Texas Ebola Patient Dies

Posted by | October 8, 2014 11:42 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Top Stories

Thomas Eric Duncan, the first patient to be diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, has died in Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, according to Texas Health Resources.

Duncan, 42, traveled to the United States from Liberia. Others who have been in contact with Duncan are being monitored.

A federal official told CNN that airports in the United States will begin taking the temperatures of arriving passengers who have flight itineraries originating from West African countries where Ebola is concentrated.

The current outbreak of Ebola has killed about 3,400 people across West Africa.

They couldn’t keep him alive with an entire US hospital floor dedicated to him? What an incredibly omnious sign. Wow.

    • mea_mark October 8th, 2014 at 12:11

This is Texas, they don’t really care about stopping communicable diseases. If they did care, they would expand medicaid so the poor could see a doctor, get help and not spread their illness.

      • Ayn Onomous October 8th, 2014 at 12:18

Perhaps they concentrated too much on quarantining rather than healing.

If he had been rich and white …

    • tiredoftea October 8th, 2014 at 12:45

Ebola has a very high mortality rate, regardless of the level of care. But, we can imagine a different outcome had he been diagnosed properly when he first went to the emergency clinic a few days before he was admitted to the hospital.

“They couldn’t keep him alive with an entire US hospital floor dedicated to him? What an incredibly omnious sign. Wow.”

Well, “Ayn Ononmous” … you need to brush up on some ebola FACTS, if you think the hospital has much of a prayer of guaranteeing survival from ebola.

They will do what they can, I’m sure, but it’s just pretty much of a crap-shoot, whether excellent care will in fact save your life. After all, the survival rate is around fifty percent, so one way or another, people WILL die, even with EXCELLENT care.

      • Hirightnow October 8th, 2014 at 17:47

Well, we’ll NEVER top that 50%, surely….it’s impossible to study a disease, even if we can observe it!
I say, just to make you feel better, we slay his family unto the fourth generation, too…just to be safe.
        And burn down the hospital.
And lay waste Dallas, for surely they have sinned.
(FACT 1: EVERY Hospital in the U.S. has contagion protocols, and while this death might have been inevitable, I dispute your 50% estimate.)
(FACT 2: Laying waste to Dallas should be kept on the table as an option, Ebola or not.{I loathe the place!})

Several problems here… starting with unlabeled snark…

“it’s impossible to study a disease, even if we can observe it!”

This is not true, dude. Many, many, many-many-many diseases have been “studied” through history already. That is how we know that 1) you can CATCH a disease… and 2) other handy stuff about diseases…

          “I dispute your 50% estimate.”

Right at the end of the runway, aren’t you?

“Right at the end of the runway, aren’t you?”

Well, aren’t you cute? So I guess the “end of the runway” must be slang for “Correct in all aspects?”

Then yes, I guess I AM right at the end of the runway… and about to take off…

BTW, when someone PROVES that you are spinning a falsehood, or are simply, utterly WRONG, it IS good form to publicly admit it. THAT is how you find your way back into the sun, dude… I should know; I’ve done it more than once myself.

It only hurts for a minute…

You know what happens when you’re at the end of the runway?
They keep going over your head.

Jeez, dude, that went right over my head… Please, explain this one to me some more…

Clue: when a catch-phrase can be taken in two opposed ways… it’s not much of an addition to the conversation…

As for “we” … YOU are the only one who even mentioned that word in the above exchange. Either YOU are the one “at the end of the runway” (in your sense), or you have an actual HOLE in your head that the planes can land through. If I were you, I don’t think I’d even talk about it, because someone might get the idea there’s a mouse in YOUR pocket…

Meanwhile of course, I must congratulate you on the handy accomplishment of what must be your main goal here… the amnesia you are attempting to spread concerning the POINTS in this discussion, concerning the whats and wherefores of EBOLA (remember Ebola?). You know, the POINTS that you got WRONG, and that I CORRECTED you on…

Y’Know, ever since you started shoving your innuendos down my throat, I’ve just forgotten everything else completely… but keep it up; I’m starting to like the taste…

Yes, the crack staff at this hospital followed all the correct procedures in admitting this man, several days after he was sent away from the emergency room! There is a liability lawsuit waiting to happen here. Would Mr. Duncan still be alive and battling this virus had he been given treatment a few days earlier?
He caught Ebola while trying to help someone else. His bravery should be noted as his family mourns his death.

Reading your link, it seems fishy that antibodies were not extracted and then applied to treat the lone US infected patient. “Weeks also said the family was frustrated that Duncan was not given donated blood from Ebola survivors. Weeks said hospital officials told the family “that the blood wasn’t a match.”-First the hospital sent Duncan home to germinate & possibly infecting Dallas.
