Rudy Fail! Protest Against ‘Klinghoffer’ Opera Backfire

We saw this coming from a mile away! So Rudy Giuliani and a cohort of his pals decide to picket New York’s Metropolitan Opera for staging John Adams’ opera “The Death of Klinghoffer”, claiming (wrongly) that the opera is anti-Semitic (in fact, the only sympathetic characters are Klinghoffer and his wife). The protests appeared to completely backfire, according to Norman Lebrecht’s dishy classical music blog Slipped Disc, where one of his New York colleagues writes:

The extraordinarily vocal demonstrators guaranteed that the Metropolitan premiere of “The Death of Klinghoffer” would be a success. Most in attendance were so appalled by the uneducated and irrational brouhaha, they were revved to show their support for the Met, the composer and the performers. Conductor David Robertson never received the kind of frenzied ovation he got just for coming out.

And that’s the way it was all evening: a politicized occasion that backfired for the supposed righteous. And at the end, the person receiving the most applause was John Adams.

    If you’re going to protest an opera, you buy tickets and wait until the Intermission is over — then break out in song.

      “By the time opera ended, with a roar of cheers when Mr. Adams took the stage, there had been two major disruptions: Before the intermission, a man shouted “The murder of Klinghoffer will never be forgiven” several times before being escorted out, and during the second half, just after the character of Leon Klinghoffer was murdered, a woman cried out a vulgarity and left, accompanied by ushers.”

    If you’re going to protest an opera, you buy tickets and wait until the Intermission is over — then break out in song.
