Illinois Teacher Repeatedly Calls Students ‘N*gger’ and ‘Slave’ After They Object To ‘African-American’
A substitute teacher in a Chicago suburb will no longer be employed at Jay Stream Middle School in Carol Stream after repeatedly calling students the N word and referring to them as slaves while speaking to a group of 8th graders.
According to NBC Chicago, four 13-year-old students say they were in a social studies class working on a project about the Cold War last Wednesday when a substitute teacher approached them and called them “African American.”
“We were so shocked and we were like, ‘What? Excuse me?'” Thompson said. “She was like, ‘Well, back then that’s what African Americans were called.'”
Over the 80-minute class period, the students said she repeated the racial slur and also referred to them as slaves.
It go so bad that one student threw down her books and others began crying, according to the student.
“I just want people to know how much it affected us and I don’t want this to happen to anybody else,” student Zaria Daniel said.
The school district confirmed on Tuesday that the teacher had been interviewed and did corroborate the girls’ description of the incident.
A district spokesperson said the substitute teacher will not be asked back to the school, according to NBC.
Thompson’s mother, Shayna Thompson, said the punishment isn’t enough.
“After the shock and hurt, I’m angry,” she said. “It’s a new world, and the people of the past that still hang onto hatred and bigotry don’t belong in this world anymore.”
She said she is looking into whether the incident could be considered a hate crime.
Local Police said they are aware of the incident and are investigating the matter.

Seems to be quite a bit missing from this article. As a liberal I was always taught to ask questions when something seems fishy and this smells fishy.
What was the context of the discussion when she referred to them as African-Americans and why were these girls so offended that she did?
So I did a little research and quite a bit was left out of this post. To begin with the discussion was about the Emancipation Proclamation Since the discussion was about African Americans the teacher apparently made a mistake in thinking these girls were African Americans which is as they corrected the teacher on – factually incorrect since none alive today came from Africa. The ones during the slave days were and that’s why they were called that. The teacher was also correct that the ‘N word’ is what they were called back then. They were also called slaves. None of that is incorrect.
Part of this story is just plain stupidity. The teacher was most certainly wrong but in the context being taught was not entirely in the wrong. It also sounds as if the students also over reacted after apparently being referred to as the wrong race of darker skinned people. But the outlandish thing is someone trying to sue saying it is a hate crime.
It’s times like these that make me wonder if conservatives AND liberals are both screwed in the head. The right does this crap all the time but I am noticing liberals doing the same thing more and more. Just minutes ago on another liberal page I saw people arguing in favor of religious discussions in schools…except it was Islam they were supporting…and as long as I’ve been a liberal I have always read that religion has no place in education unless it’s a religious school.
Seriously, stop acting like right wingers.

“The ones during the slave days were [come from Africa] and that’s why they were called
that.”
Sorry, but there’s ZERO evidence that Black slaves in the days of slavery were called “African-Americans”. I challenge you to find the term anywhere in contemporary literature. Besides, the Atlantic slave trade was abolished in 1833, so by the time of the abolition of slavery in the United States almost ALL slaves were American-born.
“The teacher was also correct that the ‘N word’ is what they were
called back then. They were also called slaves. None of that is
incorrect.”
So that’s a reason to use these words in 2014 in reference to young Black kids? Do you think the teacher was trying to provide a history lesson, rather than just hurl racial slurs? What’s the matter with you?

Emancipation Proclamation?
That wasn’t during the Cold War….
Since those kids were not around during the Emancipation Proclamation days, they were not called that then. Remember, the kids were referring to how THEY were being referred to, not people long ago. The teacher was calling THEM that, in 2014, when they objected to being referred to as African American.

I read this earlier on TRS. This gave me a serious bout of the sads. For two human beings to be treated and demeaned in such a way by a bigot who has already determined they are not deserving of any of their own identity, let alone respect, was seriously disheartening. :'( :'( :'(

I did and it wasn’t wasn’t. This is 2014 and the context the teacher could have conveyed was lost with the racial overtones. Efficacy is a thing. Even then, these are two girls who belong to a minority group that still experiences marginalization.
Pistol-Packing October 29th, 2014 at 20:55
Actually, I did find it enlightening and that there is probably more to this story then meets the keyboard…

hardly. Why do I know this? It’s because I’ve been upset at plenty of people and never have I used racial epithets against them and especially not when they are openly hurt and crying about it. It’s pretty much basic manners.

There are some real morons out there substitute teaching. The bar is perhaps lower for them than for full time staff. My son was in second grade many years ago when a sub teaching his class tried to lead the kids in prayer to ‘Lord Jesus’. This was just after 9-11 and she scared them to death telling them that Jesus was coming very soon. There was so much flak from parents that the school had to send letters to the parents- it also made the news. She was immediately stripped of her certification. You have to wonder about the personality type who would do something like the teacher in this story..

This girls are stupid… Their nationality is Jamaican, But… Their race is black/African.
I have this friend that says she is not black, That she is Puerto-Rican. But I always have to teach her that she is black. Her nationality is Puerto-Rican but, her race is black. LOL.
American is not a race is a nationality. Latin/Hispanic is not a race, is a nationality. Latin can be White, Black or Indian. Period.

Really? You have to ‘teach your friend’ that she’s black? Why? Why does it matter to you how she self-identifies? Doesn’t sound like a very friendly thing for you to do. And regardless of her skin color, if she’s from Puerto Rico, she’s perfectly correct in saying she’s Puerto Rican.

I am so glad and eternally grateful that you, in your infinite wisdom, educated me on what I and my other gene kin are. It’s of paramount importance that you define who and what we are at all times. I thought we were bereft forever without your sage counsel. Please, PLEASE tell me you have children…I’d feel safer and sleep better, knowing that this level of intellect is going to be carried on in the future.
Julia Mercado October 30th, 2014 at 12:38
If you had started with “the girls are unaware as of yet, since they are in school, the heritage of their present nationality is Jamaican” Or “although educated, the girls are ignorant yet of the fact that the heritage of their present nationality is Jamaican …” – you just might have squeeked by saved your valid point from being an utterly crass statement.
