Wallace To Christie: ‘Should You Be So Cavalier’ About Minimum Wage?

Posted by | October 26, 2014 13:13 | Filed under: Economy News Behaving Badly Politics Top Stories

In response to Chris Christie saying he’s tired of hearing about the minimum wage, Chris Wallace asked him if the issue warranted him to be so cavalier.

“Not being cavalier at all,” Christie replied. “I’m saying it exactly as I see it. What we need to do in this country is not have debate over a higher minimum wage. We have to have a debate over creating better-paying middle class jobs in the country. If that somehow doesn’t comport with what people in the political elite want, well, I’m sorry…

“There’s just not income inequality in this country,” Christie said. “The bigger problem is opportunity inequality. And that’s what mothers and fathers are sitting around kitchen tables talking about wanting for their children’s future. And that’s exactly what I was saying at the Chamber of Commerce. And I don’t back off from those comments one inch.”

Chris Christie just doesn’t understand that more money flowing in the economy makes the economy better. Pay the people that make the least more and the money flows through the economy faster making the economy stronger. It would also mean that the overpaid CEOs would be taking less out of the economy and stashing it away in bank accounts.

    • William October 26th, 2014 at 14:12

He doesn’t seem to understand that a consumer based economy doesn’t work if there is no disposable income to purchase things. Even when there is a few extra dollars…..well, we know where that goes don’t we?

Christie’s NJ was 47th worst in jobs creation via BLS March. His economic illiteracy proves why today’s remaining repubs plummeted to 23.9%. Seattle’s $15/hr minimum wages ‘trickle-up’ that has jump started many better-paying middle class jobs.

Christie’s NJ ’47th worst in jobs creation’ via BLS March, is now erasing jobs. His economic illiteracy proves why today’s remaining repubs plummeted to 23.9%. Seattle’s $15/hr minimum wages ‘trickle-up’, having jump started many better-paying middle class jobs increasing business profits by consumers 70%+ share of disposable income.

More of the same “trickle down” BS we have been hearing from the GOP for years.

A minimum wage increase has an immediate, tangible effect on the purchasing power of millions of Americans.

The solutions from Christie and the GOP always involve providing some new benefit for corporations without any requirement that a single job will be created by that benefit.

Here you go big corporation, another tax cut coming your way. Now you can earn even bigger profits when you ship jobs to China and India.

    • William October 26th, 2014 at 14:07

Yeah, that “trickle down” that started with Reagan should be kicking in any day now.

    • Obewon October 26th, 2014 at 14:13

Even Christie’s own Pope says: Trickle-Down Economics ‘Has Never Been Confirmed By The Facts’-Pope Francis! http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2013/11/26/2997451/pope-francis-trickle/

I wonder if they will ever figure out that “workers” are also “consumers”, and that maybe if they had more money in their pockets they might BUY something once in awhile…

That is common sense to us, but not these types. He is todays version of Marie Antoinette, “let them eat cake”.

Except in Antoinette’s case, she was talking about a cheap bread type product that the poorest people ate to just barely survive.

            • M D Reese October 27th, 2014 at 12:51

Actually, the deeper you research that whole topic, the less you know–including if she ever even said it.

Bull puckey!. When I started out in the workforce in the late 60s, minimum wage was $1.65 an hour and you could almost live on that if you worked full time. CEOs back then were making about 30 times what the average worker made. Now the minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, it’s almost impossible to find full time work, it’s not possible to live on it even if you were working full time, and CEOs are making 300-400 times what the average worker makes. Yeah Christie–it’s just an “opportunity” problem, not that all of our middle-class jobs have been sent to communist China and the only jobs available here are based on the Micky D-WallyWorld model.
