Marianne Williamson On Race, Repentence, And Reparations

Posted by | August 21, 2014 12:00 | Filed under: Religion Top Stories

In the wake of the happenings in Ferguson, Missouri, the best-selling author and recent California congressional candidate has a terrific op-ed and analysis posted this morning to HuffPo:

What is happening today in Ferguson, Missouri, had it roots hundreds of years ago, and nothing less than pulling out those roots will heal the situation today. America needs to reconcile with our racial history — seeking genuine atonement and making meaningful amends. Until such time, tortured race relations will continue to plague us with more and more tragic results.

It’s interesting that we even use the phrase “race relations,” given how little we register that this is even about a relationship. The relationship between blacks and whites as groups in America is psychologically and emotionally dysfunctional, to say the least, and until this is dealt with on the level of the cause and not just effects, we will continue to play out over and over again the cycle of violence at its core.

It’s difficult to deal emotionally with the history of slavery in America, which is why many whites have chosen not to. Yet it’s imperative that we do, because until we see clearly the line of development leading from slavery to the Civil War to the Ku Klux Klan to the civil rights movement to “benign neglect” to the “prison-industrial complex,” America will continue to misunderstand the real problem. This is not just about how many bullets were shot into Michael Brown. The shots that matter most here are way, way too many to count.

    It certainly doesn’t help when the SCOTUS says racism isn’t a problem anymore. Ignorance coming from the highest levels perpetuates more ignorance. It is time to remove the ignorant leaders and replace them with those that will honestly deal with all the issues this country needs to deal with.

    IMO, she is spot on. Political correctness leads to dismissal of much needed conversations. We need to talk about our personal history as well as the history of the country we reside in.

    • tiredoftea August 21st, 2014 at 14:09

      It’s not so much PC as white fear of having a difficult conversation and the apathy that results from working to avoid it.

        Many have gotten so intellectual (smart mouthed) they got lost in their own heads. Not good for progress and discussions.

    • olford August 22nd, 2014 at 13:39

      The best way is to be an example, and love your neighbor and do good to those around you. We will live our belief and love everyday. How about you ? Are done just talking about ?

      • Suzanne McFly August 22nd, 2014 at 14:39

        No, I live a life where I give respect to all until I am given a reason not to, why do you ask?

        • olford August 22nd, 2014 at 15:02

          There is nothing wrong with that. One must serve respect and truth if one excepting any in return. That’s love the neighbor and do good to others. Point is taking and trying to sound wise (safe or PC ) and not being open and honest with people by far does more harm than good. Live it honestly it’s so much more fun and rewarding. Truth is always sweet.

    Martin Luther King Jr. was able to bring about change in racial relations and he did it without violence, winning the Nobel Peace Prize along the way. He was a man of God who used his position as a Baptist Pastor to bring about change through love. Have you ever heard Rev. Al Sharpton or Rev. Jesse Jackson invoke God in a positive way?

    The hard work of MLK jr has been marginalized by the actions of a few prominent black leaders, who instead of uniting have been dividing. Even our own president takes the side of blacks whenever a black/white event takes place where it looks like the black might have been a victim, but never in reverse. Eric Holder is always bemoaning racist America even though he works for the first black American president who was elected two times by a large majority.

    Considering the 2012 demographics President Obama did not get elected without white votes. White, non-Hispanics comprised 71.1 of the voting public, while Blacks represented 12.5 Those stats suggest a less racist America than race baiters Sharpton and Jackson would have you believe.

    As a percentage, there are just as many if not more blacks who are racist against whites then the other way around. And they are cheered on by the likes of Sharpton and Jackson who are beating the racist drums everyday.

    Much needed conversation is one that many refuse to have. They consider it racist to discuss the subject. Bill O’Reilly was one of the few brave media folks to offer an opinion. http://www.cnsnews.com/video/national/oreilly-americas-race-problem

    “White” America has provided opportunities for people of all race and have changed laws to give somw an advantage in hiring and education.

    You want to make a difference in race relations in America? Then don’t call someone a racist unless you are absolutely certain, and make sure you call all those who demonstrate racial behavior regardless of their race.

    • tiredoftea August 21st, 2014 at 23:29

      You spent a lot of time and very little thought in putting this apologia together. The hallmark of racism is the denial of the majority in the oppression of the minority. Want a little proof? Try this on: “”White” America has provided opportunities for people of all race and have changed laws to give somw an advantage in hiring and education.”

      That you believe that “White America has provided opportunities” is evidence enough of your blindness.

        If white America consists of the majority and were the majority lawmakers, who would you suggest is responsible for creating opportunities?

        • tiredoftea August 22nd, 2014 at 20:30

          So, here’s a thought experiment for you: What is the historic rate of black unemployment, especially youth unemployment, during economic slowdowns/recessions? What is the rate of black unemployment vis a vis white unemployment as our economy has recovered following those periods? What is the rate of investment in black owned businesses by banks in minority neighborhoods? What is the historic rate of employment in corporate positions before 1964? What is the percentage of black corporate senior management since 1964?

          Final questions; If “White America” did and is doing such a wonderful job, would we have the economy we have now with the disparity’s between groups? What’s the answer?

