Men Shouldn’t Hit Women, But Not For the Reason Mika Brzezinski Thinks
While Whoopi’s comments are the ones getting all the attention, Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski said something very similar Tuesday morning.
Brzezinski explained how Stephen A. Smith’s remarks received an “incredibly huge, terrible reaction” that “completely outweighs exactly what he said,” and that Smith was “trying to to have a constructive conversation.”
“But the bottom line is, unfortunately, there is an unequivocal truth. Men cannot hit women, they may not in any circumstances. And within that, it is hard to have an honest conversation. But I do think that what Whoopi was saying had value, too.”
The entire panel, with the possible exception of Willie Geist, missed the point for the same reason that Stephen A. Smith did. It is absurd to say that a man can never hit a woman under any circumstances…READ MORE

It is not right for any person to hit anybody. All to sadly though it is a man who is hitting a woman. Although I have witnessed women hitting their spouses as well as acting in a violent manner (Throwing objects). Although when one is acting in Self defense, Whether you are man or woman, if you are committing a violent act towards another person, one must expect retaliation.

A man hitting a woman is a lose/lose game anyway.
If you hurt her, its, “Dude! That was a woman!!”
If she hurts you, it’s “Dude! That was a woman!! Snicker!”

I can honestly say, that I have had two scenario’s that I have hit a woman. One was in complete self defense. The other was with my previous wife. And that was because she was hitting me first.
Otherwise, I have learned to walk away from confrontation and let cooler heads prevail.

Agreed. People seem to forget that humans are mammals. How do other mammals react when provoked? Evolution has programmed us to instinctively react to certain stimuli in certain ways. It is unrealistic to think that every person will be totally in control of their instincts at all times. There have been times when it took every ounce of self control I could muster to NOT hit someone who was getting in my face. When you get in someone’s face, you are triggering powerful instincts that have been put there by evolution. Everyone knows that a nice, gentle dog can be provoked into growling and biting if he is being tormented. Humans share some of that same evolutional programming. Everyone has a breaking point where they lose control and emotions take over. That’s why you advice of “walking away” is so important. The best way to avoid problems is to avoid putting yourself in situations where you might lose control.

Call me a hopeless liberal but I grew up being told it was never ok to hit anyone, Men, woman, dogs, internet trolls, freeway overpass protesters, it didn’t matter violence was never an acceptable alternative and self defense was not considered an invitation for retaliation but an unfortunate by product of the attempt to extract yourself from violent circumstances.

I’m with you on this as I was taught the same and have taught my children the same. One chooses to be violent or to be a pacifist or something in between the two extremes, just like one chooses to be an asshole or to be a decent human being. How one lives their life is a series of choices, each one we are responsible for in and by ourselves.

I have to agree with Whoppi, respect me and I will respect you.
Dwendt44 July 29th, 2014 at 16:59
I also agree with Whoppi. Trouble is, some women are very adept at provoking a physical response with words comments yelling, etc.
I wonder sometimes why any one would team up with a woman with a mouth like some I’ve seen; it’s almost asking for it.

A friend was a victim of spousal abuse, he would show up with a black eyes, cuts & abrasions with unbelievable excuses. Looking back, I’m ashamed of my unsympathetic reaction to his problem, even as far as mocking his manhood. Physical abuse is abhorrent. Regardless of gender, under no circumstances should abuse be tolerated.

I try to not hit women, most of the time, but I feel there are times when it’s just something that needs to be done. Those times are in kickboxing class mostly.

What Smith said is taken completely out of context which was totally against violent attacks against women. Smith was raised in an all women family with no father.Smith was coming out against what Ray Rice did.
Here’s the actual clip of what he said.
