Florida Man Shoots Ex-Girlfriend After Mistaking Her For An Intruder
A Florida man says he accidentally shot his ex-girlfriend after she broke into his house to collect her things following a break-up.
According to the Daily News, T.J. Schaus, a U.S. military Veteran, said he mistook his ex, who had recently moved out of his Mount Dora home, for a burglar when he opened fire on Thursday.
“If I knew it was her I would have never grabbed the pistol,” he said.
The couple dated for about two a half years before they broke up and she moved out.
Before the unidentified woman returned on Thursday to pick up her things, she texted Schaus to tell him she would be there soon. But, he said he was sleeping and never got the message.
When she tried to open the locked door at around 12:30 p.m. he was still napping, he said.
She then began to beat down the door in order to get inside, he said.
When she went into his bedroom, Schaus woke up.
“I rolled out of bed, grabbed my pistol that was on my night stand, said, ‘Who the f— is in my house?'” he said.. “Didn’t get a reply so I shot her.”
When she screamed after being shot, he said he realized who it was.
He said he immediately rushed to her side to help.
“She was like, ‘I’m going to die. I’m going to die.’ I’m like, ‘You’re not going to die. Lay down, be still and breathe,'” Schaus said.
The woman was airlifted to a local hospital and underwent surgery. On Friday morning, she was listed in stable condition and spoke to authorities, Lake County Sgt. Jim Vachon said.
“I’m upset it happened. I never in 10 million years thought I’d have to shoot somebody else,” Schaus said.

Cop 101, identifying your target, or the night I almost shot
Dale Earnhardt.
Back in the day I responded as backup for an alarm at a racquetball club. As almost all business alarms are false, we were complacent and committed two cardinal sins.
1. Allowing my partner to get away from my sight (search downstairs while I searched upstairs). We did this in order to expedite a building search that was likely a false alarm. 2.walked upstairs without stopping eye level with the landing to check out the area from concealment.
I suddenly noticed the figure standing next to the bar. I pointed my weapon and commanded (loudly), “FREEZE”. My
partner practically flew up the stairs and illuminated the area. We both noticed at the same time, that the suspect was a life-size cardboard cutout of Dale Earnhardt endorsing his favorite beer, and the mobile above the bar that was moving due to the proximity of a ventilation outlet, hence setting off the motion alarm. My partner said “I think he’s just about as frozen as he’s evergoing to get”
I secured my weaponand advised my partner that I would shoot him if he ever told anyone.
Anomaly 100 November 1st, 2014 at 12:11

Statistically you have a much greater chance for hurting yourself or some unintended victim with your gun than any invader. You’re doing what the right does so well, take a low incident issue and blow it up to stir up fear. We see it with the right’s Ebola fear-mongering, with the excuse of virtually non-existent voting fraud to justify voter suppression. Your excuse for having a gun for defense of some intrusion is not supported by reality.

So, again a responsible gun owner opened fire when he clearly had no idea what/who he was shooting at. You don’t get to shoot all willy-nilly when you can’t know you’re in danger.
Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 1st, 2014 at 10:43
Lets play devils advocate for a moment. “Somebody” is banging down your door. Enters your residence. You call out “Who Is It” and there is no reply.
You have no idea if it is one, two, four people ?? You do not know what intentions that person or persons may have. Do you expose yourself to a possible threat and put yourself in harms way?? Do you sit and hide in your room, in anticipation of what may come through your door??
Anytime you enter someones home with no invitation, you have to expect you are taking your life into your own hands. thankfully, she will live. But there are many stories where this story does not end so well for either party.
Shades November 1st, 2014 at 10:56
Right back atcha Susie. What if, after texting, she went to the house, knocked (not beat) on the door at 12:30 pm then let herself in. After all, she managed to get INTO the house before he woke up so how would he know someone was “banging the door down?” Methinks the guy is lying to cover his ass.
Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 1st, 2014 at 12:00
Should never have entered into the home if there was no answer at the door. It was no longer her place of residence.
William November 1st, 2014 at 12:09
“It was no longer her place of residence”.
Considering the length of time that she resided there, and the fact that her property was contained therein, there isn’t a DA in the land that would even begin to suggest a burglary was in process.
Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 1st, 2014 at 12:26
Kicked in Front Door ??? Broken Door jam, Foot prints on the Front door ???
flame821 November 1st, 2014 at 13:28
Yes, so let’s all agree she beat/kicked down the door. How did that NOT wake him up, but the sound of someone simply opening the bedroom door did. And while we’re at it, let us ponder on how, in the afternoon sun, he could see well enough to aim, but not well enough to ID the woman he’s lived with for more than 2 years.
Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 1st, 2014 at 13:43
You keep making assumptions about there being enough light to ID a person.
Red Mann November 1st, 2014 at 13:47

StoneyCurtisll November 1st, 2014 at 14:38

You have your firearm..

