Anthony Fauchi: Politicizing Ebola ‘Distration At Best And Very Annoying At Worst’

Dr. Anthony Fauchi Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and he dispelled some of the myths being spread about Ebola.  Fauchi says, “…we will not have an outbreak here. We may have a another case come over….The fear that there’s going to be an outbreak similar to what we see in Africa is something that shouldn’t even be on the radar screen of the American public because that won’t happen.”

Fauchi also spoke out against fear mongering and politicizing, and explained why we shouldn’t quarantine other countries.

COLMES: You’ve got people like Rush Limbaugh saying that Obama purposely wants Ebola to come to the country, I mean this has got to drive you nuts as a scientist, right?

DR. FAUCI: I wouldn’t say it drives me nuts, but it certainly is a distraction at best and very annoying at worst. I always say and my colleagues in the healthcare and public health sector say, “Let evidence be the thing that directs your opinion and directs what you do.” Not just wild speculation so when you look at something like completely isolating a country, don’t let any planes in or out, just completely isolate them. That, in fact, would probably make matters worse, because the best way to protect Americans is to suppress the epidemic in West Africa, and if you shut them off to the rest of the world, it’s only going to get much worse there and spread to other African countries.

And, on the issue of catching Ebola from undocumented immigrants coming over the border:

DR. FAUCI: When people start talking about people coming in from Guatemala giving us Ebola, what are they talking about? It’s just connecting the wrong dots of different kinds of fears and opinions that you have about immigration. This has nothing to do with Ebola.

    slightly off-topic…but…

anybody seen how dr. oz is reacting? let’s just say, he’s reacting about how you’d expect a physician to react that’s been called to testify in front of congress because of his unscrupulous shilling for “miracle weight-loss” and “amazing energy”…

dr. oz is a charlatan, taking advantage of over-weight housewives and uneducated rubes, and he is spreading misinformation about ebola, as well…

    my sister thinks he’s god…geez…

I detest the man – you know, that whole thousand sun intensity thing. His pseudo-science bullshit and refusal to take a stand on vaccines makes him dangerous. He’s Pat Robertson with a medical degree.

i’d like to know how oprah feels about oz these days–you know, she’s the one who groomed him for his own show…

he’s just awful, with his miracle potions…

…the reports made by affected States Parties and the currently available information, the Director-General accepted the Committee’s assessment and on 8 August 2014 declared the Ebola outbreak in West Africa a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

    WHO

CDC Oct. 2, 2014: Interim Guidance about Ebola Infection for Airline Crews, Cleaning Personnel, and Cargo Personnel

It seems to me it would be a lot simpler and effective to enact a ban on non-essential travel to/from West Africa, where the situation appears to be deteriorating; over 100 dying yesterday in Sierra Leon alone. From there the disease has spread to the US and Europe. Today the Independent (UK) reports Ebola outbreak: Spread of deadly disease across Europe is ‘unavoidable’, warns WHO chief
