President Obama: ‘No Excuse’ For ‘Excessive Force’ By Police In Ferguson

As tensions between police and residents of Ferguson, Missouri continue to roil in the wake of the police killing of unarmed teenager Mike Brown, and the police’s martial response to its aftermath, President Obama delivered a statement from Martha’s Vineyard Thursday afternoon denouncing the “excessive force” by police against peaceful protesters, and the harassment and arrest of journalists.

Following an update on the situation in Iraq, where the siege of Mount Sinjar has ended, the President devoted the bulk of his statement to events in Ferguson. He said that he has been receiving updates from Attorney General Eric Holder, and promised a thorough, independent investigation. President Obama also said he had spoken with Governor Jay Nixon (D-MO), and expressed “concern over the violent turn events have taken on the ground, and underscored now is the time for all of us to reflect on what has happened and find a way to come together going forward.”

The President also spoke movingly about Michael Brown, saying “It is important to remember how this started. We lost a young man, Michael Brown, in a heartbreaking and tragic circumstance. He was 18 years old. His family will never hold Michael in their arms again.”

President Obama then turned to the police response, adding that “when something like this happens, the local authorities, including police, have the responsibility to be open and transparent about how they are investigating the death, and how they are protecting people in their communities.”

In case there was any doubt which “violent turn” he was talking about, the President went on to say that while “there is never an excuse for violence against police, or those who would use the tragedy as a cover for vandalism or looting,” he added that “there is also no excuse for police to use excessive force against peaceful protesters, or to throw protesters in jail for lawfully exercising their First Amendment rights.”

“Here in the United States of America,” Obama continued, “police should not be bullying or arresting journalists just trying to do their jobs and report to the American people what they are seeing on the ground. Put simply, we all need to hold ourselves to a high standard, particularly those of us positions in authority.”

While not as strongly put as some would like…READ MORE

A.G. Holder’s DOJ investigation has irrefutable evidence of criminal abuses in Ferguson, Mo. or POTUS Obama would not hsve accurately delivered these accusations of “excessive force against peaceful protesters, or to throw protesters (and two reporters) in jail for lawfully exercising their First Amendment rights.”

Thankfully Governor Jay Nixon (D-MO) now has the upper hand in command and control of as peaceful a resolution as is possible under these tragedies.

Constitutional scholar, legal professor and POTUS Barack Obama J.D. doesn’t make accusatory statements ‘off the cuff’ without preemptively knowing the body of evidence.

        • John Tarter August 14th, 2014 at 18:18

Surely you jest with your description of the POTUS as a constitutional scholar. If he is as you claim, then he certainly knows how he is running roughshod over that.great document.

          • Dwendt44 August 14th, 2014 at 18:20

How so? Can’t think of anything he’s done that hasn’t been common practice or occurrence for many years.

          • natilie August 14th, 2014 at 18:48

It is not a claim. It is a fact. That is what Obama is. He’s a constitutional law professor and civil rights attorney.

            • John Tarter August 14th, 2014 at 20:30

And a poor one at that.

              • natilie August 14th, 2014 at 20:48

What you want him to be and what he is are 2 different things.

              • majii August 14th, 2014 at 22:15

It’s past the time for people like you to put up or shut up. Please provide evidence that President Obama wasn’t a constitutional law professor before he became a U.S. Senator, and please, please, please, provide evidence that he was a “poor one at that.”

Now, you may disagree with someone on the issues, but it’s not a good idea to make specious claims about them because your beliefs differ from theirs. If the alleged victim chooses to seek relief by taking the claim to court, the defendant (you) might not like the outcome, if the court rules in the plaintiff’s favor and finds the defendant is indeed guilty of slander/libel.

It’s also bad form, imo, to deny anyone his/her accomplishments based on superficial reasons. You didn’t attend law school with Barack Obama, and you weren’t one of his law school students. All you have is your dislike of him, and for you, that’s enough of a reason for you to talk sh*t about him while having no evidence to support your claim(s.) I would probably win the prize on Jeopardy hands down if the clue were, between the two of you, who’s the better-educated, you or the president?

What worries you most? Is it that he’s an accomplished POC? is wealthier than you and you think that should never happen in your America? he’s a democrat? he’s too tall? too short? he has a stable marriage? has kids that don’t get in trouble? has come to your house and personally taken every gun you have? He’s stopped you from going wherever you want to go and doing whatever you damn well please?

Or, are you pissed because he doesn’t rollover and allow the GOPTPers in Congress to have their way?

If this is the reason, you don’t understand how democratic forms of government work, but I think you have a pretty good understanding of how fascist governments operate.

          • Obewon August 14th, 2014 at 21:05

Surely you jest! As proven by court jester Darrell Issa’s 50 weeks of hearings per year delivering exactly “0 indictments”(☯‿☯)

“He’s damaged goods that is why they had to replace him as chairman”-Leader Pelosi preempts the 4 GOP Benghazi bodies final rulings, each concluding the same as the I.G. report “No stand down order” and ‘no wrongdoing by the White House.’ Vs Rusty the always wrong racist and his Marionette puppets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYQUKE-SLuI

            “that great document”

YOU should talk about the Constitution. Just yesterday you talked about closing the Southern border to keep Muslims (!) from practicing their religion in the US. You’re so ignorant, you probably think Muslims come from Latin America,

YOU hate America so much that just this morning you declared that you’re “not that aggrieved” about 4000+ US troops who were needlessly killed in Dubya’s unnecessary war of choice in Iraq.

            You make me sick.

Hey genius, in Missouri there is a law that says one must show an I D to an LEO if asked to produce one. They were asked and they ddn’t comply so they were lawfully arrested. Their occupation as journalists does not excuse them from obeying the law.

I get the police are going about this the wrong way, but, It would have been helpful for Obama to suggest to the citizens that they should not loot, rob, or burn down businesses. They should also stop throwing things at the police. Throwing a bottle at someone holding a gun is generally not a smart move. Especially when that person holding a gun has a badge. Then you’re opening yourself up to being shot. Plain and simple. If I were on that police force, I would simply resign and move away. The police there will NEVER again have any kind of control of that community…. Focus on the justice for Michael Brown and not the folks running of the fuel of Sharpton and company.

    • majii August 14th, 2014 at 21:54

President Obama doesn’t do himself any favors by sharing his opinion. Didn’t he learn anything from the Cambridge Police case? He said mostly the right things, but left enough of an impression that he was putting most of the blame on the police.

It’s either a lack of human decency, or a sad case of ignorant gullibility. You decide.

What was indecent? I questioned the president speaking before all the facts are known when it makes him looked uninformed; like he was with the Cambridge police incident

How were right wingers involved, this sound bite came from a German source I was told.

Right-wingers are always willing to believe bull$hit quotes from dubious sources, as long as it supports their irrational hatred of the first African-American President.

It’s either a lack of human decency, or a sad case of ignorant gullibility. You decide.

That’s right! And for once I agree with the President. And it is time that we de-militarize the police forces around this country like the one we are seeing here in Ferguson, Missouri. Why do they need mine resistant military vehicles and police officers dressed in military fatigues? This type of thing is giving those policemen a different mindset, as if they are now warriors instead of peace officers. Every citizen should be questioning what is happening here with the militarization of the nation’s police.

The rioters in this community should be condemned! The facts aren’t even out yet. Further, when was the last time a black person shot and killed a white person and the white people went to the street to riot and loot. Everyone of them should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
