Republicans Finally Come Out In Favor Of U.S. Ground Troops In Syria
On Sunday morning’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos, Boehner took the familiar sitcom mother-in-law posture we’ve all come to know and love, first answering the question about American boots in Syria by saying “The president doesn’t want to do that,” and later insisting that Congress would love to vote on authorizing the action in Syria and Iraq, but Obama didn’t ask for their opinion. Along the way, though, Stephanopoulos managed to pin Boehner down.
Boehner first tried the dodge that the president shouldn’t be saying we won’t use ground troops. “If I were the president, I probably wouldn’t have talked about what I wouldn’t do,” Speaker Boehner said. “And maybe we can get enough of these forces trained and get ‘em on the battlefield. But somebody’s boots have to be there.”
“And if no one else will step up, would you recommend putting American boots on the ground?” Stephanopoulos asked.
“We have no choice,” Boehner replied. “These are barbarians. They intend to kill us. And if we don’t destroy them first, we’re gonna pay the price.”
The Speaker also made another important, point-blank admission toward the end of this clip…READ MORE

If this is how he feels he should call for a return to Washington and demand a vote from both houses tomorrow, this is what a leader would do.
Now as to whether or not we use out men and women to root out the last of what remains of isis after degrading them w/air power should not be broadcast before hand.

It’s scary that this boozer is second in line behind Biden to become President.
arc99 September 28th, 2014 at 18:17
Ullysses Grant was a boozer and he did ok both as a general and as President.
Boehner’s problem is that he is incompetent and bereft of ideas, even when stone cold sober.

Well – it took him a few days to two step to this point. As to putting “boots on the ground” which boots? Boots of already maimed and injured US troops? Troops – many of whom have not even received the physical and mental care they need from the Bush era fiasco? Or do we have “boots” on stand-by ready to gush forth?

I say we draft the rich and the children of those that own stock in the MIC. Let them go fight the wars they want so bad.

bill o’reilly will debate you on this idea. A militia is much better and it will get us in trouble faster

Starting with Cheney’s.

We tried that during the Viet Nam war. All the poor and under privileged were sent into combat and the rich and powerful obtained deferments, went on to become VP and sent everybody else’s kids to fight in wars they created.

We don’t put troops on the ground in the middle east except to support the activities of those from the middle east and we do it from behind. Americans do not need to be on the ground in the middle east except in small numbers in a supporting roll. No more Americans on the front lines in a ground combat mission. If the people in the middle east don’t want to man up and defend their homeland, then we can contain the enemy from the air. When the people of the middle east decide peace is better than war and they are ready to root out those that want to perpetually fight and squabble over their religious differences, then we can help them from behind.
Until then the US should be working to develop alternate sources of energy so that we are not at all dependent on oil from the middle east or anywhere else. Demand for oil and the wealth flowing to the middle east is what is funding the aggression. It is past time to cut it off.

This should surprise no one. It’s common knowledge that republicans are war hawks, and they would have come around, eventually, with agreeing to have boots on the ground. Personally, I think this is a big mistake on Obama’s part. I’m afraid this isn’t going to turn out well – and I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think so.
mea_mark September 28th, 2014 at 19:12
Republicans just want to be different from Obama. If Obama says no boots they will say yes to boots. In the end though all the republicans really want is the money to flow toward the MIC.

These same GOP balked at Syria’s WMD surrender to POTUS Obama’s US, NATO & UN troops who then destroyed all Syrian chemical weapons.
NW10 September 28th, 2014 at 19:13
Be thankful that it’s President Obama making these calls, and not President McCain or President Romney. He has a level head and thus far hasn’t made any serious mistakes, especially in regards to foreign policy. This is the same man who made a gutsy call to send SEALS into Pakistan to kill bin Laden and succeed, as well as a drone strike that killed the leader of al-Shabab, yet you dare to second guess him?
Bunya September 28th, 2014 at 20:00
I’m not second guessing him. I’m just a bit more cautious when it comes to war. Boots on the ground sound suspiciously like war to me.

US troops to invade Syria is their GOP midterm erection strategy but most voters aren’t going to fall for that ‘fool me once.. ugh..ugh.. can’t get fooled again’-GWB. The Ted Cruz Green Eggs & Tea Party spammers aren’t likely to embrace $6 T+ man Halliburton Cheney’s Hypocrite GOP preying for US ground troops to invade Syria following their sequester shutdown decreasing US Military budgets. But hey that’s probably too logical.

The GOP loves any war on two fronts while their military contractor prime constituents supply both sides! Double entendre applies best to repubs, who rarely figure out what their own big picture is.

It’s beginning to look like the Public is changing their mind about putting OUR “boots” (AKA our young men and women) on the ground.. There are signs that the fear mongering is working… I just have a bad feeling about this, because I haven’t seen anything work out so far.. It just seems to be getting worse on many different levels

Gee, too bad Congress is on vacation yet again. Otherwise, they could draft a war resolution, and come up with the millions or billions needed to fund it. (Maybe they can cut funding to Medicare or childrens lunch programs?) Oh well, I’m sure ISIS will patiently wait a couple more months before doing anything bad…..

The one and only reason they are in favor of ground troops is because Obama is against it. They are going to use this to paint him as weak. If Obama said he favored grounds troops , they would be opposed. Republicans lie, that’s what they do.

Republicans are in favor of using ground troops because it means more monies being taken out of the US and placed in their offshore bank accounts with absolutely no accountability.
