David Purdue Wins GOP Senate Primary Runoff in Georgia

Business mogul David Purdue is the Republican nominee for Georgia’s seat in the United State’s Senate. He will be facing Democrat Michelle Nunn and Libertarian Amanda Swafford in a bid to replace retiring GOP Senator Saxby Chambliss in November.

Purdue, the former CEO of Reebok, Dollar General and (the now defunct) Pillowtex, narrowly defeated 11-term Representative Jack Kingston last night in Georgia’s GOP Senate nomination runoff. He is running on his private sector experience and as a Washington outsider. However, he was the GOP establishment’s choice for the nomination because he was seen as being less likely to make inflammatory remarks that might cause an electoral backlash.

The race may decide which party controls the Senate for the last two years of President Obama’s tenure in office. Republicans need to pick up six seats to control the chamber. Polls currently show the GOP contender leading by double-digit percentages in Democratically held seats in South Dakota, West Virginia and Montana.

The Democrats are also defending seats in Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Michigan and North Carolina. If the GOP can pick up just half of those seats control of the Senate may come down Democrats picking up seats in either Georgia or Kentucky, where Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes‎ is in a tight race with current Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

So now Republican’s are choosing/backing their candidates by their ability not to stick their foot in their mouths. I guess they may have learned a lesson or two.

Well, the more republicans talk, the more they damage themselves. Their platform is a disaster, how can you say anything without it being a disaster? The person that says the least will be the one getting the votes in the GOP.

With the convoluted rules of the senate, to be in control a party actually needs 60 senators since a simple majority rarely wins a vote anymore. And don’t forget that Obama has the power of the veto which takes 2/3 of both houses to override.

As a Georgia resident, I will be backing Ms. Nunn.

She was ahead 8 points in the flash poll I saw earlier today but Purdue has a huge war chest to spend.

Doesn’t matter. Eric Can’tor had a huge war chest and still lost, because he didn’t get enough votes. Money doesn’t determine who wins, votes do.

I watched the debate on CSPAN and it quickly became a laughable debate to determine which of the two were least corrupt.
