While interviewing Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif) for his long-running “Better Know a District” series, Colbert made the following “joke” about Huffman being a member of both the “wine caucus” and the “cheese caucus”…READ MORE

The sky is falling, the sky is falling! With everything going on around the world, is this really newsworthy?

I don’t know if it’s correct, but I heard that “cracker” came from cracking the whip, which of course was only done by the white masters. I always thought it had to do with corn likker….

Wow, I never heard where the term cracker comes from, but I bet if these right wingers heard it came from cracking the whip, they would proudly claim that title.

Thats one explanation of the Etymology of the term “cracker”..
There are several others as well.

I love the faux poutrage some (right wing conservative) whites exhibit when the hear ‘cracker.’ Acting as if they’re insulted when the truth is, they don’t give a rat’s patootie if someone calls them that. And acting as if it’s just as bad as the n-word…..

It’s like the difference between between calling someone a subhuman, unworthy of equal consideration, but worthy of a beating at the slightest hiccup… and calling someone a vicious bully who treats you cruelly.

Or more simply, the historical baggage creates a bully/victim relationship.

The word a bully uses to denigrate a victim is easily more pungent and taboo than a term the victim uses to utter in contempt for those that hurt them (and their families).
Neither are truly funny, it just so happens that “cracker” is also a boring food item that creates an ironic twist to the term, which then makes it inherently funny.

(Geez, did not mean to get all deep and crap… but hey, kinda not quite sober. ;))

I believe that only a racist who is upset that he cant openly or on television use the “N-Word” to describe “Black” people would be upset with Colbert or anyone else saying “Cracker”…(BFD)

‘Entire Republican Party’ Racist. In 1981 Reagan’s Lee Atwater Agreed: “You start out in 1954 by saying, “Ni**er, ni**er, ni**er.” By 1968 you can’t say “ni**er”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites.… “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “Ni**er, ni**er.” http://www.thenation.com/article/170841/exclusive-lee-atwaters-infamous-1981-interview-southern-strategy
