Tea Party: Don’t Give Us Your Huddled Masses

When a group is met with

…disdain or anger when they act against the established norm (e.g. when they don’t know or refuse to learn the language)

…it goes directly against the message inscribed on the Statue of Liberty.  When people are willing to risk never seeing their children again just to help them escape squalor, violence and instability, these people deserve a helping hand. The obvious hatred, especially from citizens of areas who largely vote Republican, for Central American refugees comes through loud and clear.  By waving American flags and signs like “return to sender,” these terrified people are greeted with the worst America has to offer: racist, ignorant bigots.

Happy Independence Day used to mean celebrating our freedom by fighting oppression and giving folks a fair chance for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  Hard-working, destitute folks who simply want a chance to live free and raise their families are, like the early 1900’s, met with hateful protest.  Of course, in the late 19th/early 20th centuries, the animosity was directed at Jews and Italians.

The most dramatic case of lynching occurred in 1891 New Orleans, when 11 Italians were lynched by a mob.

Italians, especially more olive-skinned Sicilians, were treated with distrust and hatred.  Sicilian-Americans like Justice Antonin Scalia would never be where he is today if America continued to treat immigrants like filthy refuse.

In Murietta California, the Mayor, Alan Long, urged residents to protest the federal government’s decision to move the recent influx of undocumented, largely Central American women and children, into the Riverside County City. The mayor gave this statement:

“Murrieta expects our government to enforce our laws, including the deportation of illegal immigrants caught crossing our borders, not disperse them into our local communities…”

It is antithetical to the American spirit of inclusiveness and acceptance to publicize these angry xenophobes, especially on this Independence Day.  Thankfully, there’s a counter movement which will hopefully make this trying time for these poor, undocumented people a little more bearable.  Their signs say things like “Americans ARE Immigrants,” which gives us hope our nation isn’t going the way of the Koch Brothers’ hate group, the Tea Party.

They are such a small segment of our population, why do they seem to have such loud voice? I don’t understand, anyone I talk to will say these people are vile and have no understanding of American History and yet every time I read the news, the TP has some story about something that is going against their freedoms. We need to ignore this segment and hopefully they will die off quicker.

      • AnthonyLook July 5th, 2014 at 13:14

We need those minds and hearts and passions like you, to do exactly the opposite- don’t ignore- confront and push back this segment into their racist closet.

        • Suzanne McFly July 5th, 2014 at 13:25

I am a teacher and I don’t just want to push them into a closet, I want to show them how great we are together. I want them to learn not to be afraid and embrace differences, but that seems like a steep climb that will never reach a peak.

That’s a wonderful sentiment; however, that’s like a nice fluffy sheep cuddling up to a wolf laying down for a sheep’s last night sleep.

As the LA Times reports, the protesters showed up last night and are still waiting for buses to wave their signs at, but things are a little different this time:

Protesters are being kept off the road in a “safety zone,” so they can’t block buses– that is, if buses ever show up.

See, the Feddle Gummint’s playing it close to the vest this time, and has not announced where or when the the migrants are arriving, so there may be nothing to wave a sign at except some very sunburned faces.

As well, the anti illegal immigrant protesters are outnumbered this time around by the pro immigration folks, who frankly have better looking signs with cleverer slogans (‘Course that’s just my opinion, man).

It’s 4pm PT as I write this, and protesters have thinned quite a bit by now, and still no migrants to shout at. You can watch them leave, and stay up on the doings in Murrieta, thanks to plucky little Southern California desert rag, The Desert Sun, by following a reporter’s live twittering from the scene.

Unfortunately, these new “huddled masses” will not be paying their own way once they arrive. The single mother from Honduras and her 3 children will go directly on the dole upon their arrival, starting with healthcare at the point of entry. After that,, it will be welfare, food stamps, and Section 8 housing. Why are we supposed to take care of these people and not the government of Honduras?

    • tiredoftea July 4th, 2014 at 22:42

You are a tiresome little bigot.

      • John Tarter July 5th, 2014 at 10:54

You would be right if I were in favor of giving my own ethnic group a pass on coming here illegally, but I am not. Everyone should be treated equally regarding immigration. These new illegalls are not refugees fleeing from a government that is systematically persecuting them like the Nazis were doing to the Jews. They are gaming the system, aided and abetted by the Obama administration in order to undermine our own national sovereignty.

        • tiredoftea July 5th, 2014 at 11:16

Umm, no. But, you just keep on telling us how ignorant you are.

        • AnthonyLook July 5th, 2014 at 13:55

You do not know if these immigrants will qualify for political asylum (probably not and more than likely they will end up being deported); but until then they have the right under the law to “due process”. The illegal behavior in this outburst in Murietta- are those unlawful Bundy clones deciding to obstruct the law.

