Substitute ‘Mexico’ For ‘Europe’ And Expect The Same Outcome
I’ve been watching Ric Burns’ documentary on New York City and came across the following quote about the Irish immigrants in the 19th Century:
All Europe is coming across the ocean, all that part at least that cannot make a living at home, and what should we do with them they increase our taxes, eat our bread, and encumber our streets and not one in 20 is competent to keep himself.

Too bad right-wingers don’t like history. It just doesn’t fit their delusional narrative.

While that claim is totally correct, let us not forget that people back then all came here with the permission of the U.S. government and everyone was subject to medical examinations to determine eligibility for entry. And none of them came here and went directly on the government dole, or did we get subjected to having their languages thrust upon us. Assimilation was the order of the day, not balkanization.

Not everybody arrived here willingly. African-Americans and Native Americans were forced to learn English. When the first Europeans arrived, there was no government as we know it. As far as a medical check up, the would be slaves were thrown overboard.
The Latinos were on the continent of North America long before the Europeans arrived. As for going directly on the dole, what benefits do you receive from the government? Loans or Pell Grants for school? Do you own a home? What benefits do you receive for owning that home? What about your car? Do you have children? How much did you save by being a parent, as oppose to not having children.
Are you a war veteran?Did you use the GI bill to go go school? Do you qualify for Medicare? Unless you have spent your whole life never receiving assistance from Uncle Sam, you are in no position to attack anybody who you think may be on the dole, but cannot prove it.
Many of these immigrants already have family here and do not need government assistance. I am going to assume you are of European ancestry. Even if your ancestry arrived here 100, 200, or 300 years ago, they received some sort of assistance. A church, a soup kitchen, they received assistance. In my state they had settlement houses. The new immigrants were housed, given clothes to wear, food to eat, and sn education. Some arrived not speaking English, but mostly Celtic or Gaelic languages, with some immigrants from Germany.
So please don’t stand there on your high horse acting as if you have never received government assistance, subsidies in your whole life, because you’re lying. We all have at some time or another. Even wealthy people receive government handouts. So quit believing in your fantasy of who you think receives government help and join the rest of us in the real world.