You seem to be chomping at the bit for the chance..
Shades November 1st, 2014 at 12:17
Give it up Susie. The guy woke up at 12:30 pm and started shooting. Now he’s tap dancing like Fred Astaire to keep from being arrested. You don’t know whose place of residence it was, whose name is on the lease, etc. You’re just desperately trying to justify an trigger happy buffoon shooting another human being … and failing. What next, when a kid gets run over by a drunk are you going to blame the kid for getting too close to the street? Maybe that rape victim’s skirt was too short.

Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 1st, 2014 at 13:22

Can you show the success rate of stopping deadly intruders?

Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 1st, 2014 at 13:29

But again, lets look at this specific scenario. The person was already inside of their bedroom.. Now what ?
flame821 November 1st, 2014 at 13:34
Middle of the afternoon, I’d expect him to be able to ID the person he lived with for 2 years before he shot her. I mean he could see well enough to aim so we can extrapolate that he could see well enough to ID a female figure and his ex-girlfriend.
Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 1st, 2014 at 13:43

Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 1st, 2014 at 11:55
No, I dont Hunt. And besides, Hunting is a completely different circumstance then somebody breaking into your home.
And Yes, you should have an idea of what you are shooting at as long as the situation allows yourself to do so safely.
William November 1st, 2014 at 11:59
“you should have an idea of what you are shooting at as long as the situation allows yourself to do so safely”
an idea?
AN IDEA?.
Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 1st, 2014 at 12:17
yes, an IDEA…. Now that is a very broad comment to be taken into context of this specific scenario. the Idea that someone has broken into your home, has failed to answer to your call, and is now breaking into your bedroom.
William November 1st, 2014 at 12:33
There is absolutely no substitute for positively identifying your target. Hunting aside, if you don’t positively identify somebody or something as an immediate threat of serious injury or death there is no justification to use deadly force. You can argue that until the cows come home, but simply put, this Bozo by his own admission didn’t know who he was shooting at.
That said, I think his story is absolute bullsh*t. He didn’t hear someone pounding at the door, but heard her enter the room?
He lived with her for more than 2 years and could see clearly see enough to aim/point but not identify the profile of someone he lived with? He was able to take the time to retrieve a weapon but not identify his target?
He’s either a liar, an idiot, or both.
M D Reese November 1st, 2014 at 13:14
This shooting is the epitome of domestic shootings–idiots with loaded guns shooting family or friends. I’m beginning to think that the NRA is for zero population growth.

Except it’s apples and bowling balls.
you completely disregard the very fact that the victim in this shooting wasn’t a violent criminal.
You can post as many “granny kilt the bad guy” stories as you want but it still doesn’t change the fact that a person who wasn’t endangering anyone was shot.
How about if police officers shoot each an every single person who MIGHT be committing a burglary before establishing who they are first.

