ISIS Destroys Jonah’s Tomb In Mosul, Iraq

ISIS continues its destruction of holy sites, this time bombing what is believed to be the burial site of  the prophet Jonah, who Christians believe was swallowed by a whale.

Civil defense officials in Mosul, Iraq, told CNN that ISIS operatives planted explosives around the mosque containing the tomb then detonated it remotely on Thursday.

A video posted to YouTube, the authenticity of which has not yet been confirmed, shows the destruction of the Sunni Mosque of the Prophet Younis, which is the Arabic name for Jonah. Though ISIS claims to adhere to the Sunni branch of Islam, they have nonetheless targeted multiple Sunni shrines, blowing up or bulldozing any place they deem “unIslamic.”

According to The Guardian, people living nearby the mosque told AP that ISIS members had declared that the holy site “had become a place for apostasy, not prayer.” The Imam Aoun Bin al-Hassan mosque was also destroyed on Thursday.

Destroying artifacts of human history should be considered a crime against all humanity. When a people or culture seek to destroy history and its relics, they themselves need to be relegated to the dustbins of history. I have almost no compassion for people that can commit crimes like this.

It reminds me of the Taliban destroying the ancient statues of Buddha in Afghanistan and the destruction of the library at Alexandria.

?? Why would you say that? These were huge rock carvings in a rock face. They were thousands of years old. Just because they mean nothing to you, doesn’t mean it was ok to destroy them. Others gave them value.

          No, it’s not.

Sorry I posted above before I saw your comment.
Destroying things other people value seems to be a trait – a way of personalizing political differences.
If the Library of Alexandria wasn’t already destroyed, it would be now as a way of stopping knowledge. Knowledge is power and politicians are afraid of people who use knowledge in ways they don’t approve of. It’s why they are dumbing down our children.

Nothing to be sorry about. And you are spot on. Rape is another common tool–kill the men and rape “their” women, forcing them to have their enemies’ children. I often daydream about what the world would be like today if we had never seen religions rear their ugly heads. We can’t make any progress because these superstitious and willfully ignorant fools are dragging us backwards.

Its only a crime if its in the law books in Iraq . 10 yrs isn’t enough for maliki to get his poop in a group but We on the other hand have to produce miracles

I remember when the Taliban blew up the Buddhas of Bamiyan. They were carved into a rock face and had stood for years as historical relics. And they were beautiful.
I totally agree with your feelings about destroying history and historical monuments just to hurt other people.

that’s jonah’s tomb like the mountain with a wooden ark – it may be old but it;s just old – folks have been building and tearing down to rebuild for 1000’s of years – pile of stone which will become a parking lot when peace prevails.

One missile to the Temple on the Mount, and this whole fight could get over in a week.
