Obama Derangement Syndrome may have reached a new peak last week when President Obama was literally criticized for walking and chewing gum at the same time. As everyone knows, President Obama has long struggled to kick his smoking habit (Marlboros, not Newports), and drew jeers from Chinese bloggers last week for chewing nicotine gum while walking with Chinese President Xi Jinping last Tuesday. Naturally, the conservative media was delighted by the flap, but the mainstream media reported on it as well.

Now in Brisbane, Australia for the G20 Summit, President Obama has done it again. Watch…READ MORE

Just one more example of “Obama’s lawless behavior”…:)

It’s not bad enough that he occasionally smokes a cigarette, now he has lowered himself to chewing gum..

“walking and chewing gum at the same time.” The envy and venom from the right as they realize they have no members who can duplicate the feat.

The china incident was at best a major faux pas, as you pointed out even the chinese blogs went nuts. And most of those blogs/papers are state-run or approved. By letting them shout about it, Xi scored a ‘social’ victory for home… the chinese people were able to say(and did in latter reporting/editoralizing on it) “See our leader, how gratious and over-looking he is to POTUS”(paraphrased from many writings, look up internal sites there, some weren’t as ‘respectful’ in naming potus). The problem? In china, it isn’t considered ‘rude’ to chew while meeting w/a person, it is considered a purposeful insult. And when in rome…..

Now, when the right started making hay about it, they put the blame on the wrong person… Foggy bottom has a team of people, per region, that instruct cabinet level on up on certain things to do and/or avoid each trip. They should have informed him of it, knowing his habit w/the gum. Not only that, since at least 1 protocol adviser always travels w/him, that officer should have noted to contact the pres(via ss radio) before exiting the car to ensure the pres takes it out.

Regardless of whether protocol was or was not followed, the fact that right wing media in this country are marching in lockstep with the propaganda division of a dictatorial government, reconfirms all of my worst suspicions about the right wing in general and critics of the President in particular.

they are amoral, hypocrites concerned with nothing other than scoring political points. Whether it means writing love notes to Vladimir Putin or siding with foreign propaganda against the President of the United States, these people consistently demonstrate by their own actions that nothing is more important than their agenda of hatred of Mr. Obama, and to he-l-l with what is best for the country (e.g. when politics used to stop at the water’s edge).

If you have ever wondered why so many of my posts express such complete contempt for most right wingers, this is an excellent example which should answer that question.

Not sure what you are saying… are you saying if a president makes a mistake overseas it shouldn’t be reported here? Because reporting an event isn’t the same thing as taking sides of the event. Because if so, were you upset they reported on bushSr. getting sick in japan(that made news for days, many mocked him and clinton’s campaign friends even had it in at least one of their commercials). Now that being said, again, I believe they are overlooking the real culprits, DoS… and no one has been fired for it yet.

Also, ‘politics stops at the waters edge’ is about national security/war/tensions stuff, not the day-to-day foreign policy stuff. But even then, I recall dems making a lot of hay w/the “mission accomplished'” banner, while at war…

No, it was a combination of the flu and playing a doubles match of tennis earlier in the day w/Akihito and Naruhito.
However, a mistake is a mistake is the point, report them all or not at all. And place the ‘blame’ of it where it belongs, which in this case is DoS(and that really hurts to type for personal reasons).

Would you go to a job interview chewing gum? Why would you under these circumstances? You don’t need an adviser to tell you that it’s not proper. That said, all the hoopla is a bit over the top.

We never had pictures of W chewing gum because he was unable to leave the White House when he did…he kept running into the walls. Laura had to lock up the gum when he was on the ranch in case he decided to cut brush and chew gum at the same time…shame on her. The country might not be in such a mess if she had let nature take its course.

    • Player_16 November 16th, 2014 at 09:02

There is a video of Bush walking and spitting while in office.
