Racism In Norfolk, Nebraska? Nah!

Posted by | July 6, 2014 19:30 | Filed under: Contributors Dave Van Slyke News Behaving Badly Opinion Politics Top Stories

The good old boys of Norfolk, Nebraska had themselves a 4th of July celebration including a parade down main street. The most popular float featured a figure depicting President Obama dressed in overalls, standing in front of an outhouse. Signs indicated the outhouse was the Obama Presidential Library.

The crowd hooted and cheered wildly as the float passed by. Were these people racists? No! They’re just good American patriots having a little old-fashioned fun. Shucks, they didn’t mean no harm.

The Nebraska Democratic Party issued a statement, decrying the depiction as one of the “worst shows of racism and disrespect for the office of the Presidency that Nebraska has ever seen.”

The world is watching. These images are being seen by people in Canada, Europe and all over the world.

What must they think of us?

Ignorant hillbillies don’t realize how alone and isolated they are.
Fox, Rush and Hannity make them think they’re in the majority.

and you have polled every single citizen to come up with these numbers??
Just think, over in the Liberal uptopian state of California, the Police beat the krap out of black women on the interstates!

What, white cops aren’t RWNJs in blue states??

        • Ross Cassell July 6th, 2014 at 20:34

So you know the ideology of that CHiPs officer?? I only pin pointed the state, which is insanely blue.. Do you claim to know every single non-lefto? I thought if what against your liberalism to stereotype?

          • Tommy6860 July 6th, 2014 at 20:39

Well if I were to follow your logic on how blue Cali is, than the act of that idiot in Nebraska must mean how insanely racist that state is. A large white male police officer, pummeling on a black female that he easily could have subdued otherwise.

            • Ross Cassell July 6th, 2014 at 20:51

That doesn’t mean the officer is repub.. I most certainly agree that the idiot officer went 7000% too far, I hope he loses his job and faces criminal penalties (which doesn’t change the fact that the woman should get a citation for being on the interstate, a fine if you will) Now the guy who filmed this could have yelled, wonder if the knowledge of being filmed would have stopped the pummeling??

You think a lefty would act that way? It’s knuckle-dragging ignorant right-wingers who abuse their authority and resort to extreme violence when they can’t get their way. They are incapable of reasoning, so they brutally lash out, especially against women and minorities.

Not all lefties are sandal-wearing peaceniks, but at least they never act like mindless jack-booted fascists. That’s the right-wing way.

He sure does give the people of SE Asia as being the King of The United States of America though! Personally, I see nothing wrong with referring to this POTUS as His Royal Majesty or this First Lady as Her Royal Majesty – I mean, if you could see the way they so elegantly embark and disembark from the Presidential Flying Palace, you would understand why so many outside the western influence would think of them as Royalty.

I voted for Obama twice. I don’t consider him a God – just a good man doing his best. And so far, he’s a vast improvement over GW Bush who invaded Iraq for no reason, costing us 4,000 young American lives, tens of thousands wounded and 3 trillion dollars. And then leaving the country teetering on the edge of financial collapse.

No one said he is a God or walks on water. The float is a blatant act of racism. Any reasonable person would see it that way. The city of Norfolk had better start taking an active role in approving individual floats before they issue parade permits.

    Hillbillies in Nebraska????????????????
    Hillbillies in Norfolk???????????
I have been to the latter, no hills.. I am pretty sure Nebraska is flat as well.
Why is it that any and all criticism, over the top or not, of this President is called racism? If we have to endure a Hillary after this ass clown gets out of office, will all criticism of her be called sexism? Good grief, shake your heads and move on, the constitution has yet to be modified to require everyone to think like a liberal.

    • arc99 July 6th, 2014 at 20:10

You may not understand how or why a majority of African Americans would find such a depiction inherently racist.

All I ask is that when the question comes up as to why blacks vote Democratic 90% of the time, please keep in mind that it is not because we are on somebody’s plantation.

Personally I don’t give a sh*t whether you understand or not. But the bottom line is that most in our community want no part of a political party where both its leadership and its base make it quite clear they don’t give a f*ck about our values.

      • Ross Cassell July 6th, 2014 at 20:56

But that doesn’t mean the sentiment is racist, crikey that’s all I have heard from the left, any criticism of Obama is racist… While there are racists out there whom have said their crap, I assure you if Obama was purple he would have gotten criticized.. Name one POTUS that has not gotten criticized and I will give you beach front property in Nebraska. The door has been opened will all future Presidents of color be shielded from criticism with the “racism” word?

