A Canadian Dissects The real Problem With Americans And Disrespect For Obama

This shows how silly we look to other, more mature cultures.
Click here for reuse options! There was a time not so long ago when Americans, regardless of their political stripes, rallied ’round their president. Once elected, the man who won the White House was no longer viewed as a Republican or Democrat, but the president of the United States. The oath of office was taken, the wagons were circled around the country’s borders, and it was America versus the rest of the world, with the president of all the people at the helm
Suddenly president Barack Obama, with the potential to become an exceptional president, has become the glaring exception to that unwritten, patriotic rule…Maligning the image of the leader of the free world is one thing; putting the president’s life in peril is quite another. More than once, men with guns were videotaped at the healthcare rallies where the president spoke. Again, history shows that letting men with guns get within range of a president has not served America well in the past.
And still the “birthers” are out there claiming Barack Obama was not born in the United States, although public documentation proves otherwise…
The man is being challenged unfairly, characterized with vulgarity and treated with the kind of deep disrespect to which no previous president was subjected. It’s like the day after electing the first black man to be president, thereby electrifying the world with hope and joy, Americans sobered up and decided the bad old days were better.
President Obama may fail but it will not be a Richard Nixon default, fraught with larceny and lies. President Obama, given a fair chance, will surely succeed, but his triumph will never come with a Bill Clinton caveat—“if only he’d got control of that zipper.”
Please. Give the man a fair, fighting chance. This incivility toward the leader who won over Americans and gave hope to billions of people around the world that their lives could be enhanced by his example just has to stop.

If a Republican ever gets back in the White House, this kind of outlandish behavior and language directed toward the president will become uber un patriotic.

“There was a time not so long ago when Americans, regardless of their political stripes, rallied ’round their president.”
Fondly longing for the pre-1860s?

Political cartoons, yes. Broadsides that assassinate personal character go back to the founding of the republic, with Ben Franklin elevating it to an act form! But, this level of disrespect for the office and person holding it, that’s a different and more recent animal.

just a few of the comments from elected officials

Policy opposition, not political opposition.
Although…
What elected official called Obama a “tar baby?” What elected official called him a “blah guy?” (I’ve seen several liberals use that term to put words into other people’s mouths, but never a direct quote.) And what’s racist about “spoiled child” or “that one?”

No black guy in my white house
teabaggers and CPAC….and mike lee, the teabagger favorite

An elected official was stupid enough to say “No black guy in my white house?” Then we toss his ass out.
(No, Santorum didn’t say that about the President — he said “I don’t want to make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money.” (Source: http://wonkette.com/459620/breaking-santorum-said-something-stupid#LIc4v2TPRFbSohbC.99) And then backpedaled it into saying he said “blah people” (like that made any syntactical sense).

I do, however, find similar comments from Chris Matthews regarding primary races: “And in Georgia, five Republicans are battling for the Senate nomination. If no one gets over 50 percent, which they wont, the top two vote-getters will head on to July to a runoff for the right to take on Democrat Michelle Nunn. By the way, the reason they have these runoffs is to make sure no black guy ever won a nomination down there.”

The difference is that members of congress have led the brigade. It used to be that compromise wasn’t a dirty word. It is the way that adults get work done. That no longer exists in our government. I’ve been annoyed for years because Obama actually seems to believe that the GOP has a interest in making things work for everyone. Instead they have proven that is the last thing that they want.

Not only do republicans hate the black man in the Whitehouse, they by extension, hate America and have been actively sabotaging this administration with outright lies and deceit hoping for failure. Traitors all of them.
Spirit of America November 10th, 2014 at 14:03
Well I’ll be darned… so disagreeing with a pres’s policies makes one a racist and traitor, eh?
That would make many here racist and traitors then, for they disagreed w/the last bush’s policies, wait, strike that, it was cause he was white, right? I don’t think so.
Some here honestly disagreed w/bush’s policies, just as many just disagree w/the current pres’s policies.
And btw, deceit & lies are wrong regardless of who spawns them, no? Such as when jonathon gruber comes right out and admits the admin lied during aca battle.
Was that wrong to do to the american people? He even goes so far as to state:
“Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage. And basically, call it the stupidity of the American voter or whatever,…”

All of us Canadians feel this way, you have a great man in the White House, who has been obstructed by people who just can’t admit they lost to a black man. American politics are now sooo close to those of Germany, around 1930, the right wing radicals are trying to rule without a mandate, then successfully blaming the other side, for their treason.

The hate for Obama has more to do with race.than anything else imo. Conservative…rich… white “christians” can’t stand the fact that a very intelligent black man was elected then re-elected as president. Bigotry still runs very deep in this country and it is apparent every day by the way many people respond towards Obama. I expect that if Hillary runs and is elected in 2016 she will run into many of the same problems because she is a woman and we all know hoe Repulsives respond to them…

