Nancy Reagan’s Astrologer Dies

Joan Quigley, the astrologer who helped Nancy Reagan plan her husband’s schedule, has died at her San Francisco home at the age of 87.

Donald T. Regan, Reagan’s former Chief of Staff, claimed in his memoir that Mrs. Reagan kept Quigley on a $3,000 per month retainer. He said Quigley consulted with Mrs. Reagan up to three times per day on a private line to the White House.

Quigley told The Associated Press in 1988 that she was a “serious, scientific astrologer.”

3k a month according to my lousy math could qualify as well below minimum wage even if joan only worked part time.

A retainer only guarantees that a service will be performed and does not cover hourly fees. Mrs. Quigley probably charged Mrs. Reagan an hourly fee in addition to the retainer.

$3,000 per month, divided by 31, works out to $98 per day, just for the retainer – about $12 per hour, 8 hours a day, for 31 days per month. And that’s just the retainer. Add in Mrs. Quigley’s hourly rate and . . . . not bad work if you can get it.

But then, this is “scientific astrology,” popular in Republican circles. The funniest thing about astrology is that the planetary movements its based upon are completely wrong. Astrologers use the term “retrograde” to refer to a planet apparently stopping and then reversing direction, which is absurd since planets do no such thing. And it’s based on the notion that events in your life are influenced by the apparent movement of objects in space. The whole thing is too goofy for words. And yet, an astrologer was playing a major part running the United States during one of the most dangerous times in relations between the US and USSR.

No telling either way if indeed joan was paid 3k a month (being facetious about min wage) I don’t see any republican shelling out that kind of loot for a non-sense created job However I do agree her efforts probably went unnoticed by the Reagans.

That was a fairly good wage in the 80’s.

Reminds me of the time I was reading one of those free newsstand papers and ran across a box saying that So-and-So’s Psychic Column was unavailable due to unforeseen circumstances. If only they woulda had a psychic…