PP is just another NRA troll.
Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 1st, 2014 at 13:19
the point I am making, so that we are clear.
Someone has entered your home illegally. They were not invited in by you. Your anology of police officer versus homeowner is the same as you said Apples and bowling Balls. An officer is entering into a situation of heightened awareness and already has some form of situational awareness.
A homeowner will most likely not have that opportunity. As in this particular case, if he is to be believed. he woke up to find a person in his bedroom, shouted out with no reply. As stated, his pistol was already on his nightstand, so it was not a matter of having to retrieve his weapon. soooo
Option A. Shout out again, hope for a response.
Option B. Hope they dont shoot first?
Option C. Run out of house screaming like a lunatic
Option D. Defend yourself
flame821 November 1st, 2014 at 13:21
Option E. You have the better position, you are armed and you can take 3 seconds to ID who the ‘intruder’ is since it’s the middle of the afternoon and you have ample light in which to see.
Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 1st, 2014 at 13:42
You are making assumptions that you do not know.
Red Mann November 1st, 2014 at 13:54
Shooting at someone you can’t see is an assumption too, Susie, and can be a fatal one. Reality is not on your side.
William November 1st, 2014 at 13:25
Defend yourself against what?
She wasn’t armed or threatening anyone.
He shot someone without establishing the threat. He shot an unarmed person without any regard whatsoever. In other words he’s a chickenshit who substitutes bullets for common sense and courage.
I am saddened that you somehow own a gun without the wisdom to know when to use it but on the other hand I am grateful you are not a cop.
Red Mann November 1st, 2014 at 13:34
It’s part of the RW/NRA mythos that there are thugs around every corner, plotting to break into your house. If you listen to them it happens hundreds of times a day in hundreds of cities, so you’ve got to have a big shiny gun so you can blow away the bad guys, and maybe caress it a little now and then.
William November 2nd, 2014 at 08:15
I think it’s part paranoia, and part fantasy IE “I kilt the bad guy”
Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 1st, 2014 at 13:41
There is someone in your HOME…. Uninvited …. In your bedroom ???
OK ???? Now What ???
William November 2nd, 2014 at 08:14
You’re in a room as small as a bedroom. You can see the person you lived with well enough to shoot at, but not well enough to identify her as the person you slept with for two years.
Seriously?
I’m absolutely out of any effort to convey logic to you.
flame821 November 1st, 2014 at 13:20
How about she texted him, she ‘beat down his door’ and we’re supposed to believe none of that woke him up. BUT hearing his bedroom door open woke him out of a dead sleep allowing him to grab his pistol and shoot at someone before he was awake enough to ID them. Remember this happened in the middle of the afternoon, not the middle of the night. More than enough light to be able to see.
Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 1st, 2014 at 13:32
I am an extremely heavy sleeper. So, I dont always hear certain things.
As far as there being enough light?? One could possibly think that. Now a friend of mine works nights. His windows have very heavy drapes to keep the light out during the day when he is trying to sleep. Is the case here, I dont know. Do you?
Red Mann November 1st, 2014 at 13:30
Sorry Susie, Google research doesn’t support you. The only sources that show high incidences are by security companies trying to use fear to get you to buy their services. While the rare break in does occur and an even rarer successful response by the home owner has happened, the odds are still very much in favor of the residents or unintended victims being hurt by you beloved guns.
Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 1st, 2014 at 13:34

Red Mann November 1st, 2014 at 13:50
Well I’ve been in this house in a large city and have not even locked my door in over thirty years and no one within five miles of me has ever had a break in by someone with a gun.
Carla Akins November 1st, 2014 at 12:40
First rule of gun ownership is to know what you’re shooting at – clearly he didn’t. We don’t know if he really called out for her or if his story flies at all (pretty convenient). I wouldn’t have a gun, so this specific decision I won’t ever have to make. If you are going to jump up and start shooting every time something startles you, you shouldn’t have a gun.
Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 1st, 2014 at 13:38
“IF” the story goes as he said it does. Which apparently is probably collaborated by the ex-girlfriend or I imagine there would have been charges filed already.
He awoke to someone already in his bedroom. he Yelled out, and they did not respond to his verbal command. He rolled over, grabbed his pistol and fired at his target.
Sorry, but she was wrong in breaking and entering into his home to begin with. And once in, after she entered his room and saw him there, she should have made him aware that she was there by waking him up.
StoneyCurtisll November 1st, 2014 at 14:22
Under Florida common law statutes, his ‘ex-girlfriend’ was his Common Law wife..(cohabited for 2 1/2 years)..:)
Jo Clark November 1st, 2014 at 15:04
Again, I’m no fan of guns, but I totally agree in this case. Of course he knew what he was shooting at. He was shooting at the intruder that just busted down his front door and refused to answer him. She’s lucky he even gave her that chance and she’s even luckier she’s not dead.
fancypants November 2nd, 2014 at 03:53
a very compelling argument after he takes the PTSD test ?
Carla Akins November 1st, 2014 at 10:31
So, again a responsible gun owner opened fire when he clearly had no idea what/who he was shooting at.
Pistol-Packing November 1st, 2014 at 12:00
Should never have entered into the home if there was no answer at the door. It was no longer her place of residence.
William November 1st, 2014 at 12:09
“It was no longer her place of residence”.
Considering the length of time that she resided there, and the fact that her property was contained therein, there isn’t a DA in the land that would even begin to suggest a burglary was in process.
Pistol-Packing November 1st, 2014 at 12:26
Kicked in Front Door ??? Broken Door jam, Foot prints on the Front door ???
flame821 November 1st, 2014 at 13:28
Yes, so let’s all agree she beat/kicked down the door. How did that NOT wake him up, but the sound of someone simply opening the bedroom door did. And while we’re at it, let us ponder on how, in the afternoon sun, he could see well enough to aim, but not well enough to ID the woman he’s lived with for more than 2 years.
Pistol-Packing November 1st, 2014 at 13:43
You keep making assumptions about there being enough light to ID a person.
Red Mann November 1st, 2014 at 13:47
So, you’re going to blast away at shadows and hope for the best?
StoneyCurtisll November 1st, 2014 at 14:38
Correct me if I’m wrong…(wouldn’t be the first time, or the last)
You have your firearm..
And just waiting to use it for it’s intended purpose..(to shot someone)
You seem to be chomping at the bit for the chance..
Shades November 1st, 2014 at 12:17
Give it up Susie. We’ve caught the guy lying. He says she beat down the door, yet he didn’t wake up until she entered the bedroom. The guy woke up at 12:30 pm and started shooting. Now he’s tap dancing like Fred Astaire to keep from being arrested. You don’t know whose place of residence it was, whose name is on the lease, etc. You’re just desperately trying to justify an trigger happy buffoon shooting another human being. What next, when a kid gets run over by a drunk are you going to blame the kid for getting too close to the street? Maybe that rape victim’s skirt was too short. Sheesh, if you’re going to fire a weapon, you HAVE to know who/what you’re firing at or you shouldn’t be allowed to own one.
Pistol-Packing November 1st, 2014 at 12:23
Perhaps you should watch the video again..
And then lets have this conversation…
M D Reese November 1st, 2014 at 13:20
…And what if she actually had a key, and he’s lying ’cause he just wanted to shoot someone? Or what if she flew on an airplane? Did she get a window seat? Susie is not so much a devil’s advocate as a they are a trollee–only stopped by to take the thread down the rabbit hole.
Pistol-Packing November 1st, 2014 at 13:22
Well Reese…. If you watched the video, then you know she didn’t have a key and actually kicked in the door.
But as far as Airplane seats go, I prefer an Aisle seat. thank you
Red Mann November 1st, 2014 at 11:31
So Susie, what is the trade off point of dead non-intruders to dead actual intruders? How many kids need to die when sneaking in late or drunks that come to the wrong door before this becomes a problem to you?
Can you show the success rate of stopping deadly intruders?
rg9rts November 1st, 2014 at 11:34
Its a mind set….no win with this one…
M D Reese November 1st, 2014 at 13:17