WOW, talk about one messed up article!
First, ‘more mature’ according to whom?
Then, who ever wrote this has no american history understanding at all.
“regardless of their political stripes, rallied ’round their president.”
After specific events(man-made or natural) this is a trend, but even then not guaranteed. Just recent history has us at war while a clamoring against the pres was taking place, calling for war crimes trials and such.
Since Gallop started taking/tracking pres popularity, the average a pres was popular hit(ONE time) 70.1 percent. The average of the pres’s since gallop is 53+ %… I wouldn’t call that ‘rallying around and no politics’ average.
“deep disrespect to which no previous president was subjected.”
burning effigies, head on a pike in a tv series… yea, the american people has never shown ‘disrespect’ to a pres before….
arc99 November 10th, 2014 at 14:20
which previous President was harassed about a birth certificate?
which previous President was interrupted by a member of Congress during the State of the Union?
which previous President was accused of lying about his religion?
which previous President was condemned for his choice of mustard?
which previous President was criticized for having his children under Secret Service protection?
which previous President had to deal with the bullsh*t of the lunch menu at his children’s school being condemned?
which previous President was accused of “taking too much credit” for the success of a high profile military mission?
yes, the American people have never shown the kind of disrespect to any previous President as this one. I will change my opinion when and only when you provide a name to answer each question above.
Spirit of America November 10th, 2014 at 17:04
I won’t because now you are saying “Only insults that I deem insulting count.”, which I find very one-sided. Bull. Burning in effigy is disrespect… war trial calls, head on pike, and so on.
The american people have habitually done it.
arc99 November 10th, 2014 at 17:51
No I am saying that no other President has been subjected to the above, which you apparently cannot dispute.
I would think that anyone regardless of their political persuasion would deem it insulting that a twice-elected President is still being harassed about a birth certificate.
And do you not think it insulting that a member of Congress shouts out “you lie” in the middle of the State of the Union.
No these are not habitual occurrences. Accusing the President of lying about his religion has nothing to do with policy and everything to do with the point of the article which is that the level of hatred and hostility is unprecedented.
tracey marie November 10th, 2014 at 14:43

Nope, it is the facts that are important. This type of disrespect has never been donbe to any other President, period. Explain baggers and birthers who still push that meme, explain the missplelled racist bagger signs. Explain the gop calling the President a “boy” tar baby, blah, userper, kenyan, terrorists and worse

Explain which is worse, assassination or name calling?
tracey marie November 10th, 2014 at 19:18
really, anyone in the many decades who was assasinated besides a Dem?
Spirit of America November 11th, 2014 at 05:46
I was told never, now we narrow it down to decades?
tracey marie November 11th, 2014 at 06:16
that is NOT an assasination
Spirit of America November 11th, 2014 at 12:23
I did say “not to mention”, meaning while not exactly, was a close call. But of the 4 assassinations, Lincoln and Garfield and McKinley were all republican, Kennedy is the only democrat.
KDee November 10th, 2014 at 23:22
Explain what is worse, an assassination attempt by a mentally ill person, or a candidate for the Senate calling for 2nd amendment remedies because she doesn’t like him or his policies? What’s worse, disagreeing with the president or actively working against him and the American public?
Spirit of America November 11th, 2014 at 05:48
I tell you what… you answer my question and then I’ll give yours a shot, fair?
OldLefty November 10th, 2014 at 15:13
The article is correct.
it is not just the riff raff, it is Congress, and there is no Joseph Welch to ask, ” Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?”
When the Birchers called Eisenhower a communist, they were relegated to the fringes.
When the columnists Joseph and Stewart Alsop were ALWAYS screaming about how weak, feckless and flaccid Eisenhower was, they remained on page B 22 of their newspapers.
John Wayne,
on the election of JFK, in 1960:
“I didn’t vote for him, but he’s my president and I hope he
does a good job.”
American Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, on the inauguration of Barack Obama in 2009
“I hope he fails”.
The chairman of the RNC went on his show to apologize for calling him “just an entertainer”.
Where is there equivalance?
KDee November 10th, 2014 at 23:18
We’ve never had members of congress showing disrespect for the president. We’ve had members not liking what the president does. Disagreements? Sure. Calling for birth certificates? No. Congress members actually calling the president a traitor? Never.
Spirit of America November 10th, 2014 at 14:55
WOW, talk about one messed up article!
“deep disrespect to which no previous president was subjected.”
burning effigies, head on a pike in a tv series… yea, the american people has never shown ‘disrespect’ to a pres before….
arc99 November 10th, 2014 at 15:20
which previous President was harassed about a birth certificate?
which previous President was interrupted by a member of Congress during the State of the Union?
which previous President was accused of lying about his religion?
which previous President was condemned for his choice of mustard?
which previous President was criticized for having his children under Secret Service protection?
which previous President had to deal with the bullsh*t of the lunch menu at his children’s school being condemned?
which previous President was accused of “taking too much credit” for the success of a high profile military mission?
yes, the American people have never shown the kind of disrespect to any previous President as this one. I will change my opinion when and only when you provide a name to answer each question above.
Spirit of America November 10th, 2014 at 18:04
I won’t because now you are saying “Only insults that I deem insulting count.”, which I find very one-sided. Bull. Burning in effigy is disrespect… war trial calls, head on pike, and so on.
The american people have habitually done it.
arc99 November 10th, 2014 at 18:51
No I am saying that no other President has been subjected to the above, which you apparently cannot dispute.
I would think that anyone regardless of their political persuasion would deem it insulting that a twice-elected President is still being harassed about a birth certificate.
And do you not think it insulting that a member of Congress shouts out “you lie” in the middle of the State of the Union.
No these are not habitual occurrences. Accusing the President of lying about his religion has nothing to do with policy and everything to do with the point of the article which is that the level of hatred and hostility is unprecedented.
tracey marie November 10th, 2014 at 15:43
that is a bunch of garbage. Bush was not President when the head on a spike from a entertainment venue NOT from Senators and Congress the way your teabaggers are.
Spirit of America November 10th, 2014 at 18:05
Oh, ok, so now it is time-delay that counts and if we take that one thing out all is ok?
