Ebola, Schmebola: Here’s The Outbreak The Media Refuses To Report

Posted by | October 12, 2014 18:00 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Top Stories

While ratings-driven cable “news” and conspiracy-obsessed Net nuts freak out over Ebola, there’s a bigger health problem confronting the public, according to LiveScience.com’s Bahar Gholipour:

Sexually transmitted diseases are one major group of diseases that make for ongoing hidden epidemics: In the United States alone, there are nearly 20 million cases of new sexually transmitted infections yearly, from just eight viruses and bacteria, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Perhaps 20 million new cases sounds like a high number. But because infections can persist for a long time, especially in people who aren’t aware they are infected, the number of existing infections at any given time is even higher, at 110 million, according to CDC researchers.

And most Americans are unaware of the most prevalent cooties:

The eight most common STDs in the U.S. are chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B virus (HBV), (genital) herpes, HIV, human papillomavirus (HPV), syphilis and trichomoniasis. About 50.5 million of these current infections are in men, and 59.5 million are in women, according to the CDC’s 2013 report, in which the researchers looked at 2008 data.

Well, not only sexually transmitted diseases, but what is also lost in the news are the deaths of those from the Enterovirus D68. It is very contagious, yet the hate on Obama regarding Ebola means more than saving lives from another serious disease, and it is more easily transmittable.

I am surprised that this hasn’t been blamed on Obama yet. Oh wait, they already do that as well!

    • Carla Akins October 12th, 2014 at 18:58

      or the flu.

But the enterovirus only affects kids so far, and they don’t have big bank accounts. I agree, though, there needs to be much more reporting on this so people can be made aware of the symptoms to look for. I’ve seen it reported but it’s just a 15 second blip on the news.

Infected with an STD, remaining silent about it and spreading it to others is preferable here in GA to providing any real sex education materials to our population to prevent anyone from becoming infected in the first place, because, you know, GA is a conservative state, and if people don’t talk about certain things or address them, it means the issue doesn’t exist or isn’t “that” important.

23,000 Americans DIE every year from antibiotic resistant bacteria, most of it acquired nosocomially [from a hospital or clinic]. 2M are sickened, some having long lasting debilitating symptoms than last years/decades.

Almost all of these are preventable – Scandinavia (which does not allow drug companies and testing labs to control their legislatures) has reduced the rates of antibiotic resistant strains dramatically. Lower death rates, better patient outcomes AND lower costs.

Our healthcare industry is about making money on people’s misfortunes, not in actually healing them or keeping them healthy.

    • Larry Schmitt October 12th, 2014 at 19:47

We don’t allow just the drug companies to run the government, anyone with a billion or two in cold hard cash is more than welcome to have a turn at the reins.

Another great reason for 2014’s ACA free annual HC screenings, diagnosis and treatment!

Before ObamaCare in 2008 half of all US Adults had one of 8 most common STDs in the U.S. chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B virus (HBV), (genital) herpes, HIV, human papillomavirus (HPV), syphilis and trichomoniasis. Anti-government, anti-education science deniers are the greatest STD infected demographic.
