U.S. Economy Beats Expectations

The economy grew at 4% in the second quarter of 2014, exceeding expectations.

In its initial estimate for the second quarter, the government cited major gains in inventories for private businesses as well as exports and personal consumption spending that added to the growth. Economists, who had been hoping for a full reversal of the first quarter’s decline, were thrilled with the second quarter’s numbers. The consensus forecast for G.D.P. was 3 percent.

“Fantastic,” Douglas Handler, chief United States economist for IHS Global Insight Analysis, said of the second-quarter G.D.P. increase, which further cemented views that the decrease in America’s overall output during the first quarter was most likely a fluke tied in large part to unusually stormy winter weather and other anomalies. Any dip in gross domestic product outside an official recession is considered rare.

“The economy grew at 4% in the first quarter of 2014, exceeding expectations.”

Is this supposed to say second quarter or was the first quarter revised again?

The company I work for released their 2nd quarter report this morning. Revenue increased 12% and the operating profit grew 29% over last year. They did so well, they’ve increased their end of the year projections.

My compan also had a great second quarter! Only thing that screwed in Q1 were the snowstorms.

The numbers for the first quarter are completely believable, as they show a decline.

The numbers for the second quarter were probably cooked by the White House.

Good news for America is always bad news for repubs. U.S. Record $16.2 trillion GDP grew +4% in Q2. “The consensus forecast for G.D.P. was +3%.”-average annual growth. August, 2014’s 54 consecutive months of private jobs expansion ties the Clinton record. Forward!

Don’t get me wrong, I like drugs as much as the next dirty hippie, but the piggy bank seems to be sitting on a bed of brightly colored prescription medications.

Am I hallucinating (again!), or is this somehow tied into the story?

Interest rates for loans & credit cards? Consumer prices? Housing? Insurance premiums?
Glad for the good news but it seems that unless there is a containment or stabilization of constant increases in consumer expenses the most important measure (standard of living) still sucks for most people.

I suspect this improvement will be short lived unless multi corps decide they love Americans more than perpetuating their empires.
Oh, I forgot, they think America is “exceptional.”
Is this newspeak for, we take our $ everywhere except America (to avoid paying taxes?)
Yup, that’s exceptionalism. Wait til Monsanto figures out that they can make even more money growing pot… or did I miss that they already have?

Switched to Yo Yo Ma…even sadder. Gotta go to You Tube & find someway to meditate I know you’ll understand.

Not sure if this is relevant but I listen to Perlman play Swan Lake, OP: as I write.
