UN: Seized Iraq Nuclear Material Is No Risk

The Iraqi government appealed to the United Nations to step in when word came that terrorists had stolen nuclear material from the University of Mosul. The UN says there is no risk here.

International Atomic Energy Agency spokesman Gill Tudor [pictured] was responding to a letter from Iraq’s U.N. Ambassador Mohamed Ali Alhakim to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon informing him that “terrorist groups” took control of about 40 kilograms of uranium compounds at Mosul University which were used in scientific research…

Tudor said “the IAEA is aware of the notification from Iraq and is in contact to seek further details,” but she played down the threat.

“On the basis of the initial information we believe the material involved is low-grade and would not present a significant safety, security or nuclear proliferation risk,” Tudor said in a statement. “Nevertheless, any loss of regulatory control over nuclear and other radioactive materials is a cause for concern.”
