Pastor Robert Jeffress: Gay Marriages Are ‘Counterfeit’

Posted by | July 29, 2014 06:54 | Filed under: Politics Radio Interviews Top Stories

Pastor Robert Jeffress of Dallas’s First Baptist Church appeared on radio with me Monday night, and callers brought up the issue of gay marriage. Jeffress referred to such relationships as “counterfeit.” He said gay marriage “devalues the institution of marriage.”

COLMES: “But how does it devalue the institution of marriage? Why would straights not get married?”
JEFFRESS: “Because if marriage is whatever you define it to be, why bother to get married at all? Anytime you counterfeit something, you cheapen the value of the real thing.”
COLMES: “Wait, gay marriage is counterfeit?”
JEFFRESS: “Yeah, it’s counterfeit.”
COLMES: “Really?”
JEFFRESS: “Absolutely”
COLMES: “That’s pretty insulting to gays who love the person and want the same rights. You’re calling their relationships, which are legal now in many states, counterfeit?”
JEFFRESS: “Yeah, it’s counterfeit according to God’s word, I do believe the Bible, I do believe in God, God’s the one who created marriage.”…
COLMES: “I think that calling it counterfeit is quite, it sounds cruel, so say that a marriage is counterfeit between two people that love each other.”
JEFFRESS: “It’s sounds politically incorrect. Five years ago it would have not sounded that way.”
COLMES: “Well, the world is changing. I would say for the better.”
JEFFRESS: “I would say for the worse, and I would agree with you that it’s changing.”

You have a great deal of patience, Alan, I applaud you. I wouldn’t have been able to keep my mouth shut once his bigotry started frothing out. His religion stinks if he thinks his god makes rules of love exclusive to only those who believe in him, though he supposedly created them in his image. Fortunately for me, I can rationalize that it is man’s interpretation of what belief systems they create that prevent equality form coming about.

I would love for one of these live interviewers to tell and then ask someone like Jeffress the following.

Many Christian denominations do not see homosexuality as being a sin, and they are performing same sex marriages in their churches. Also, there are all the other religions being practiced in the USA, a number of which have no problem with same sex marriage and homosexuality. And, of course, there are always the atheists, agnostics, and others who do not follow any religious tradition. If a same sex couple does not believe that homosexuality is a sin, and that there is nothing wrong with same sex marriage, then why should your beliefs and your opinions on the matter deny them their the right to a perfectly legal marriage?

If he answers by referencing his own religious beliefs or his deity in any way, point out that we are a secular nation and that nobody is bound by his beliefs except him.

Then the interviewer will need to keep the person on topic because you KNOW that he will try to weasel his way out of answering the question.

Jeffress can keep his god out of the marriage business. The state requires a license, tax brackets are altered by it and pensions and survivor benefits apply. If you want your marriage sanctioned by your churches god – go for it, but it can be a secondary consideration.

Your god created polygamy or did you just skip that chapter?

I don’t know how Alan doesn’t have a huge bruise on his forehead from repeatedly hitting it on his desk.

    • tiredoftea July 29th, 2014 at 11:56

It would happen a lot less if he stopped having idiots like this on the air. Oh, wait, he works for Fraud Spews so there’s not much chance of a steady stream of reality based talkers getting booked, is there.

Working at fox would be a lot like poking yourself in the eye. Repeatedly.

The world is changing and has always been changing, something that scares the living poop out of the simple minded.

This guy just admitted that things change and yet I wonder if he believes in evolution?

The nice thing about science is that it works whether they believe in it or not. They don’t know how lucky they are.

Fucking idiot. Straight couples will continue to get married for the same reason they do now, and for the same reason that gay people want to get married. It’s a legal issue–not a religious one. Married straight couples have some 1,000 or so legal rights and privileges that an unmarried couple do not. It’s really a simple concept–get a legal marriage with the State, and then if you want to have a church or other wedding/marriage ceremony, then DO IT. Nothing is getting in your way–no one else’s legal marriage is interfering with yours at all. I think what they are REALLY mad about is that they no longer feel extra-special.

    • Larry Schmitt July 29th, 2014 at 11:44

No, what they are really mad about is they want to keep the icky gay people from being able to enjoy the same rights as they do. I mean, do you have any idea what they do with each other at night? With the lights off? And the door closed?

      • Barry S G July 29th, 2014 at 18:28

I have a good idea what they do with each other at night, the same things that are happening in the homes of straight people with the exception of penile-vaginal intercourse. Some people have blinders on so that they only see male-female intercourse, missionary position, with the male on top, everything else is an abomination.
The truth is that sexual practices are not reserved for gay folk. Every practice of gays and lesbians are done by straight couples, even the “kinky” ones.

        • Larry Schmitt July 29th, 2014 at 19:42

Yes, that was my point. Your sarc detector broken?

          • Barry S G July 30th, 2014 at 14:19

No, I was just expanding on your comment. As far as sex goes, there is nothing new under the sun.

            • Larry Schmitt July 30th, 2014 at 14:58

              Please accept my apology then.

Gay people deserve to be happy or sad like the rest of us if God is indeed all powerful let God strike the offenders not this bigoted faux Christian.

Marriage was around long before the ancient Hebrews started copying the beliefs of other older religions.

Keep talking, Jeffries. You’re a great example of why the GOPTP will have problems getting the votes of certain Americans for quite some time. LGBTQ Americans have family members and friends, some of them republicans, who love them and will remember your words when it’s time to vote.
