Texas GOP Governor Candidate: Gay Marriage Will Discourage Straight Couples From Having Babies

Attorney General Greg Abbott, Wendy Davis’ opponent,  says the same-sex marriage ban in Texas should remain intact because legalizing it would do little or nothing to encourage heterosexual couples to get married and have children.

Abbott wrote in a brief filed to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday that the state was not obligated to prove why gay marriage might be detrimental to the economic or social well-being of Texans. He stated it was only required to show how ‘opposite-sex’ marriage would be more beneficial for its citizens, the Houston Chronicle reports.

“The State is not required to show that recognizing same-sex marriage will undermine heterosexual marriage,” the brief read. “It is enough if one could rationally speculate that opposite-sex marriages will advance some state interest to a greater extent than same-sex marriages will.”

The new filing largely reiterated the same “responsible procreation” argument Abbott made in July, when the state first appealed a a February district court’s ruling overturning the Texas gay marriage ban. In it, Abbott argued marriage among heterosexual partners is more beneficial to society because it encourages married couples to have children and provides an example for other couples to do the same.

Because heterosexual couples are always discouraged by gay couples who are in love. Suddenly, it’s a sex-free marriage and gays are to blame. Or something.

“Honey, are you up for a little sexy time?”

“No dear, because gay couples are marrying”

Marriage can be an avenue to procreation, but it’s not the sole or principal reason to get married.

Gay couples have children, too.

“beliefs of a few judges”-unconstitutional Abbott Vs the Conservative SCOTUS decision that is exactly as San Antonio-based District Judge Orlando Garcia ruled the Texas ban unconstitutional in February, because it violated same-sex couples’ 14th Amendment equal protection rights!

People-Corporations and mental health organizations have argued against the ban, including 32 companies such as Amazon.com, Google, Starbucks and Target, as well as the American Psychological and American Psychiatric Associations. In September, 16 attorneys general from states with gay marriage already in place filed an amicus brief arguing their own experiences show only positive effects from allowing gays and lesbians marriage equality.

“Marriage can be an avenue to procreation, but it’s not the sole or principal reason to get married.”, that might not always be true if Abbott and his crowd gets their way! The logic (such as it is) of his argument presumes that hetero couples must have children. Otherwise there is no difference, in kind, between hetero and homosexual marriages. So, get ready for mandatory pregnancy checks, ladies. If you thought Gov. VagProbe was gone, sorry, they are only just beginning to have their small government probes all up in there.

I live in WA State where we’ve had equal marriage for a few years now & there were quite a few birth announcements in the local paper today. We’re also not post-apocalyptic and no one is demanding marrying their toaster. Just sayin’.

The Texas electorate must enjoy being laughed at and ridiculed for electing these 1/2 wits in all the time, while millions of people in this country and possibly around the world use them as a punchline.
Although there is much serious behind all the dismay that they spew, between the Bushwhackers, Perry ‘Dust’, and this guy.. they must make being a stand up comedian’s job that much easier.

That’s right! Sex among 80-year olds have dropped dramatically since this whole same sex marriage thing came about. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for those of child bearing age. Either way, since gay marriage also leads to beastiality, as Rick “man on dog” Santorum contends, we won’t have to worry about human-only procreation. Just think. In a few years, when people are asked about their nationality, they can say, “I’m half Irish and half Rottweiler”

Anyone notice that the spurious argument made by Abbott could as easily been this in the past? “Texas does not need to show that slavery is detrimental but only that continuing it is more desirable and will encourage others to keep slaves.”

Not to mention, of course, that any state does not require the intent or even ability to procreate as a qualification for marriage. Or, for that matter, that same sex couples can and do have children if they wish to do so.

Nowhere has Abbott provided any evidence that heterosexual couples having more children is in fact of any social or economic benefit to the state. The truth is that not pretending some moral outrage over the right of two consenting adults to marry because you don’t approve of their gender would be suicide for a Texas Teapublican.