        • Abby Normal July 6th, 2014 at 21:23

That float is not criticism. It is pure, ignorant, shameful, racist mockery. The people who created it are not critics of the president’s policies but racists.

        • arc99 July 6th, 2014 at 21:40

this country has a long history of portraying anything and everything produced by black people related to intellectual pursuits as sub-standard and inferior. it is not a matter of shielding anyone from legitimate criticism, it is in fact a realistic understanding of what this country had been for the first 200 years of its existence.

time and time again I hear these denials that all of the criticism of President Obama has nothing whatsoever to do with race. but when I ask the simple question as to which caucasian President was harassed about a birth certificate, or accused of lying about his religious beliefs, there is no answer other than parroting ridiculous talking points about why those “controversies” were legitimate.

As I said, I do not care whether you understand the offense taken at the outhouse display or not. It certainly is no skin off my back or the 90% of African Americans who voted for the President twice. You just keep going.

With more constituents like you shaping the agenda and values of the GOP, the Democratic share of the black vote might hit 100% by 2024, and that’s fine with me.

        • arc99 July 6th, 2014 at 21:48

perhaps an analogy might help to clarify.

suppose in the not too distant future, we have our first Jewish President who is also a conservative Republican. In a decidedly liberal community like Berkley Ca or Cambridge, Mass there is a holiday parade that includes a float allegedly portraying the agenda of that President.

The float depicts a bearded caricature of a man with prominent nose holding a bag of money. Are you saying that would be legitimate criticism and not an overt display of anti-Semitism?

          • Nicholas Russell Harris July 7th, 2014 at 05:20

Keep it coming my friend, a few more examples might allow him to learn.

Try being called n**ger lover or n**ger baby just once any then try not to find this offensive. My grandfather (God rest his soul) was black and this kind of garbage would have offended him (as it does myself) greatly. So much so to the point that he might have written a letter to the ignorant fools and the mayor of that town too.

    • FreedPeopleDescendant July 6th, 2014 at 20:18

Mockery is not criticism. Ross, you need to figure out when you are being manipulated as opposed to being taught. Supremacy is built on the demeaning (be it visually or in writing) of those who appear different.

So you maintain this assertion for his predecessor?

        • FreedPeopleDescendant July 6th, 2014 at 21:04

Yes. There has to be some significance to the depiction that can be applied to some actual acts or policies being implemented (as political satirists do). The only thing I can link to this depiction to is the historical context of blacks being portrayed as poor and uneducated. Neither of those apply to Obama in particular and to blacks in general.

Norfolk, Nebraska is a city of 24,000. I would like to know what function, if any, the city administration played in the planning of this parade. Most cities issue permits for parades. I think the city officials have some explaining to do. I live in a little village of about 3,000 people. A float like this would NOT be permitted.

Your attempt to cover up that you think this racism and disrespect is alright is just deplorable. If you had any mind to dig deeper into this you would spot all of the racist garbage being spewed by those men, and their blatant disregard for decency and the ability to put for their arguments in an intelligent manner.

            • mcalleyboy July 7th, 2014 at 05:54

I agree with you, there’s racism and it goes all a round but minorities use clever words for you Nicholas, they’ll call you Hawley in Hawii or Guam, Kano in the Philippines, if they want to be nice its rare they’ll call you the foreigner but the favorite words they use in the Philippines is Badeng, Buckla, Benny Boy, these refer to somebody that’s gay, all lighter skinned men are considered gay IAW those macho Asians and Latin Americans, they have their own words for us. In a nutshell they’re calling you some pretty bad words behind your back or in front of you while your handing them money or volunteering your valuable time with them. You think you won’t be picked on their country of origin, you’d better think again, it’s much worse.

              • jasperjava July 7th, 2014 at 10:00

There’s a difference between getting called a nickname and being oppressed. White people benefit from a system that is based on an ideology of white supremacy. We know this system still exists, the evidence is all around us, including this racist display in Nebraska.

Being called a haole or a gaijin or a fereng or a cracker or whitey is NOT the same as the “N” word, because the historical and current power relationships are not the same. You benefit from white privilege, whether you want to or not, whether you like it or not.

If your feelings get hurt over a harmless nickname, get over yourself.

I spent 20 years in the military the tests you take for your next higher rate ask you what your race is, the military promotes people this way by race, they’ve been doing it for decades so your talking about some sort of distant past.

