North Carolina Voting Machine Switches Kay Hagan Vote To Thom Tillis
While Republicans are concerned over Voter ID in order to supposedly “restore the integrity of the vote,” they might want to do a few updates. In Guilford County, North Carolina, a couple of voters had a difficult time casting a ballot for Kay Hagan. Instead, the votes registered for the Republican candidate.
Percy Bostick, 69, of Greensboro said he tried casting a vote for Democrat Kay Hagan at the Old Guilford County Courthouse, only to have the machine register Republican Thom Tillis as his choice.
“I called one of the poll workers over,” Bostick said. “She said do it again. And again, I touched the screen at the proper place for Kay Hagan, and it again reported it for Thom Tillis.”
Bostick tried again, and onhis fourth attempt, the machine finally registered the vote for Hagan.
Another poll worker decided to cancel the ballot altogether and directed Bostick to an adjacent machine, where he was able to cast his ballot without any issues.
The problematic machine was taken out of service
And then on Wednesday, it happened again with another voter who reported a similar problem. That voter also tried selecting Hagan but saw the machine had recorded him as choosing Tillis.
It’s like the machines really like Tillis.
The man was moved to another machine, which finally registered his selections without any problem.
According to Charlie Collicutt, Guilford County elections director, his office has received 14 reports of voting problems since early voting started Oct. 23, including seven from people who became concerned after they got home.
Collicutt urged voters to check that the paper roll next to the screen properly registers their selections, and he said anyone having trouble should tell a poll worker.
“If a precinct official is made aware immediately, that gives us the opportunity to take the machine out of service, check it out, recalibrate it, and determine whether we can get it back into service,” he said.
The problem is, there’s no telling how many incorrect votes were cast for Thom Tillis.

They must have different kinds of voting machines/systems in dif. parts of NC…in Asheville, we fill out a paper ballot and feed it into a machine but never see the actual results come up once it’s fed to the machine. Makes me wonder if any of those get ‘switched’.

The problem with electronic voting is that any competent programmer could put up one picture and write code that doesn’t show, to let that vote go to another candidate. Or 1 in 2 of the votes, or 1 in 10 — you get the picture. My husband works in computer security — he says he could have code like this up and running in less than 2 hours.
The voting machine makers claim that their code is ‘proprietary’, and they do not have to let any one else look at the computer coding.
And we would never know.

Election fraud. If one voter fraud case is enough to create voter id laws and massive Republican butt hurt, then we need to take machines out of the equation and insist that all votes be manually registered and counted.

Asking me to prove a negative is almost impossible, as most people with a basic science and math backgroud understand. Why don’t you provide specific examples of the postive – of supression actually happening?
Considering all the things that people need ID for for basic life in this country, saying someone can’t get ID if they’re a citizen is a pretty far stretch, and I have yet to hear of a case where someone couldn’t obtain ID on their own.
Of course, unlike a lot of people, I don’t assume that just because someone is of a particular race or age group that they aren’t smart enough or resourceful enough to do what they need to do in order to function in society and carry out their duties as a citizen. If they want to vote, then they need to put on their big-girl and big-boy panties and get it done, and not complain that it was “too difficult.”

Olester McGriff, an African-American man, lives in Dallas. He has voted in several Texas elections. This year when he went to the polls he was unable to vote due to the new photo ID law. Mr. McGriff had a kidney transplant and can no longer drive; his driver’s license expired in 2008. He tried to get an ID twice prior to voting. In May, he visited an office in Grand Prairie and was told he could not get an ID because he was outside of Dallas County. In July, he visited an office in Irving and was told they were out of IDs and would have to come back another day.
He is unable to get around easily. Mr. McGriff got to the polls during early voting because Susan McMinn, an experienced election volunteer, gave him a ride. He brought with him his expired driver’s license, his birth certificate, his voter registration card, and other documentation, but none were sufficient under Texas’s new photo ID requirement.

The Wisconsin legislature is finalizing
a bill to close ten Department of Motor Vehicle centers located in Democratic
districts within the state. The money saved will be used to extend operating
hours at DMV centers in Republican districts. These cuts come on the heels of
new voter ID laws that require voters to present a state-issued photo
identification card at the poll booths.
• The new laws are likely to make it
“significantly harder” for more than five million eligible voters — “mostly
young, minority, and low-income voters as well as voters with disabilities” —
to cast ballots in 2012. They point out that that number is “larger than the
margin of victory in two of the last three presidential elections.”
• “The states that have already cut
back on voting rights will provide 171 electoral votes in 2012 — 63 percent of
the 270 needed to win the presidency.”
• Most of the 2012 battleground
states have either passed or are considering new restrictions. Some that have
passed them are considering passing even more.
During the 2004 election GOP state parties, along with dozens of
unidentified groups, launched similar “voter caging” efforts designed to challenge the eligibility of thousands of minority
voters by accusing them of voter fraud. And in 2008, the Obama campaign sued
the Michigan Republican Committee for collecting a
list of foreclosures in an effort to challenge the residency, and
eligibility, of voters who had lost their home in the housing crisis.
US ATTORNEY DAVID IGLESIAS FIRING
SCANDAL: In an unprecedented politicization of the Justice Department,
in 2006 the Bush White House fired US Attorney David Iglesias for refusing to
prosecute voting fraud cases where little evidence existed.
He said, There
appears to be a growing body of evidence that suggests that there’s voter
suppression going on throughout the country.
– US ATTORNEY TOM
HEFFELFINGER DISMISSAL: In Minnesota, US Attorney Tom Heffelfinger lost his
position when he ran afoul of GOP activists for “expressing deep concern about
the effect of a state directive that could have the effect of discouraging
Indians in Minnesota from casting ballots.”
““I am not willing to defend them anymore,” Wisconsin state Sen. Dale Schultz, R-Richland Center, explained when Salvia asked why Republicans sought to limit the number of voting hours a municipality could offer. “I’m just not and I’m embarrassed by this.”

