who will be the first to say “another good guy with a gun” before anyone knows if the shooter was legally in possession of the gun, or was, (probably) a convicted felon who obtained his gun illegally

Since it happened at an American Legion post, without more info I would guess former service member that probably suffers from PTSD. Probably needs help and shouldn’t have had a gun but without good background checks and an attitude that everyone should have a gun …

the hall was rented out, it was not an American Legion function at 2:00 am sunday morning
Saint_Augustine October 6th, 2014 at 13:25
Bullshit, at 2 AM Sunday they wern’t an outside group, they were the regulars. The guy was more than likely drunk and pissed at the woman for rejecting his last call advances.

you’re a moron, this isn’t a bar it’s a rental hall

Clearly he’s not a good guy.

doesn’t matter whether or not he was a “good guy”.
the story underlines the fact that the more guns there are in society, the greater the chances that you will be killed or injured through either malice or negligence.
more guns do not make us safer.
Red Eye Robot October 6th, 2014 at 11:59
Really? There are 3x more guns in society since 1990 and the homicide rate is less than half, There are 11,000,000 more people legally carrying concealed than 1990 and fewer murders
Obewon October 6th, 2014 at 12:36
Reducing gun deaths was 1993’s Assault Weapons Ban endorsed by Reagan & All of then living presidents until GWB’s repeal whereafter gun deaths continued rising to 2011’s 32,163, because guns shoot 22-43 times more friends & family than any intruder.
1/2 of US households owned guns in the late 1970’s where today just 32% of homes have guns. States with the most guns per capita have the most gun deaths per capita #1 Alaska, etc.
Red Eye Robot October 7th, 2014 at 06:04
nobody repealed the AWB it expired. secondly the justice department has acknowledged it had no effect on crime in the US third, the US homicide rate was over 12 per 100,000, it is now about 5.7 per 100,000. Your Bogus “Gun Deaths” numbers include suicide. Guns cause suicide like rain causes drought Canada’s suicide rate is slightly higher than the US but only 15% of Canadians kill themselves with guns. Guns are highly restricted in Japan and handguns non existent yet their suicide rate is 42% higher than the US.
Saying states that have more guns have more deaths is the height of disingenuousness. It plays games with statistics. 3/4 of Michigan’s homicides were committed in 2 cities with a combined population of about 825,000. for your phony baloney plastic banana statistic to be accurate, those 800,000 people would have to own 3/4 of the guns in Michigan even though they are about 8.5% of the states population. More to the point, Chicago and Houston have similar sized populations, similar median household income. Chicago has strict gun control Houston does not. Chicago’s homicide rate is double Houston’s. Baltimore, A city with some of America’s strictest gun control laws was one of only 2 major cities to see an increase in homicides in 2013.
as to your contention that fewer people own guns, even if it’s true, SO WHAT
the argument was that more guns cause more death, there are 3x more guns and fewer deaths. furthermore there are 11,000,000+ more people legally carrying guns. Concealed carry permit holders have a lower rate of all crimes including murder than even police officers.

FYI> Australia’s gun registration & buybacks decreased homicide and suicide rates by 2/3! Conservative PM John Howard cites a study (pdf) by Andrew Leigh of Australian National University and Christine Neill of Wilfrid Laurier University finding that:
A) the firearm homicide rate fell by 59%,
B) and the firearm suicide rate fell by 65%, in the decade after the law was introduced
C) without a parallel increase in non-firearm homicides and suicides, http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2012/08/02/did-gun-control-work-in-australia/

Guns have become the panacea for twenty-first century ailments.
Frightened? Paranoid? Somebody insulted you, made you angry? Nobody else’s rights are more important than your right to fatally set them straight with a gun?
Whatever. Doesn’t matter. Guns are no longer the last resort. Instead, they have morphed into the first response for All Occasions — both real or imaginary.

What’s the point of having the right to keep and bear arms (never mind the confusing “well-regulated militia” bit) if you can’t shoot random people whenever you damn well please.
You libs want to restrict my gun rights by telling me who I can and cannot shoot.

Nothing stops a drunk with a gun except, uhh, uhhh, I got nothin’! But, hey, while we’re here, thanks NRA for all you do to make guns easy to get, hard to trace and easy to use in bars and restaurants! Your strategy of guns everywhere, for everyone at anytime sure worked well here!

It is going to be a very difficult choice for the NRA this month to name its shooter of the month…so many choices and its only the 6th
