Captain America Is Black And Thor Is A Woman: Marvel Shakeup

Archie Comics is not the only place where culture and issues are driving change. WaPo‘s Soraya Nadia McDonald looks at a tectonic shift at iconic pop culture institution Marvel Comics:

Marvel already released one piece of world-shattering news this week (okay, comic-world shattering) and you think that’d be enough, but the comics behemoth wasn’t done with us, it seems. Not only is Thor going to be a woman, but starting in October, Captain America will be black.

It turns out current Captain America alter ego Steve Rogers has been stripped of his super-soldier serum and the folks at Marvel elected to promote from within, so Sam Wilson, alter-ego of another Marvel comic book hero, Falcon, will be the new Captain America.

And no, that does not make him Captain African America, as Stephen Colbert inquired Wednesday night as he interviewed Marvel chief creative officer Joe Quesada. …

These changes in the Marvel universe are no accident, but deliberate editorial decisions. As David Betancourt wrote for The Washington Post, Marvel has expressed a commitment when it comes to making the diversity of its characters reflect that of its readership:

Whether changes involve the biracial Ultimate Spider-Man, a half Latino Nova, the Muslim Ms. Marvel or the all-female X-Men team, Axel Alonso meant it when he assumed the editorship several years ago and said the pages of Marvel Comics would reflect the real world — that no matter who you are, no matter where you’re from or what your religion or sexuality is, everyone deserves to feel like they can be a superhero.

Brilliant tactical move. Shakeups in the comic world are big $$ to collectors. As for naysayers, there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

I understand Donald Trump has boots on the ground at Marvel looking for Captain Americas birth certificate. Boehner wants to sue him for making command decisions, and Thor is avoiding red states with forced trans vaginal requirements.

First Santa Claus, now Captain America?

We need Megyn Kelly to go on the air to reassure the children: “For all you kids watching at home, don’t worry, Captain America really IS white, not some darkie gangsta from the ‘hood…”

hehehe. I think marvel comics just want to give bigots and women haters a chance to hate more. let ’em, that’s what they do best. I can understand making captain marvel black, but not making thor female. thorette. perhaps? ooh, well.