Explain the new voter ID laws in only republican controlled states. Explain why they are attempting to cut early voting in those same states. Explain why Sunday voting is being attacked in those states. Explain why voting machine are in large urban areas are being reduced but in rural less populated areas they are being added for fast easy voting in the same states. We all should take issue with this. It’s bigger than republican or democrats. This is about disenfranchised citizens. I am an independent and have voted both ways. I look at the candidate not the party. A wise man once said, if you have you mind made up before you even know who the candidate will be, then you are an idiot. With that said I have looked at all the candidates in my state (GA). Voting one way all the way down the line. Right now the Republican here have lost all my confidence. All they want is to fight any progress and seems they are not concerned with the greater good of the country. The last 5 years while obama has been in office things got better and congress can not take credit for any of it because their main mission was failure for this president at all cost.

I can verify little with accounts unverified through Disqus (the guest accounts) But honestly, those that moderate here take the responsibility seriously and would not edit another’s comment in such a way. We may scold you or tell you to take your opinion elsewhere, but we’re all older than 12 and don’t behave in such a manner.

and we do appreciate your efforts Carla to keep the forum free of spammers and outright trolls. and the rest of the mods as well..
even RJ…. :o)

Do you remember the Hello Kitty videos? Huh? HUH?

I’m sorry, but I have to say that you’re wrong. I did not write those end snippets. My posts weren’t deleted as I had expected, but turned into guest account posts, so I wish you’d been able to view them prior to that.

And you’re one of the prime reasons that people on the left and people on the right can’t communicate. I’m willing to listen to you, but you won’t listen to me. How sad.
Tammy Minton Haley November 7th, 2014 at 18:35
you have nothing worthwhile to contribute…i don’t tolerate idiocy…
coppercarla November 7th, 2014 at 19:01
Bless your little heart, you are a special one, aren’t you?
Thanks for proving my observation: if someone doesn’t agree with you completely, you don’t feel they have anything to contribute to the argument or to society in general. What a progressive, liberal viewpoint — it’s just brimming with acceptance, inclusion, and love of your fellow humans.
I’ll pray for you. :-) Really, I will. So that you can open your mind and your heart to the viewpoints of others around you and at least be considering instead of so closeminded.
granpa.usthai November 4th, 2014 at 16:43
had the same feelings before, and weird notices like not self=at top, or some such stuff. Life does seem to get weird when traversing the fine line of a drunken stupor coma (hell, just look at the Alaskan Tundra criminal and her violent outburst) but if we keep looking at the brighter side of life, we’ll understand that full employment in a Chinese rice field does in fact make us co-helpers of Mitt’s offshore bank accounts – thus revealing the untruthfulness of the GOP propaganda of ‘self sufficient’! (just like the 2012 mudslide).
coppercarla November 6th, 2014 at 13:22
A friend posted the article, I came here and replied. When I noticed my comments being altered, I tried to delete them, but they reverted to “guest” status at that point. But don’t worry, this is the first and last article I’ll be visiting on this site. The out-and-out vitriol towards me (Tammy calling me a liar, bless her heart) doesn’t make me want to engage any further with the residents here. Free speech is great… as long as everyone agrees with you, seems to be the mantra. I’m glad that’s not my viewpoint in life.
I just figured you’d want to know that SOMEONE is doing something to unwanted visitor posts. FWIW, I now screencap and save images of all posts here. Although I sincerely doubt, based on my treatment, that anyone here really cares and that they’re all happy that the conservative freak got her comeuppance and you all put me in my place and told me to eff off and I’m running scared with my tail between my legs. Be proud, all of you. And realize that how you treat me is part of the whole problem with political discourse in this country.
Carla Akins November 6th, 2014 at 14:07
I’m sorry that you feel mistreated here or had a bad experience. It’s not so much that I don’t care but that there is no way to track in arrears what occurred. We have more conservative and libertarian readers that regularly comment and a conservative moderator that all engage civil and reasonable debate. It has been my experience that if you hold an opposing opinion, you may want to frame your post in a less adversarial position.

“I’m just not and I’m embarrassed by this.”

the world does not revolve around what you personally “have yet to hear of”. I suggest you find better sources of information.

There’s your proof.

Um, YOU made an assertion, and I asked you to back it up:
“I guess in your world it’s OK when they change the votes to Democrat, such as has happened in Illinois and Maryland so far?”
So I guess you’re just blowin’ smoke.
Mike November 3rd, 2014 at 11:31
Explain the new voter ID laws in only republican controlled states. The last 5 years while obama has been in office things got better and congress can not take credit for any of it because their main mission was failure for this president at all cost.

you’re floundering there fool.
Mike November 3rd, 2014 at 11:14
Republicans do better with less turn out
Democrats do better when the more voters show up.
Not hard to understand who’s suppressing the vote.
arc99 November 2nd, 2014 at 17:59
why is it that these “both sides do it” fairy tales trying to imply there is no difference between left and right, Democrat vs Republican never include facts to back up their opinions?
tell this woman that dawg don’t hunt, you mouth-breathing sycophant.

Of course there is voter suppression.
But more reason to vote counting out of the hands of private companies and go to paper.
Even if it takes a week to count the votes.
