I saw one stat that said there was a 40% turn-out, can anyone verify that and if true ……..WHAT THE FRICK

That’s about right, maybe even a little high for mid-terms.

      • edmeyer_able November 5th, 2014 at 14:48

Maybe it’s time for a law which states that at least 70% of eligible voters need to show up for an election to be valid.

Personally, I think it should be a requirement. Perhaps tied to obtaining passports, or even income tax refunds.

What about the 47% who don’t even pay taxes let alone get a refund….lol.

Ha! They can move in with the Romney’s!

A little extra on the Tax refund or EITC might go a long way in getting more to the polls.

That’s what Australia does in order to ensure a true democracy of the people. They either vote…..or pay a fine.

Yeah, I had Auz in mind when I posted that. There are a couple of other countries that do the same, I believe, Costa Rica, maybe.

          We’d still have President Carter.

Actually the election should continue till a minimum of 70% show up.

I heard Texas has the lowest percentage of voters, so your idea would work magic IMO.

for most races in Texas there was not even a challemger, the gerry mandering is complete and total. gohmert won by over 70%…what does that tell you

            • Suzanne McFly November 5th, 2014 at 16:13

Anyone who ever voted for gohmert should lose their voting privileges for life.

Or make them listen to 100 hours of audio tape of him talking about the issues. If that doesn’t convince them they made a mistake nothing will.

My polling place was packed and I heard many others were as well. I am shocked by the 40%, I would of sworn it would be a lot more.

    • KABoink_after_wingnut_hacker November 5th, 2014 at 16:41

      I read it was 37%

Proportion of voters over 60 in #Election2014 was a record high. Children, you can’t be the future if you don’t show up to vote for it!

OP: ” But with an avalanche of good news about health care and the economy, and a Death Star-sized advantage on the issue of immigration reform, Democrats rolled up their sleeves and ran as hard away from that as they could. So, how’d that work out for them?”

    Horribly, I’d say.
Once again the Democrats sat idle while Republicans framed the debate and hit voters with a barrage of negatives. The Democrats should have run ads saying:

“Have you noticed [Republican candidate] is always complaining? Would electing a crybaby solve anything? [Democratic candidate] has done x, y, z to make things better. Unemployment is going down, the stock market is at record highs, deficits are dropping and millions more Americans are getting health care. Millions more are getting out of crappy policies that do nothing more than give the illusion of adequate coverage. But the Republicans just bitch, bitch bitch, as if that’s some sort of solution to anything. If you’re sick and tired of Republicans constant complaining and the way they run our country down, vote for the Democrat!”

Democrats should have turned the tables on the GOP and presented positive things while showing how negative the GOP is, all the while making it clear the GOP emphasis on negatives show the negative direction they will take the country. Instead, Democrats sat back and just reacted while the GOP shaped the races.
