Trouble For Tribble: Video Shows Cops Pistol-Whipping Unarmed Surrendering 16 Year-Old

The Summer of Ferguson has, if nothing else, provided White America with a mountain of evidence that black America really is being terrorized by police brutality, and this week, another bit of that evidence surfaced. Surveillance video obtained by DNAinfo New York shows the tail and of an August 29 foot pursuit between two NYPD officers and awesomely-named 16 year-old Kahreem Tribble. The kid seems to just run out of gas, and gives himself up, only to be assaulted and pistol-whipped by the cops who are chasing him:

Reports indicate they did not offer him a pamphlet, so that’s a relief.

Not that it matters in the context of this assault, but young Mr. Tribble was being pursued for the dastardly crime of marijuana possession, itself a racist charge in modern America. White marijuana use is about equal to black marijuana use (slightly higher overall, actually), yet black people are almost four times as likely to be arrested for it. Opponents of the War on Drugs point to marijuana possession as a victimless, non-violent crime , but in this case, it was violent, and the victim was Kahreem Tribble.

The cops are facing a grand jury over the incident, but if the Summer of Ferguson has made inroads into the minds of white Americans where police brutality is concerned, the jury is still out on…READ MORE

No doubt the “well, he shouldn’t have run” or “if he’s innocent, he shouldn’t have to flee” crowd will chime in. But when I was a kid, me and my friends would often run from cops whether it was from sneaking into a local drive-in, underage drinking at a secret location—and we NEVER worried about the cops beating the crap out of us if we were caught.

And what’s with the “overweight, skinhead goon” look I see on so many [White] cops these days?

    • M D Reese October 8th, 2014 at 13:44

It’s looking more and more like the current batch of cops are wash-outs of the skin head movement.

    • Skydog2 October 8th, 2014 at 15:12

How did the “overweight” cop catch the kid in a foot race?

      • NoInfo ToShare October 8th, 2014 at 20:23

You saw the whole thing, right? Perhaps there were multiple cops chasing this kid both in vehicles and on foot, and this cop got the closest after the kid was winded out.

Aren’t cops aware that they are under a microscope now? Also, they must be aware that surveillance cameras are everywhere. Seems as if the Gestapo instinct is hard to control.

How horribly violent and unnecessary. That one fat bald cop seems out of control, he should be fired and thrown in jail for his violent acts

    • Skydog2 October 8th, 2014 at 14:08

I’m not excusing the police behavior but …… when you make a cop chase you he’s going to be pretty pissed off when he catches you.

      • Maxx44 October 8th, 2014 at 14:11

That’s when self-control enters the picture.

        • R.J. Carter October 8th, 2014 at 14:50

If he’d had self control, he wouldn’t have run from the police.

          • Maxx44 October 8th, 2014 at 16:12

I wasn’t talking about the kid. The cops need to exercise self-control and not beat the crap out of every black person they encounter.

      • tiredoftea October 8th, 2014 at 14:47

Yeah, you are excusing cop behavior!

        • Pick6 October 8th, 2014 at 15:34

Exactly. People who take oaths to “protect and serve” the public whose taxes pay their salaries give up their right to be pissy or moody when they put on the uniform. A cop’s mood is not our problem until they abuse their standing to relieve the pressure of their frustrations using physical force. Nobody should have to worry if cop is po’d (can also be read as “racist POS”) or not. Of course, if you’re white – no worries.

“I’m not excusing the police behavior but…here’s an excuse for the police behavior.”

      • greenfloyd October 9th, 2014 at 22:23

Actually I think some cops, not these particular huff-n-puffs, enjoy it. The thrill of the chase, the adrenalin rush, the pounce and then coup de grace, the kill. It’s a jungle out there!

    • greenfloyd October 9th, 2014 at 01:20

I think Christopher, the OP @ Banter, put it very eloquently in his conclusion:

The trouble with Tribble, however, is that the fearful hostility that blares in the minds of many cops is shared by many of the folks who will make up the grand jury pool, and the jury pools for all of these cases. When you view an entire group of people as a threat because of the way they look, you’ll find any excuse to side with the people who stand between you and the enemy.

Usually cops are given the benefit of the doubt, and often justifiably so. However, with the proliferation of cameras capturing images like this, that facade is quickly crumbling. Cannabis legalization is coming, over 30 states now have some form of “legalization” or “medicalization” laws on the books, much to the chagrin of most of the law enforcement establishment. Of course selling bags of pot out on the street will remain illegal even under regulation. Still, no one deserves to get beaten up for a few bags of pot, ever!

      • tiredoftea October 9th, 2014 at 02:00

Yes, good point. I firmly believe that these camera’s are good things and should be as much a part of the law enforcement uniform as badges and guns.

At some point, the cops will get it. Sooner, I hope, than later.

        • greenfloyd October 9th, 2014 at 02:26

Public pressure to keep cops accountable is important, yet I imagine there’s a legal battle coming over 5th Amendment issues. Besides even Klingons wouldn’t record themselves Trampling Trebbles.

      That’s an astute observation:

…marijuana possession, itself a racist charge in modern America.

The relationship between draconian drug laws and racism is well documented by Michelle Alexander in her book The New JIm Crow. I highly recommend it to everyone.

I guess this poor kid should be thankful they only pistol whipped him. Perhaps it’s because he wasn’t reaching into his wallet for his driver’s license? I hear they shoot blacks in SC for doing as they’re told.

“the dastardly crime of marijuana possession”

He was arrested for 17 bags of marijuana. That’s distribution not possession, right?

Consider it civil disobedience if it eats at your conscience so much.
