Chris Christie Gets Beat Bad By Obama And An Ebola-Free Nurse

An Ebola drama that began to play out on Friday when nurse Kaci Hickox was quarantined/imprisoned in New Jersey ended Monday with Governor Chris Christie (R-N.J.) letting her go under pressure from the White House, and Hickox’s lawyer.

Over the weekend, Hickox became a national news story when the circumstances of her detention became widely publicized. On the heels of the New York Ebola case, Governors Christie and Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) announced new quarantine policies, and in that atmosphere, Hickox was detained at Newark Liberty International Airport on Friday because she was returning from Sierra Leone, where she had been treating Ebola patients. According to Hickox, she was completely asymptomatic when she got to the airport:

“I was tired, hungry and confused, but I tried to remain calm. My temperature was taken using a forehead scanner and it read a temperature of 98. I was feeling physically healthy but emotionally exhausted.

“…Four hours after I landed at the airport, an official approached me with a forehead scanner. My cheeks were flushed, I was upset at being held with no explanation. The scanner recorded my temperature as 101.”

She was taken to the hospital, where her temperature was recorded as normal, and where an Ebola test came back negative, but where she was also told she’d be quarantined in a tent for 21 days. She was not happy, and neither was the White House, which put out an official leak saying the policy was “not grounded in science,” and President Obama obliquely addressed these policies at his big Ebola meeting on Sunday, according to the White House readout of the meeting (via email):

“The President’s advisors updated him on policy considerations for new measures pertaining to returning healthcare workers, whose selfless efforts are critical to fighting this epidemic in West Africa. The President underscored that the steps we take must be guided by the best medical science, as informed by our most knowledgeable public health experts. He also emphasized that these measures must recognize that healthcare workers are an indispensable element of our effort to lead the international community to contain and ultimately end this outbreak at its source, and should be crafted so as not to unnecessarily discourage those workers from serving. He directed his team to formulate policies based on these principles in order to offer the highest level of protection to the American people.”

Hickox, meanwhile, hired a lawyer to get her out of Ebola jail, and Chris Christie decided on Monday to let her go. He told a reporter, though, that it had nothing to do with getting slapped around by the nurse, her lawyer, or her president, and also delivered a great new tourism slogan for his fair state…READ MORE

If christie can’t keep one nurse in quarantine for 21 days how can we trust him to keep the prisoners locked up in Gitmo or to secure our borders?

    • granpa.usthai October 29th, 2014 at 00:37

well, he could always close a bridge.

just imagine what the US would be like with a 2 year Palin/Christie presidency!

Mega million dollar bridges everywhere going to nowhere – and all shut down!

Believe it or not the Military go by the UCMJ and putting them in quarantine will not subject them to the same hardship the nurse would be under.
Maybe you forgot but the Military plays by a different set of rules, they can be ordered into battle where your butt can’t.

What’s also distrubing is the US Army has been “investigating” Ebola for several decades and probably knows more about it than even the public health establishment.

As you say, a soldier’s life, even in a peacetime army, is not like that of civilians. It’s hard to know what a “controlled monitoring period” entails, exactly, but it may not be a lot different than what a soldier does when he’s just stationed at any of our other bases around the world.

Sounds like a lot of hands of poker will be involved, but I don’t see zippered tents, isolation wards, or hazmat gear, just a lot of soldiers confined to base for three weeks before returning to the US.

And no shagging the locals, boys.

Are we talking about the same PRESIDENT Obama? The same PRESIDENT Obama who stated he was personally approving bombing targets in Iraq and Syria? Does the Pentagon set policy without his approval or do they take their orders from him? Or is there a PRESIDENT Obama who isn’t really the Commander In Chief of the Military. Maybe that was a different PRESIDENT Obama who defended the military quarantine policy today in a press conference

        • arc99 October 29th, 2014 at 19:14

the abc news article you cited specifically cited the Army Chief of Staff as the person who issued the order. the article also pointed out that the order applies only to the US Army.

maybe the next time before you launch into another nonsensical rant, you will actually read the source you provided.

defending an order and issuing an order are two different things.

the article that you cite says

“”The Army chief of staff, Gen. Ray Odierno, directed a 21-day controlled monitoring period for all redeploying soldiers returning from the Ebola fight in West Africa, said Maj. Charlene LaMountain, an Army spokeswoman.””

so you go right ahead and continue to make up BS out of thin air. nonsensical fiction is all you Obama-haters have as arguments anyway.

          • Red Eye Robot October 30th, 2014 at 04:46

Are you seriously suggesting a military officer can change military policy without the COMMANDER IN CHIEF’S permission? So General Odierno could if he wanted REVERSE the obama admin policy on gays serving in the military and THE PRESIDENT has no say?

            • ChrisVosburg October 30th, 2014 at 06:23

No, he’s not suggesting that, and your simpleton’s view of the chain of command, and virtually anything else you comment upon, and your childish capitalization of President and Commander in Chief, are tiresome and annoying.

Either be quiet and listen carefully and try to learn something, or just go outside and play or something until the grownups are through talking, please.

I guess you can identify the words when you read but you can’t comprehend the message in reading text, RER. Italy quarantined them. They are stationed in Vicenza, Italy but were deployed to Liberia to help set up medical facilities.

        Italy quarantined them.

That’s not the case, although the CNN article is somewhat confusing. Further down in the story:

…[a] decision that was made by one commanding officer in the Department of Defense — Josh Earnest, WH press sec.

The troops are under US jurisdiction while on base in Italy. I don’t know what the law is there as far as people coming from Ebola affected areas in Africa.

Aside form the easy – how can you miss – Christie target, this post raises some serious issues we’ll be facing when, if, we deploy large numbers of US troops to Ebola “hot zones.” It is not at all reassuring to learn even the military brass are at odds over how to deal with this.
