GOP Rep. Idiotically Mistakes Senior U.S. Officials For Indian Citizens
…when he saw senior U.S. officials Nisha Biswal and Arun Kumar at a Foreign Affairs committee meeting yesterday, he did what any Tea Party Floridian would do — he assumed they were members of the Indian government.
Instead of paying attention when the two were introduced (Biswal works for the State Department and Kumar works in Commerce), or checking the cheat sheet on his table which listed everyone in the meeting, he just told them, “I love your country.”
John Hudson at Foreign Policy reports that Clawson referred to Biswal and Kumar as members of the Indian government throughout the entire meeting. No one corrected him. Hudson recorded the many things Clawson said to try to win their favor:
“I’m familiar with your country; I love your country. Anything I can do to make the relationship with India better, I’m willing and enthusiastic about doing so.”
“Just as your capital is welcome here to produce good-paying jobs in the U.S., I’d like our capital to be welcome [in India]. I ask cooperation and commitment and priority from yourgovernment in so doing. Can I have that?”

I suppose in the overall scheme of things, Rep. Clawson can be considered a sign of progress for this district,
The special election which he won was held to fill the seat vacated when the previous representative of the 19th district in Florida resigned while pleading guilty to cocaine possession.
Bottom line though, low information voters elect low information politicians.

we have common ground. I live in one of the rare California (04) districts represented in Congress by a Republican, Tom McClintock. He is one of the less outspoken members of the GOP caucus but he does vote in lockstep with the leadership.
I used to live in CA-11 which was a long time GOP district. But over the years, demographics changed. CA-11 is only about an hour from San Francisco and we hippy leftists grew older, earned more money, moved to the suburbs and not even then-VP Cheney could save the bacon of the GOP incumbent Richard Pombo.
When that happened, as the Lone Ranger used to say, my work is done here, time to move on. Flipping CA-04 will be more difficult as we are over 3 hours away from San Francisco, but we are working on it.

I thought it might be old age, but he’s only 54.
He needs to lay off the bottle or the pills.
Better yet, he needs to visit the Wizard…maybe he can help him out like he did the Scare Crow.

He said “I ask cooperation and commitment and priority from your government”…maybe he did realize he was talking to US officials.

if so, then he was still misguided.
he should have addressed the request to the leadership of his own caucus
tiredoftea July 25th, 2014 at 20:06
Maybe he thought it was Boehner?
ecotoper July 26th, 2014 at 22:18
Boehner is ORANGE, not brown … he would assume Boehner was a Klingon, and would offer to offer trade relations with his planet …
tiredoftea July 26th, 2014 at 22:23
Historically correct. But, he has found a new tanning method and is looking less orange. Besides, Rep. Clawson wasn’t looking too closely anyway.
