Report: CDC Confirms First U.S. Diagnosed Case Of Ebola In Texas

Posted by | September 30, 2014 18:30 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Top Stories

The first diagnosed case of Ebola in the United States is that of a patient being treated at a Dallas, Texas, hospital, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Tuesday.

CNN reports:

Several other Americans were diagnosed in West Africa and then brought to the United States for treatment.
The person who first tested positive for Ebola in the United States is a patient at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, hospital spokesman Stephen O’Brien said Tuesday.
The CDC is expected to provide more details on the case in a press conference at 5:30 p.m.

“An individual traveling from Liberia has been diagnosed with Ebola in the United States,” Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC, said in a conference call Tuesday afternoon.

That person left Liberia on Sept. 19th and arrived in the U.S. the following day. They had no symptoms when they arrived, but began developing symptoms last Friday, a week after leaving Liberia, according to The Washington Post

In a statement, the Texas Department of Health Services said that the patient is at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. The patient is described as “an adult with a recent history of travel to West Africa” and was admitted into an isolation unit at the hospital Sunday after developing Ebola-like symptoms “days after returning to Texas from West Africa

Watch courtesy of CNN:

The issue is, will it start spreading, since it’s not a particularly contagious disease aside from coming into contact with the blood or body fluids of an animal or person who is infected. Even then, those fluids would have to reach a break in the skin or the mucous membranes found around your eyes, mouth and nose.

Caring for or burying a person who has the disease is also a way to get Ebola. Also, too, contaminated needles or surfaces, but it’s not contagious in how SARS is, for example.

If one has Ebola, there’s a 50% chance of death and it’s painful. There is no cure at this point. Symptoms may not appear for 21 days, which could be a factor in how one person can unknowingly spread it to others. There is no evidence that it spreads between people through the air.

I just ordered a bunch of elderberry fruit puree to make a batch of elderberry wine that has very strong anti-viral properties. What a great excuse to drink homemade elderberry wine in Texas.

You’re in luck! The Ebola virus is self aware and is only targeting right wing conservatives in Dallas. CDC has this single U.S. case very well quarantined with a U.S. treatment survival rate of 60%.

I think Perry and Cruz should pay him a visit and give him a great big hug….

I was raised in Texas… mind if I ask where? I always liked Austin the most.

If you have a twitter account follow me at @mea_mark:disqus on twitter and I will share more O/T info. Grew up in Austin and now live in rural central Texas on a ranch somewhere north of Austin in the middle of nowhere surrounded by right-wing gun-nuts. I keep my location kinda quite so I don’t get blown away by the wackos.

I can relate, I have been wearing a wrist brace for about three months. Pretty sure I got a stress fracture at the top of my arm bone from the swelling of the bone as it healed. Finally getting better, another week or two and I hope to be back to normal.

              • tiredoftea September 30th, 2014 at 21:32

That goes a long way to explaining the excessive amounts of elderberry wine you were bragging about earlier!

That is bad, I will get more surgery and then just a soft brace in a week

I guess using the military to invade Africa to fight ebola didn’t work.

    • majii September 30th, 2014 at 20:19

The troops weren’t sent to Africa to “fight” Ebola. They were sent to perform support services. You’d know this if you had gone to the WH web site and read it like way I did. Their primary function is building mobile hospital units, RER.

    • William September 30th, 2014 at 20:54

Engineer units were sent to build medical facilities.
      BUT
Do you suppose they arrived in those Humvees with the belt fed machine guns?
      You know?
      Like at the Bundy ranch?

      • mea_mark September 30th, 2014 at 20:56

Loaded with ammo that shoots vaccines … Yeah sure, why not, it is all fantasy, this reality, is it not?

Rick Perry can’t claim he came over our Southern border.

Could be, they could say something like that to alleviate fears of it purposefully being brought here. You know how those RWNJs are on the far right when comes to stirring up fear.

I wonder how many right wingers realize that the first American treated here at home for Ebola but diagnosed abroad was a physician working in Africa for Samaritan’s Purse. SP is the humanitarian organization sponsored by none other than right wing preacher Franklin Graham.

So Rev. Franklin Graham is just another minion in the vast Kenyan Muslim usurper plot to destroy America as we know it. That would be the same Kenyan Muslim usurper who is an incompetent community organizer who cannot accomplish anything.

    Go figure.

Here is a rarity. Franklin Graham in his own words thanking the government and the UN. Maybe hell has frozen over.

On July 26, I learned that one of our key Samaritan’s Purse doctors, Kent Brantly, medical director of our case management center in Liberia, had tested positive for the Ebola virus. In that moment my heart sank and I could hardly speak. As I hung up the phone, overwhelmed with uncertainty and anguish, I prayed—along with hundreds, and soon thousands, of others around the world.

Seven days later, with God’s help and assistance from the U.S. State Department, the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the world watched Brantly, dressed in hazmat gear, slowly walk into a special isolation and treatment unit at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. We owe a debt of gratitude to all these partners, and we thank God for his release from the hospital today.

So we do nothing and continue to let people into our country from places where Ebola is rampant, thereby endangering us all?

        Can we isolate Texas now?
