Peter Yarrow, On Combining Music And Activism

Posted by | November 22, 2014 15:00 | Filed under: Politics Radio Interviews Top Stories

Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary has spent a lifetime combining his music with the fight for civil rights and justice. We discussed his years relationships with Paul Stookey and the late Mary Travers, and how he uses music to fight for social justice and peace. Yarrow described what it was like playing at the 1963 March on Washington right before Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. And we addressed the myths around the song he co-wrote, “Puff the Magic Dragon.” And, thankfully, he brought his guitar. His new book tells the story of his legendary group.

I am happy that he uses his fame for the greater good. But damn, now that song is going to run through my head all day. Actually, both songs. I’m already looking for a hammer.
