If there’s anything that annoys liberals more than the constant derpy comparisons of Barack Obama to Ronald Reagan, it is President Obama’s (and before that, Senator Obama’s) constant stream of praise for Saint Ronnie. You know what I’m talking about, shit like this:
Yes, we can… throw up a little.
We’ve all probably believed/wished that this was just some shit Obama had to say to get “Reagan (White) Democrats” to vote for him, and in a New York Times article this past weekend, that cherished hope was confirmed. According to New York Times White House correspondent Peter Baker, the President let Reagan have it while meeting with guests before his big speech last Tuesday…READ MORE

Almost sounds like Obama would like to accidentally on purpose take out Assad.

Especially now that WSJ, et al published that Assad’s Syrian Christian Oil Broker is buying ISIS stolen oil for Syria’s government, thereby funding Syrian & Iraqi terrorist beheadings by Syrian insurgents. What a Great Oil Party plan.

I don’t like long comments, but I’ll make an exception here.
I am a partner in a business in Lebanon and travel to the
Middle East fairly often. A few years ago at a dinner in Beirut, I talked with
a UN official and asked him who or what emboldened the terrorists to openly take
on the U.S. His answer was one word: Reagan. He explained the bombing of the
Marine barracks (and the French barracks) was a test to see how America would
respond. Regan cut and ran. His feeble attempt at retaliation was to send the
USS New Jersey to lob some 16” rounds into Lebanon. Many of the rounds landed
in the mountains east of Beirut where many Christians live. That infuriated a
large portion of the Lebanese population since the Christians are very much
U.S. allies.
An investigation revealed that the powder canisters on the
New Jersey were a mixture of new and very old, weakened ones. This meant that
the gunners on the NJ, unbeknownst to them, were sending shells inland without
any way of knowing where they might land. The results were catastrophic.
The result of Reagan’s missteps was to show the terrorists
that they had little to fear from Ronnie. The rest, as they say, is history.

Lebanese Christians might be US allies, but Ted Cruz did not do them any favors by claiming they were anti-Semitic, just because they don’t agree (with good reason) that Israel is the best friend of Middle-Eastern Christians.
Republicans are tone-deaf on the Middle East. That’s why Iraq turned into such a mess. And why they can support Syrian rebels one day and want to bomb them the next.

In the spring of ’83 the Marines were being shelled by Syrian-sponsored Druze militia artillery located in those (Chouf) mountains. They kept it up till finally, in September, the Lebanese army moved on Druze, Palestinian and Syrian army positions in the Chouf mountains and we supported them with naval gunfire.
By then we knew the bombings of the barracks and embassy were the work of Hezbollah at the behest of Iran.
The shelling by the New Jersey was not in response to the bombings of the barracks or embassy.
Ronald “Dutch” Reagan promised when he was inaugurated and afterward that we would respond swiftly and forcefully to terrorists. You are correct that his flaccid response to the bombing of the Marine barracks and the 2 bombings of the embassy emboldened the terrorists.
Hezbollah, at the behest of Iran, kidnapped more and more Americans and held them for ransom, which “Dutch” Reagan paid in the arms-for-hostages deal. The captured and tortured to death our CIA chief of station. We obtained a video of it and still did nothing but reward the Iranians for attacking America.

The Beirut bombing was a tragedy. I never really heard an apology from RayGun. He was one sorry, President. President has a lot of respect for the Military men/women. They needed to know that someone cared about this incident. It very rarely gets mentioned.

If this third-hand account is correct, President Obama took it easy on Reagan, rather than “blast” him. Here are some details that were omitted:
The Marines were sent in twice. Conservatives get uncomfortable and go mute when it is pointed out to them that the first deployment was to rescue the PLO surrounded by the Israelis who were being destroyed until Ronald “Dutch” Reagan decided to rescue the terrorists. After the terrorists were safe, the Marines were withdrawn; only to be sent in a few weeks later after Syria had Lebanese president-elect Gemayel blowed up and Phalangists murdered about 700 people in the Shatila and Sabra refugee camps.
Ronald “Dutch” Reagan sent these Marines into the middle of a war zone in which about a half dozen different factions were fighting for reasons we little understood and had nearly no intelligence on. “Dutch” Reagan decided it would be a good idea to order the Marines to walk around with unloaded weapons.
Another brainstorm of “Dutch” Reagan’s administration was to place the Marines in the middle of an airport where there was no cover, and refused requests for them to take the strategic high ground, consisting of high rises and mountains nearby. This gave the enemy perfect positions for observers who helped artillery and mortar crews walk their rounds right into our guys. By the time they left, our Marines were deployed underground in buried shipping containers.
Also omitted was the fact that our embassy was bombed twice, in addition to the Marine baracks..
We were able to determine who launched the attacks on the embassy and had satellite imagery of the mock-up of our embassy the terrorists used to rehearse. Reagan ordered an air strike, to be conducted jointly with the French. With some planes in the air, Secretary of Defense Weinberger called off the attack, without asking Reagan or anyone else. Reagan could have launched the attack the next day but chose not to.
Mustaffa Badr al-Din, the Hezbollah terrorist who built the bombs for the attacks on the Marine baracks and our embassy was captured in October 1983 by Kuwait. Did Reagan try to extradite him?
Hell no.
Ronald “Dutch” Reagan, by now mired in arms-for-hostages, tried to pressure Kuwait into turning al-Din loose.

That’s right. They could not carry loaded guns in a war zone.
