Is Spanking Your Children Sexual Assault?

The child abuse allegations against Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson continue to raise important, unanswered questions, and Slate columnist Jillian Keenan asks an interesting one, albeit indirectly: Is spanking your children a form of sexual assault? Her Slate article makes the case that spanking is sexual, just a day after I made the case that it’s assault.

In Keenan’s column, entitled “Spanking Is Great for Sex; Which is why it’s grotesque for parenting,” she courageously shares her own spanking fetish, and relates surprisingly vociferous and frequent condemnation by others, who, she says, refer to her sexual preference as “pedophilic,” among other things. I say it’s surprising because I’ve always been under the impression, based on what I’ve heard, that spanking is a fairly pedestrian expression of kink even for people who just want to feel kinky. I’d be willing to bet that attached to many of those wagging fingers are quite a few bodies with redder keisters than they’d care to admit.

That descriptor, though, led Keenan to wonder what those same people think of performing the same act on a non-consenting (by definition) child. “I realize that many well-meaning parents will disagree with me, but spanking kids is gross” she writes, because, among other reasons, “Butts are sexual. That’s why the area is one of the few “private” parts that, along with breasts and genitals, we feel the need to cover with a swimsuit.”

That’s a cute equivalency, to be sure, but what elevates Keenan’s argument beyond mere cleverness is thisREAD MORE

If she can’t tell the difference between playful spanking between consenting adults and whipping a child bloody with a switch in an angry rage, then I’m not sure what to say to her except GET HELP.

It’s only ‘pedophilic’ if you make her put on the plaid miniskirt and white blouse first.

Wait, what, that’s pedophilic? Oh, crap!

Some people’s mind, are so sexual preoccupied, that I wish they would just get laid. This was not a chain and whip moment. This was taking child discipline too far.

the old ‘spare the rod and spoil the child’ meme is still relevant today. I only spanked my son a couple of times during his formative years.
There’s a big difference between spanking a disobedient child and the sexual spanking the author refers to.
Of course, bruises, cuts etc. means you’ve gone to far/to hard. Then you are in trouble.

    • R.J. Carter September 18th, 2014 at 17:32

I also only had to resort to spanking a few times. I can’t remember the last time I had to even threaten it now.

I’m not persuaded by the argument, although I don’t think that spanking, in and of itself, is effective regardless of any other implications that it might have on the politics of it.

One thing that I’ve noticed in several public discussions of this is the number of times that black male and female commentators have shared their experience as children with spanking, including switches, at the hands of their parents. The reasons given by the parents is the presumed lesson that spanking, hitting, is to help the children to learn not to act out in front of white people because the punishment there is so much worse, lynchings, beatings and being shot with little to no provocation being the fear driving the punishment.

The frequency in which this reason came up, even with the football player, is frightening and, if true, is an unsettling example of the degree to which racism has deeply settled into the family lives of black families. We have so much work to do to redress these wrongs.

“Is Spanking Your Children Sexual Assault?”
Only in extremely rare cases and by extraordinarily disturbed people.

“but what elevates Keenan’s argument beyond mere cleverness…”
Nothing elevates it beyond cleverness, it is not clever, it is full of pure folly.

Just on the surface, with her equating the butt w/sexual characteristics, she would have had to also explore ‘people who spank think it’s funny’ cause the butt is also a source of humor… movies w/being shot in the butt(laugh track here), the ‘butt’ of jokes, ha ha see them fall on their butt…

After reading her article, it seems to me to be one of or both of two things… the need to justify her preferences and/or write something ‘controversial enough’ to get read and passed around for her own fame. After seeing her write things like:
“Spanking is a sex act. It has been for a very long time—probably even longer than it’s been a parenting choice.”
Probably? either is or isn’t or don’t lay it out if not known by the writer.
And then, what’s even ‘funnier’, is just a few paragraphs later:
    “Corporal punishment has always existed”…

For me, after reading and seeing her style, if she went for getting more readers to follow her, she lost my readership.

    My view
