Moderate Republicans Endorse Democrat In Kansas Governor Race

A group of one hundred and four prominent members of the Kansas GOP pledged their support for Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Paul Davis in his bid to unseat Republican incumbent Governor Sam Brownback. The news is sending shock waves through traditionally conservative Kansas, a state President Obama lost by almost 22 percentage points in 2012.

Brownback gained the admiration of conservative pundits throughout the country after slashing the state’s income taxes by 25 percent but came under fire in recent months as shortfalls in revenue began to squeeze essential public services and resulted in huge deficits.

Republicans for Kansas Values, group of current and former GOP legislators which includes two former lieutenant governors, the current state insurance commissioner, and many former members of the state legislature, has risen to oppose Brownback and took the drastic step of endorsing his Democratic rival in the upcoming election.

A press release on Tuesday stated:

“Brownback’s reckless tax ‘experiment’ resulted in (1) deficit spending, (2) increased debt, and (3) reduced credit rating.”

Brownback earned the ire of Kansas GOP moderates in 2012 when he conducted a primary purge of his party, endorsing tea party backed challengers funded by groups like Americans for Prosperity. Eight moderate Republican Senators were turned out in that purge. Seven of them have endorsed Davis.

The endorsements come as polls show the race in a toss up or slightly favoring the Democrat. While Davis was once seen as a long shot to unseat the incumbent, a recent SurveyUSA poll shows him leading Brownback by 6 percentage points.

Kansas has elected Democrats as governor in the recent past. Kathleen Sebelius, who later went on to be Obama’s Secretary of Health and Human Services, served as the state’s Governor from 2003 to 2009.

It is rather gratifying in these partisan times.

I’d like to see a moderate group of Republicans come out against ALEC.

Actually, I like that they are the woman hating, bigots that they are, as this could mean a Democrat majority in the House and Senate. It could happen, if they fail in another favorite pastime, Voter Suppression.

It does have a bit of “reap what you sow” karma thing going for it.

Although I’m not a KS resident, I’m in Kansas City so Brownback’s idiocy definitely has fallout that directly effects me. I dislike him with a red-hot intensity that knows no bounds. Much like the way Anomaly feels about McConnell.

Brownback has very few friends in the area at the moment although I heard Rick Santorum endorsed him yesterday.

          • tiredoftea July 16th, 2014 at 13:09

Well, if anyone deserves a “Santorum”, it’s Brownback.

          • Judgeforyourself37 July 16th, 2014 at 14:06

Santorum’s endorsement is the “kiss of death,” for an intelligent person of voting age.

I believe I read Gov Nixon vetoed legislation like this but the crazy MO lege overrode it. If so, you may be in for a direct hit.

          • Carla Akins July 17th, 2014 at 10:02

Yep and yep. At least the override looks likely. Last year it was an everyone needs an assault weapon – that override failed by a single vote. I don’t think this one will survive.

That already appears to be happening, for purity reasons in the GOP. They basically are eating their own.

Like the bumper sticker says– If you want to live like a Republican, vote for the Democrat. A quick look at history shows that economically, the GOP trashes the economy, then the Democrats have to fix it, all the being gnawed on by the yappy little GOP attack dogs. Trickle-down never worked and never will. In fact, it almost put us into the Second Great Depression. The geniuses on the right still haven’t figured out that when people are poor, they can’t buy anything.

This is what fraying at the edges looks like, boys and girls. Davis, by any other measure should be a moderate Republican, but this being Kansas, he’s still closer to the political center than the Republicans endorsing him. At this point, we’ll take what we can get to bring the ragged edge in a little bit.

I have been following this interesting saga for a few months. In the first story I read, as usual, the comments are far more entertaining than the actual news report. The people attempting to defend Gov. Brownback said essentially that the problems afflicting Kansas were due to the poor national economy caused by, yes you guessed it, President Obama.

Some of these people will never let go of their fairy tale that all you have to do is cut taxes, let corporations do whatever the hell they want, and America will be paradise. Not even when overwhelming evidence to the contrary kicks them in the a$$.

It is the mindset we see in so many on the political right and in the “party of personal responsibility”. In those rare instances where their ideas work, it is proof of the supremacy of conservatism. When their ideas fail, it is the fault of liberals, especially the current President.

Conversely when leftist ideas are shown to work, somehow those ideas become conservative principles. Remember, when Sarah Palin raised taxes on oil companies to increase the amount of free money sent out to every Alaskan by $1200 per person including toddlers age 1 and up, it was not socialism. It was a courageous blow against corrupt cronyism, whatever the heck that means…

“What the hell is happening in a country where you can’t count on the support of your party just because you’ve been wrong on every single policy decision you’ve ever made? Really, the fallout hasn’t even begun in earnest.”

    Signed,
Governor Sam Brownback (R, Dumphuqistan, er, Kansas)

Brownback is a theocrat. Not surprising that more democratic GOP powers would switch allegiance, but probably for all the wrong reasons.