No cell either I suppose….get real even a poor slob like me has both
Pistol-Packing November 1st, 2014 at 12:24
I dont keep a home phone, and I usually have my phone plugged in on the kitchen counter. Not all that uncommon these days.
flame821 November 1st, 2014 at 13:26
Ah, actually most people have their cell plugged in and charging next to their bed just in case they need it. Having it across the house IS unusual to the point that it is unbelievable if you don’t have a land line in your bedroom as a backup.
Pistol-Packing November 1st, 2014 at 13:29
If that is what you think. But as you said, Most…
But again, lets look at this specific scenario.
Pistol-Packing November 1st, 2014 at 13:43
Keep thinking….
Mike Butkus Jr. November 1st, 2014 at 11:45

M D Reese November 1st, 2014 at 13:14
Exactly.
William November 1st, 2014 at 11:46
So…..identifying your target isn’t part of your process?
Please tell me you don’t hunt.
Pistol-Packing November 1st, 2014 at 11:55
No, I dont Hunt. And besides, Hunting is a completely different circumstance then somebody breaking into your home.
And Yes, you should have an idea of what you are shooting at as long as the situation allows yourself to do so safely.
William November 1st, 2014 at 11:59
“you should have an idea of what you are shooting at as long as the situation allows yourself to do so safely”
an idea?
AN IDEA?.
Pistol-Packing November 1st, 2014 at 12:17
yes, an IDEA….

Pistol-Packing November 1st, 2014 at 12:16
Your right, lets play reality. Shall we start listing all the horrible stories of whose peoples homes have been broken into where they were killed, raped, beaten…
Come on, lets play a game. For every news story you post about an accidental shooting, I will post one of some violent criminal who broke into someones home.. Lets see how many we can come up with..
Here, I will start. Criminal breaks in and rapes 100 year old woman.
WPD make arrest in rape of 100-year-oldhttp://www.kwch.com/news/local-news/wpd-investigating-rape-of-100yearold-woman/28390652

How about if police officers shoot each an every single person who MIGHT be committing a burglary before establishing who they are first.
your turn.

PP is just another NRA troll.
Pistol-Packing November 1st, 2014 at 13:19
the point I am making, so that we are clear.
As stated, his pistol was already on his nightstand, so it was not a matter of having to retrieve his weapon. soooo
