ExPFCWintergreen December 2nd, 2014 at 10:05

Excellent idea. But your periodization is highly suspect. Christianity: Shall I start with, say, the Reconquista? Inquisition? Perhaps the Crusades? Salem witch trials? The blood Christians “drink” at their pagan cannibalism rituals is the blood of millions who didn’t die for others’ sins but were killed because that fanatical “faith” American right-wingers practice has been the most murderous plague ever visited upon the planet. Or should we just start with American conservatism more generally? Then we only have to count all the Africans and indigenous tribes enslaved and murdered since, say, 1650. Or how about we start at just 1900? Then all we have to do is count all the Cambodians, Laotians, Vietnamese, Salvadorans, Nicaraguans, Angolans, Mozambicans, Iraqis, Iranians, Syrians, Palestinians, Libyans, Filipinos, and Panamanians killed by the American right-wing’s military adventures. Or perhaps we should just add up all the victims of mass-casualty gun events, all of which are perpetrated by ammosexual right-wingers? Yeah, now that I look at it more closely, it’s very clear just how big a threat to America the “conservative” movement is. Gosh, I wonder when we’re finally going to start seeing some serious deportations of Republicans to these FEMA concentration camps they keep wetting their pants about? There’s clearly not enough room at Gitmo for those terrorists.

                • Spirit of America December 2nd, 2014 at 11:41

No, the ‘periodization’ is not suspect, the topic is about threats to america today, not 700+ years ago. And even than you left out much, such as the muslim conquests/pillage/destruction across africa, s. med europe, spain, etc. And TODAY in afrika and M.E. muslims are killing by the 10’s of thousands other muslims, christians and other minorities… what, we don’t include them as people? Totally diff topic. Kennedy & Johnson weren’t ‘right-wingers’ btw… you have so much attributed incorrectly and left out it is pitiful. It is all smoke and mirrors to deflect from the topic.

                  Stay on topic please.

First thing I’d like to mention is you seem to think there is and can only be one threat to america… like “oh hey, since I think this group is a threat, there aren’t any other threats out there”. That is not accurate. That is why I put ‘too’ in italics.

Second, “Or perhaps we should just add up all the victims of mass-casualty gun
events, all of which are perpetrated by ammosexual right-wingers?”
Besides being inaccurate, feel free to include those that really are due to that group. That is the point… add them up, add up the other threat group, and lets go from there.

And to reiterate, the topic is threat to america today.

(PS- if your PFC part of name = Private 1st Class, thanks for your service)

                • Spirit of America December 2nd, 2014 at 14:43

That’s not part of the topic. And many democrats voted for those as well, making it not just ‘right-wing’, since even POTUS called that the ‘just’ war.
                  Group 1 = islamist terrorists
                  Group 2 = “gun-toting, anti-immigrant, ‘roid-raging, right wing, rennfest cosplaying patriots”
He brought up both groups, and only those 2 groups, so lets stick to those groups.

Roid rage refers to steriod abuse and the shooter was a body builder.I don’t know if he used them.
A lot of outlaws and predators hang out at Ren fests.I used to work them on top of my steady job for extra money.
Most of the people who work there are good honest people but the other ones are around.

          • ExPFCWintergreen December 2nd, 2014 at 00:23

Nervous laughter always greets the truth when right-wingers are exposed to it. Because given their lack of facts, data, analytical ability, knowledge of history, or even powers of simple causal reasoning at least as sophisticated as those held by the common garden slug, nervous laughter is all right-wingers have.

            • Spirit of America December 2nd, 2014 at 00:44

              • ExPFCWintergreen December 2nd, 2014 at 11:05

                • Spirit of America December 2nd, 2014 at 12:41

Does ExPFCWintergreen get to include all the dead in Iraq and Afghanistan would should be attributed to Mr. Bush?

                • tracey marie December 2nd, 2014 at 15:11

are you kidding, theose types blame clinton for the bush first term and Obama for the bush 2nd term

                • Spirit of America December 2nd, 2014 at 15:43

I wouldn’t let my kids run around un supervised and would not be alone at one as a female.

                • Spirit of America December 3rd, 2014 at 21:47

Ahhh, steroid… I see it now. Actually thought it might be something to do w/robotics or something, soulless…
                  appreciate the clarification!!

Like many far right extreme racist domestic terrorists, his plan was ended by a single policeman. The cop fired one shot killing the “Christian Identity” terrorist while holding two horses he was putting away for the evening.

A single shot from one policeman vs 200 shots and many homemade bomb duds from the Christian Identity anti-Semite racist follows his dead ender Christian Identity/ Patriot movement and Sovereign citizen anarchist (R) Ron Paul nuts. I’m waiting for someone to ask why the cop didn’t “shoot to wound” him…

I bet the right-wing crazies will be more upset with the police chief calling him a “right-wing terrorist” than with the mayhem the shooter caused.

Can we call these conservative extremists “terrorist sympathisers” yet?

    • Megalith December 4th, 2014 at 11:25

I can find the names of dozens of extreme left wing terrorists who’ve killed multiple people with shooting sprees and bombs. Where’s the long list of extreme right wing terrorists and their death toll? That’s a very small list with a small kill total because extreme right wing terrorists are a rare bird. Notice this guy didn’t kill anyone, and he had multiple opportunities to do so. Additionally, labeling this guy as right wing is a long stretch. The lack of evidence proving his political affiliations doesn’t support the Austin PD’s claim. Got any other false preconceived notions you’d like to throw out there?