You like to think you’re better don’t you? You like to think you’re normal too. You like to think that nothing is wrong with you and that you are right. You like to think, that you can think. Just look around at your life, you’re wrong.

Norfolk, Nebraska is a city of 24,000. I would like to know what function, if any, the city administration played in the planning of this parade. Most cities issue permits for parades. I think the city officials have some explaining to do. I live in a little village of about 3,000 people. A float like this would NOT be permitted.

    • M.C.A. July 6th, 2014 at 21:17

You love rules don’t yaaaa. Nothing wrong with a good ole fashioned knee slapping jaw dropping funny.

      • Guest July 6th, 2014 at 21:24

Is THIS your idea of ” a good ole fashioned knee slapping jaw dropping funny”? Look at all those smiling faces.

        Pretty much sums you up.

        • M.C.A. July 6th, 2014 at 22:27

No…dang that’s a little extreme, see why you became a guest. Hey…don’t forget the President is big into name calling, he can take it after all he shovels it out. I do like the President, he wants us out of the Middle East.

Your attempt to cover up that you think this racism and disrespect is alright is just deplorable. If you had any mind to dig deeper into this you would spot all of the racist garbage being spewed by those men, and their blatant disregard for decency and the ability to put for their arguments in an intelligent manner.

            • M.C.A. July 7th, 2014 at 05:54

I agree with you, there’s racism and it goes all a round but minorities use clever words for you Nicholas, they’ll call you Hawley in Hawii or Guam “Who’s the hawley, what’s he want, why’s he complaining “, Kano in the Philippines, if they want to be nice its rare they’ll call you the foreigner but the favorite words they use in the Philippines is Badeng, Buckla, Benny Boy, these refer to somebody that’s gay, all lighter skinned men are considered gay IAW those macho Asians and Latin Americans, they have their own words for us.

I sent the mayor’ of this town an email after seeing her interviewed on local news- I live in NE- making light of the outrage and saying this was ‘free speech.’. I told her she’d better get a better line than that because by this time next week she is going to be getting deluged with requests for interviews by worldwide news agencies. I also told her that meanwhile the city she leads is going to look like a racist sinkhole to the world and is that what she wants? Nebraska is a state full of nice folks, but they are by and large, clueless about anything and anyone out of their range of experience.

Was there no one in this town objecting to their making themselves look like a bunch of classless, backward inbreds? That is what they have done, and soon most of the world will know it.

The parade celebrated the Declaration of Independence. Not the Declaration of Racism

That’s the brand as the Obama false narrative leadership. The ” It’s What We Call It ” brigade of racial antagonist, who demand racism be served no matter how out of context it begs to differ.

I agree the float crossed the line of humor and it surely disgraced the Office of the Presidency.

So where’s the outrage for the Sal Alinksky Muslim brother who has been disgracing the office for nearly 6 years. The guy whose been taken a dump on the US Contitution, on Congress, Foreign Affairs, the scandals, Bowe Berghdal the Traitor and VA Disgrace. Yeah, he flushed it and he’s covered in crap

    • jasperjava July 7th, 2014 at 01:34

You’re just as bad as those Nebraskan bigots, with your irrational hate of the President based on lies that you so gullibly believe from despicable right-wing sources.

This is the problem with this country: so many people have no critical thinking skills, and only let their hate govern their opinions. President Obama is NOT the caricature that you imagine in your fevered, hate-filled brain.

I wonder if you’re too far gone to even consider that possibility.

      • Nicholas Russell Harris July 7th, 2014 at 05:09

Don’t try to reason with them, the facts only make them spew spittle and more hate. I mean look at how Limbaugh and hia cronies react when you throw the FACTS & TRUTH at them. It is hard to get through to people who have no intention of being reasonable and open to discussion that doesn’t involve them being 100% correct all the damn time.

    • fahvel July 7th, 2014 at 05:21

aren’t you embarrassed to actually expose your stupidity and evil soul on a web page?

Scandals? Compared to previous presidencies (including Reagan’s, Clinton’s, and W’s) the current administration is remarkably scandal-free. Almost all the so-called “scandals” that the Republicans have desperately tried to ignite have been debunked.

I wonder if you’re too far gone to even consider that possibility.

They must think that for all our grandiose and bellicose language about “freedome and acceptance” we really are idiots. Hypocritical inbred idiots.

I am sometimes supremely appalled and disgusted with my fellow human beings.
