Video Emerges Of Rand Paul Blasting ‘Cranks and Hacks’ At MSNBC
Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) threw a hissy fit on MSNBC’s The Cycle Wednesday afternoon over coverage of his 2010 remarks about the Civil Rights Act, and the inflammation was still raging hours later when he spoke to a group of young libertarians about how the “cranks and hacks” at MSNBC just totally ruined his day.
It all started with Ari Melber interviewing Paul and Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) about their criminal justice bill The REDEEM Act, which, among other things, seeks to restore certain rights to felons. Melber used that as a peg to ask Paul about his 2010 remarks, in which he expressed reservations about the forced desegregation of private businesses that serve the public, and what made him change his mind.
Paul responded by essentially recasting his remarks, not as an objection to the public accommodation provisions of the Civil Rights Act, but as a mere “philosophical discussion,” repeatedly assuring Melber, “I have never been against the Civil Rights Act,” and demanding that MSNBC broadcast “24 hour news telling the truth” in exchange for a discussion of his views on private businesses, all while The Cycle’s producers showed graphics of Paul’s direct quotes on the matter.
Now, Paul is correct that he took a lot of flak from MSNBC over that interview, but I’ve watched an awful lot of MSNBC programming on the subject, and aside from the opinions and conclusions of its guests and host, which are subjective, their reporting and characterization of Paul’s remarks has been accurate and fair, and in Melber’s case, even generous.
In that May, 2010 interview, Maddow gave Paul myriad opportunities to say whether or not he thought segregated lunch counters should be illegal, and/or to say that he would have voted for the Civil Rights Act despite his lone philosophical objection, and he declined. Whether this makes Paul a “horrible racist,” as he puts it, is a matter of opinion, one I have never heard expressed on MSNBC, but it is accurate to say that, in this interview, Rand Paul expressed opposition to provisions of the Civil Rights Act, and a reluctance to vote for it as it was passed.
A few hours later, Paul was speaking to the Young Americans for Liberty conference in Arlington when his butthurt flared up again. “So, I was having a great day today, and then I went to MSNBC,” Paul moped, and launched into a tirade that included some name-calling, but also seemed to acknowledge the very point that Melber had been asking him about. he will explode somewhere along the campaign trail…
let’s watch!

We don’t need someone who acts like a petulant child to be president. The more he opens his mouth and the more criticism he gets the worse he looks. His mouth and his attitude will doom him before the primaries.

How much funnier can it be than Cheney directing foreign wars for Halliburton profits?
You already know the ‘mission accomplished’ punch line before the endless occupational liberation begins!
But – true to comedian form – he ups and does it anyway.

I hate Rand Paul with the burning fire of a thousand suns (and he is, unfortunately, one of my Senators; along with Mitch the Obstructionist McConnell). But what you said about the ophthalmology thing is not… quite… accurate. He had objections to some of the rules of the existing governing body, so he essentially picked up his proverbial ball and went home. (These rules, as I recall, were pretty reasonable and certainly not worthy of the tantrum he threw.)
He DID start another review board with a slightly different name, put members of his family in key administrative positions, and proceeded to poach a tiny fraction of the registrants of the other (IMO more legitimate) body.
But let’s not start spreading the untrue rumor that he “couldn’t pass the ophthalmology board.” He passed the existing board just fine, then disagreed with the way they operated, so he created his own board. The truth, as it stands, is damning enough. We don’t need to make shit up. That’s the kind of grain-of-truth innuendo and sloppy reporting we nail wingnuts like Beck & Hannity for.

OH, and I didn’t say “couldn’t” I said “didn’t”
Paul August 1st, 2014 at 19:27
“didn’t” is also incorrect.
He did. Then he left. THAT is why he is “not registered” with the American Board of Ophthalmology. He renounced or let his membership lapse when he started his own organization.
Is this really worth arguing about? He’s still an ass. He’s still certified with an agency that he created and (until recently) was president of. That’s pretty shady, isn’t it? Is it necessary to lie and say he “didn’t” (OR “couldn’t”) pass the ABO’s certification?
Mainah August 1st, 2014 at 19:49
I’m not arguing but if you’re going to accuse me of saying he couldn’t pass it when I didn’t, I have a right to respond. After all, being likened to Beck … not going to sit for it. I am not lying. So, yeah, that’s an argument in my book. Just because he says that’s the way it went doesn’t mean I’m going to believe him either, now am I?
Paul August 2nd, 2014 at 14:33
“Just because he says that’s the way it went doesn’t mean I’m going to believe him either, now am I?”
More weak-ass innuendo. Rand was a practicing ophthalmologist in Kentucky long before the whole kerfuffle with the ABO. That means he passed, and I’m quite certain there is documentation to that effect somewhere in their records.
I cannot BELIEVE I am defending Rand Paul here, but you are engaging in the exact same kind of rhetorical games that I’m sure you would not tolerate from someone on the right. I know I wouldn’t.
Mainah August 2nd, 2014 at 15:00

Rand Paul has been going on a ‘tour’ to appeal to Black Americans. I wish someone would tell him he’s wasting his time. Few of us will ever vote for him because we recognize wolves in sheep’s clothing when we see them. He can backtrack, lie, and do anything else he chooses in his attempt to make himself appear to believe in equality for all, but the stench of racism and bigotry clings to him like the scent of a skunk on one who has been sprayed by one. Leopards don’t change their spots. It’s an insult to POC, LGBTQ Americans, and the others RP considers not equal to him for him to try telling us that he sees us as his equals. As long as he doesn’t act on his newly revised positions, he’s toast when it comes to getting these groups to vote for him, if he runs for POTUS. Oh, and please, would someone on his staff tell him that his whining is off-putting?
