Go Ahead! Vote! It’s Not Like You’re Hurting Anyone

Well, lookee here! It’s Election Day, 2014. It’s 9 AM, and I am sitting here watching television. They’re lying to us, as usual. Know how I can tell? Their lips are moving.

Gosh, I sure don’t mean to sound all cynical or anything. But, I just don’t believe a word these people say! One network is gushing over with enthusiasm, reminding us that our vote is more important than ever.

That, of course, is bullshit!

The Supreme Court made that very clear in their Citizens United ruling, augmented by their recent ruling in the McCutcheon case.

Am I telling you that you should refrain from voting? Of course not! Do whatever makes you feel good. Vote! Eat cheesecake! Masturbate! Anyone of those three choices will have as much effect on how this nation is governed over the next two years as any of the other two choices on that list.

For one thing, no matter how this thing turns out tonight, tomorrow, or in January, neither party will have 60 votes in the Senate. You need a 60 votes in the Senate to take a whiz. Oh, the networks want you to think that it will make a difference. Of course they do. They want you to watch their network. Why? Because they want to get money from advertisers who will pay them for your eyeballs.

But if you are an intelligent person, which you must be as evidenced by the fact that you are reading my column, then you must realize this is an exercise in futility!

Let’s look at it from a practical point of view.  (Right now I am looking at the television. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, is on MSNBC. It looks like the Florida humidity has done something to her hair, as it is not in its usual tight freshly permed configuration.) Let’s say some miracle occurs, and the Democrats retain their very slim edge in the Senate. The Republicans are still in firm control of the House. Therefore, nothing gets done. Period.

Let’s look at the more likely scenario. The Republicans end up with a slim majority in the Senate. The Republicans are in firm control of the House of Representatives.  The only difference, the ONLY difference, is that the Senate will be run by a slow moving, slow thinking, “Turtle Man” instead of by an angry, corrupt, banty rooster, who generates as much excitement among Democrats as arugula generates at a Texas steakhouse. If the Democrats hold on to the Senate, the House, which will be satisfied with nothing less than the impeachment, conviction, jailing, drawing and quartering of Pres. Obama, will continue their crazed, irrational attacks on the president. Harry Reid will never allow a vote on any of this craziness, and nothing gets done.

If the Republicans take the Senate, no difference. The Republicans will want to investigate how someone born in Kenya in 1961 could have possibly been the second gunman on the grassy knoll in Dallas on November 22, 1963. This will result in continued wacky, money-wasting, useless investigations. The house will pass more insanity in the form of legislation, send it to the Senate. Only now, Sen. Mitch “The Turtle” McConnell, will be the majority leader. He will have the choice of bringing issues up for consideration in the Senate. There will not be 60 votes to close debate.

Okay I hear you saying, “What about reconciliation. You remember? That thing the Republicans were so dead set against when it came to the possibility of raising the debt ceiling? Yeah!”

Now that they run the Senate, all of a sudden they’ll LOVE the concept of passing bills on reconciliation and will invent reasons for which to do so.

Of course, the president is still Barack Obama, he will veto any nonsense that somehow escapes the Senate and makes its way to his desk. And while in the whackadoo House of Representatives there may be enough support to override the veto, no way will the required votes be there to override a presidential veto in the Senate.

Therefore, control of the Senate? Who cares?

Again, I am not telling you to not vote. I am also not telling you to refrain from eating cheesecake or masturbating, if that’s what you feel like doing at some point today. And if you have a hotly contested local issue that really matters to you, then it might be a good idea to get out there and cast a ballot.

But on the national level? You’re wasting your time. More babies will be conceived over these next two years as a result of eating cheesecake and/or masturbating, than there will be meaningful legislation passed by Congress and signed by the president.

Ya got to ask yourself, who is your congressman going to listen to? Who is your senator going to listen to? You? Some schmuck sitting in a trailer with Parkinson’s disease and not two nickels to rub together? Or some guy with a truck filled with bags with big cartoon dollar signs on them which the Supreme Court says they can now give in unlimited supply to elected representatives? Who do you suppose will get your senator or congressman to move more quickly?

Thank you Supreme Court! Thank you Citizens United! Thank you corporate-owned media!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I believe I am going to go have a slice of cheesecake.

    So to sum up…

You are a progressive. Progressives are slated to have their hats handed to them. You, therefore, put up a “hey it’s not big deal if you vote it doesn’t matter anyway” post. What post would you have written if you thought your progressive candidates were going to sweep the night? Just smacks of more sour grapes….unless of course you can point to other writings of yours telling people that their vote doesn’t matter?

    • Bill Schmalfeldt November 5th, 2014 at 10:02

Why is it that all dim conservatives, whenever they see something written by a progressive that they disagree with, have to ask the question “if something was different than the story you wrote would you wrote something different about the story that you wrote? Would you?” Of course I would have written something different! If progressive had been poised to sweep the elections, this would be an entirely different set of circumstances, therefore requiring an entirely different column. But since you are the political genius here Frankie, why don’t you tell me what would be different if the Democrats had a 2 vote majority in the Senate instead of the Republicans? What would be different? What things would happen under such a scenario that will not happen under the current scenario? i’ll wait for your answer.

Thanks for not answering the question posed. The question was not “what would they do different”. The question was, “Would you have still written an article saying your vote doesn’t matter if Progressives were set to sweep the elections”. I’m not sure why you feel the need to attack a commenter for asking a very direct and simple question.

          What progressives?

What progressives were even running except those who won in blue states?

Bill can answer for himself. But I do want to point out that this is a liberal blog forum featuring liberal viewpoints.

Whether or not Bill would have written a different article under different circumstances is entirely irrelevant. He provided his opinion from a liberal point of view and he has no more of an obligation to be “objective” than any right wing pundit.

Why not head over to redstate.com or dailycaller.com and call out their columnists for not writing what you think is appropriate. See what kind of response you get from the partisans in those forums. The “attack” as you call it from Bill will seem like a gentle love-tap.

So insulting the intelligence of your readers is a acceptable form of liberal journalism. Got it. Also dodging a simple question. If the author can’t answer a simple polite question without stooping to ad hominem attacks then maybe he isn’t suited to being a writer at any public forum.
One other point. Isn’t the purpose of having a comment section so people can comment? If all you want is people that agree with you please post that in bold letters so no one else makes the mistake of trying to read both sides and ask polite questions.

you do realize the article was posted before the election results were in, right????

          • Frankie November 11th, 2014 at 10:12

I do, but even before the results were in it was clear is was going to go badly for the Democrats. I’m just tired of “Progressives” telling people their vote doesn’t count only when they think they will be on the losing end of an election. Was this author advocating people stay home during the 2008 elections? How about the 2012? Search says no he wasn’t. Only when his selected candidates are looking to be defeated does he tell people their vote doesn’t matter.