          • olford August 22nd, 2014 at 23:03

Everyone can live right if your true and honest” The statistics show a much higher rate of unemployment in the “black community” compared to the “white community” Does this mean that Black folks aren’t working hard and being “responsiblies?” People like you make me sick

      I wish those Democratic / KKK would not have reversed the civil right passed in 1866 act and taken away from them in 1875. Military was not racially divided until Woodrow Wilson in 1917. ( Democrat ) We really don’t have a big problem in that area because like me and many millions we love all people no matter what color. That is here that each of us judge by the content of character not the color your skin. The only folks that push that lie is people like Al Sharpton and the like who make money from other peoples pain. Very small group of haters. % .00001 ?? Shame on those folks. • olford August 23rd, 2014 at 12:05

        Sir you need some true history lessons. Civil rights act of 1866 give our black brothers and sisters equal rights until Democrat / KKK groups took over in congress and repealed them in 1875. Republincans rescued them and your party enslaved them again. The NRA was founded in 1871 by republincans and Christian groups to arm our black brothers and sisters so they could protect themselves from the Democart / KKK groups as they were being persecuted by your group. 1964 when civil rights were given back to them, Democrats had both houses of congress, yet without the 180 Republincan votes that bill would not have passed. LBJ voted against civil rights all through out his life until he was forced as president to sign the bill.
        As for Jim Crow laws, that was Democrat / KKK folks in your side in the south that did that. Not the north republincans. The northern Christians, republincans as well as many others in the north were against slavery for a 200 years before your people were. Please don’t make statements that are clearly racist combined with lies. Have a Bless Day

        • OldLefty August 23rd, 2014 at 12:39

          I think YOU are the one who need the history lessons.

          The Civil Rights
          Act of 1964;

          Total Votes;

          The House ;

          Southern Democrats: 7–87
          (7–93%)

          Southern Republicans: 0–10 (0–100%)

          Northern Democrats: 145–9
          (94–6%)

          Northern Republicans: 138–24
          (85–15%)

          The Senate version:

          Southern Democrats: 1–20
          (5–95%)

          Southern Republicans: 0–1
          (0–100%)

          Northern Democrats: 45–1
          (98–2%)

          Northern Republicans: 27–5
          (84–16%)

          LBJ told Kennedy aide Ted Sorenson that “I know the risks are great and we might lose the South, but those sorts of states may be lost anyway.”

          Then the racist Democrats, (who were Democrats because the end of slavery damaged the economy of the south, and FDR’s policies did a lot to restore it), all became Republicans, the “Southern Strategy” was born and the South has been solidly Red ever since.

          Now, the party of Lincoln and the Union has become the party of Lincoln’s assassin and secession.

When did you lose your mind Sir?”… It might just be me, but I didn’t feel like OldLefty’s comment warranted such an insult….Especially when it came from (a jackass) someone that comes off like, they’re closer to God than everyone else… Your posts are so full of (not so hidden) hate… not to mention all of the ms-spelled words, and sentences that often made no sense at all… not to mention crap like THIS… “Shame on those folks. If KKK / Democrats hadn’t taken civil rights away
        in 1875 maybe no one like Wilson or anyone else would have hate in
        their heart. Amen” [sic] People like you, use Religion as a tool…a “cudgel” to bash others, that don’t think the way you do… Your hatred has to come out SOMEHOW, so you say things like.. “Shame on those folks. If KKK / Democrats hadn’t taken civil rights away in 1875” blah blahblah..That way you/re able to link the Democrats to the KKK and insulting them, all under the guise of “shame on them” I know I’m “off topic” here but I’m real sick of seeing your stupid posts!!! The way you mix Politics and Religion together to further your point makes me sick… Amen (right Sir?)

      “Two hundred fifty years of slavery. Ninety years of
      Jim Crow. Sixty years of separate but equal. Thirty-five years of racist
      housing policy.”
      Ta-Nehisi Coates

          I think YOU are the one who need the history lessons.

          The Civil Rights
          Act of 1964;

          Total Votes;

          The House ;

          Southern Democrats: 7–87
          (7–93%)

          Southern Republicans: 0–10 (0–100%)

          Northern Democrats: 145–9
          (94–6%)

          Northern Republicans: 138–24
          (85–15%)

          The Senate version:

          Southern Democrats: 1–20
          (5–95%)

          Southern Republicans: 0–1
          (0–100%)

          Northern Democrats: 45–1
          (98–2%)

          Northern Republicans: 27–5
          (84–16%)

          LBJ told Kennedy aide Ted Sorenson that “I know the risks are great and we might lose the South, but those sorts of states may be lost anyway.”

          Then the racist Democrats, (who were Democrats because the end of slavery damaged the economy of the south, and FDR’s policies did a lot to restore it), all became Republicans, the “Southern Strategy” was born and the South has been solidly Red ever since.

          Now, the party of Lincoln and the Union has become the party of Lincoln’s assassin and secession.

    Marianne always bring peaceful expression & thoughtfulness. Perhaps “cause & effect” lies deep within the collective willingness of our society to suffer enslavement as a whole. As long as we separate our ego dramas into us & them we will continue to be separated from one another. When All is One.
    In union their is strength.
