Man ‘Accidentally’ Shoots 9-Month-Old Son In The Head

Posted by | October 23, 2014 17:45 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Top Stories

You know how you’re cleaning your gun, then accidentally shoot your 9-month-old baby son in the head? Me neither, but that’s what happened on Wednesday evening to a Kokomo, Indiana man baby.

Police are investigating the incident, according to ABC 21.

At  around 5:00 p.m., 31-year-old John Hambaugh III was getting ready to clean his handgun in his kitchen.

Authorities say a round was accidentally left in the gun and discharged when Hambaugh was beginning to clean it. The round went through Hambaugh’s thigh, then struck his son’s head.

When police arrived, they found the homeowner and his 9-month-old son were both suffering from a single gunshot wound.

Police believe the child was standing next to Hambaugh at the time of the incident, according to The Indy Channel.

“It was pretty scary. The whole neighborhood ran out here and tried to help. It wasn’t much we could do. A little bit later the dad came out. He had shot himself in the leg also. The bullet went thorough his leg and into the kid’s head,” neighbor Tone Burton said.

Hambaugh and his son were taken to a local hospital then the child was airlifted to Riley Hospital for Children and remains in critical condition.

Howard County Sheriff Steven Rogers said, “You have to first ascertain that the weapon is not loaded. I can’t drive that point enough. If you take a class in responsible firearm handling, that is the first thing they tell you. You have to check and double check to make sure that the weapon is not loaded.”

And then there’s that thing about not pointing a gun, loaded or otherwise, at anything unless your intentions are to obliterate it.

Hambaugh was treated and released from the hospital.

The case remains under investigation.

Oh, f’! Is there no way to tell these ‘f’ing idiots to keep their ‘f’ing guns away from their kids? How is this not negligence? How does this ‘f’ing fool get to keep his guns after this?

(RJ edit: Ya left an ‘f’ and it went ta Pending.)

You and Mark are such perfectionists!

I want no part of any law which would establish a legal precedent that the state can demand you demonstrate competence in order to exercise a Constitutional right. Competency tests in order to purchase a firearm would in my opinion be just as unconstitutional as literacy tests to vote. I do believe that for better or worse, the 2nd amendment protects and individual right to own a firearm.

But having said that, we cannot ignore the reality that the more guns in society, the more prone we are to accidents like this. Conservatives have been busy over the past few years passing laws requiring a woman to have an ultrasoound before she can have an abortion. So in the same vein, why not require everyone who purchases a firearm to view a short video which contains police crime scene photos of people who were “accidentally” killed or injured by a gun.

After all, it is just a way to insure that the person makes an informed decision. That’s what the ultrasound law supporters told us. So let’s keep informing people.

    Accidentally?!

You might accidentally break a glass or a plate, burn the food, and etc., but accidentally shooting someone, that right remains only for Dick Cheney.

What kind of idiot cleans his gun in the kitchen next to his child?

These people do not even deserve their Second Amendment right.

Why is it a right to own a gun and only a privilege to drive a car? If the US army is coming after me, I’m not gonna stand there with a six shooter – I want to get in my car and run away as fast as possible!!!

      • tiredoftea October 23rd, 2014 at 18:54

Well, ’cause cars aren’t mentioned in the Bill of Rights?

        • veggiedude October 23rd, 2014 at 18:55

In other words, its not technologically up to date?

      • forpeace October 23rd, 2014 at 19:49

Some people even love their guns more than they do love their own children.

        • whatthe46 October 23rd, 2014 at 21:17

much like the woman who publically stated she loves her dog more than her son.

      • Jack E Raynbeau October 23rd, 2014 at 21:10

It’s not the right to own a gun. It’s the right to bear arms. Where’s my rocket launcher?

        • Candide Thirtythree October 24th, 2014 at 00:22

You have a right to bear it but not a right to use it

      • John_St_John October 24th, 2014 at 11:33

You will not outrun the drones and their Hellfire Missiles. You will only die tired and out of gas.

        • veggiedude October 24th, 2014 at 11:57

I’d only have to drive a few miles to find a good place to hide, and its better odds than standing your ground with a rifle vs drones. Run and hide!!!

I just approved it. Disqus will post it, whenev’s.

      • forpeace October 23rd, 2014 at 18:18

Thank you, do you think it disappeared because I used D!ck Cheney’s name in my comment?

        • tiredoftea October 23rd, 2014 at 18:19

Don’t know. The ways of Disqus are mysterious.

          • forpeace October 23rd, 2014 at 18:21

As far as I know, Disqus doesn’t do moderation on the sites that use Disqus commenting format.

            • mea_mark October 23rd, 2014 at 19:12

Language filters catch words and send comments to pending, it is programmed in for the sites that don’t have moderators.

              • forpeace October 23rd, 2014 at 19:43

Yes, you are correct, mm, I believe each site’s filter is set to catch certain words. I know on Raw Story you are not allowed to post “laptop.”

                • Candide Thirtythree October 24th, 2014 at 00:21

            • Jack E Raynbeau October 23rd, 2014 at 19:30

You are correct. Moderation is done on the site level.

              • forpeace October 23rd, 2014 at 19:41

Yes, that is true, each site is in charge of moderation.

We have filters in place and apparently ‘Dick” is one of the words in the filter.

        • Anomaly 100 October 23rd, 2014 at 18:51

This is a hot topic for me because at the Salt Lake Tribune long time respected posters are being over moderated and banned. Seems like the moderation at a once great forum is now being done by the Mormon church.

                  • forpeace October 23rd, 2014 at 19:51

Moderation on that site is being done by Mormon church?

Oh wow! That is very interesting to know, most probably that site will turn into a mormon colony!

                    • Jack E Raynbeau October 23rd, 2014 at 19:55

Not the church directly but by Mormons it seems. They are quite sensitive since the dispute between the Trib and the church paper, the Deseret News. (the snooze)

The Trib and the News entered a joint operating agreement in 2006, so even though they are separate companies, they are close enough that the church handling the monderation of the Trib’s comments is not surprising.

                    • Jack E Raynbeau October 24th, 2014 at 11:20

It appears that the JOA was designed to cripple the Trib to the point that there is no dissenting news in Zion.

I heard the faux news bimbos talking about how you should first pass a civics test before you are able to vote (as if any of them can pass ANY test), can you imagine what their heads would do if someone suggested a test on simple common sense be given before a gun permit is given?

Pregnancy Test??? No No IQ……No no drivers….no no eye …no no….

Their latest is telling women to just keep the tinder because it’s way too confusing to vote!

And of course no charges will be filed, because being completely f***ing stupid is not against the law. And this kind of shit will happen over and over again, as people who don’t have the brains of a potato insist on cleaning loaded guns.

“being completely f***ing stupid is not against the law”

Yep. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen adults operating riding mowers with toddlers sitting on their laps. I used to know a high school Science teacher who did this and defended the practice.

        • Margie Bateman Osgood October 24th, 2014 at 13:11

I love my dog more than my husband…………….sometimes

    • Jack E Raynbeau October 23rd, 2014 at 21:10

It’s not the right to own a gun. It’s the right to bear arms. Where’s my rocket launcher?

      • Candide Thirtythree October 24th, 2014 at 00:22

You have a right to bear it but not a right to use it

You will not outrun the drones and their Hellfire Missiles. You will only die tired and out of gas.

      • veggiedude October 24th, 2014 at 11:57

I’d only have to drive a few miles to find a good place to hide, and its better odds than standing your ground with a rifle vs drones. Run and hide!!!