        • Suzanne McFly July 5th, 2014 at 15:57

You make it seem like they lived lives were they dined nightly on caviar and rode up her on rainbows while they sat on unicorns. In reality, their parents wanted a better life for their children and to do that, their parents gave some schmuck their life savings because they promised to bring their kids to America where they could start a life where they had a chance for a better life than the one they were destined to have where they lived. On the way, many of these kids where raped, beaten, and killed, where is your fake outrage about that?

    • majii July 4th, 2014 at 23:27

You can thank Pres. Bush for the U.S. not being able to turn these migrant kids away. Many of those who are running their mouths about the kids know nothing about what the law says.

The William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008, signed in January 2008 by Pres. Bush prohibits these kids from being deported. I can well imagine that when President Bush signed this law, none of his supporters had anything to say against him doing it, or against the law. According to this law, the migrant kids are under the supervision of the Dept. of Homeland Security and Health and Human Services.

Those who are calling for Pres. Obama to deport these kids are demanding that he break the law, which is something I find very odd since it’s the same individuals who are also accusing him of “overstepping the boundaries of his office.” I don’t think Pres. Obama should break this anti-trafficking law and deport these kids because as soon as he does, those like Issa and others who are demanding these kids be deported would turn around and accuse him of breaking the law. I guess it’s okay with those like Issa and his ilk that this president breaks the laws they want him to break, but as far as I’m concerned, they can go pound sand in hell.

Yep, George Bush, just another president who refused to secure the southern border.

    • William July 5th, 2014 at 00:11

Holy crap on a cookie Wayout… I bet you didn’t see THAT one coming when you were kneeling in front of your radio getting your Limbaugh communion. That’s right, these kids are refugees courtesy of George the second. Do you recall what website you trolled and ranted when that was signed? I’d like to read it.
Now here’s something. My President has doubled the amount of deportations. But, just like everything else, Killing terrorists, jobs and cutting the deficit, my president simply does it better. Don’t let the facts hit you in the ass on your way out, and take with you that big package of fail you walked in with

      • John Tarter July 5th, 2014 at 08:09

Come on Willie, stop believing the Obama propaganda. Continuing to borrow 1Trillion yearly and raising the national debt to 17 trillion I s not cutting anything. Your President has forced millions out of the workforce, added millions onto the government dole, has constantly disregarded the Constitution and has brought us disrespect from his biig talk and no action from other nations around the world. His latest gambit to swell the voter rolls with importing liberal voters in the name of compassion is just another way to “fundamentally transform the nation”. Obama is nothing more than a one man nationhood wrecking ball.

        • William July 5th, 2014 at 12:57

It’s not propaganda Wayout. Actual facts actual graphs and the President complying with a law that was passed by Bush. I find it humorous yet prophetic that your avatar is that of a fat guy who wrote a book on fitness.
About time to change your I.D. for the umpteenth time isn’t it?

Great response William and I love graph. Your statements are right on, but facts don’t penetrate the grey matter on these types, you have to yell and scream about how they are victims of some scandal caused by a black man and then you will see a LOT of response. There is no help for them, but I just wanted to show support for you, good job :)

        • William July 5th, 2014 at 12:54

Right on. If the President DID deport these kids, Issa would be convening a hearing to push for impeachment because the president was ignoring a law Bush passed.

“BLANKET AMNESTIES” Decades of blanket amnesties…that means millions and millions of illegal and undocumented immigrants now qualify for Federal funding, most states will give them food and money anyway, same with church’s who will sponsor these refugee’s in the first place.

    • Saint_Augustine July 5th, 2014 at 04:40

Why, since you gave up living in the United States, should we pay any attention to anything you have to say? Do you get treated as bad in the Philippines?

      • mcalleyboy July 5th, 2014 at 07:53

Living with my wife kids and grand kids, I’d rather live in the US. I had to go through a stack of paper work and requirements in order to live in the Philippines, if you don’t have any money or wealth you end up getting deported, no if ands or butts. I also am not allowed to work here, so that really hurts the bank book.

        • Saint_Augustine July 5th, 2014 at 09:41

So you made the decision to live in a country where your retirement income is sufficient to support your lifestyle versus living where you could work in the aviation industry where you could use the training you received in the Navy and now you are happy?

          • mcalleyboy July 5th, 2014 at 21:20

yes, who wants to keep working?

            • Saint_Augustine July 6th, 2014 at 05:07

So you’re a taker? The USA gave you the opportunity to work for 20 years then receive a lifetime pension and in gratitude you leave the country and move to where you can’t work. That’s being a real patriot, isn’t it?

              • mcalleyboy July 6th, 2014 at 06:00

In a nut shell your right but I worked for 7 years in a call center selling vitamins and supplements, learned allot, I have a vast knowledge could be real helpful, trouble is the wife didn’t want to live in the US, no fun living alone, right?

                • Saint_Augustine July 6th, 2014 at 08:21

Mark, I think you have the right to make the choices you’ve made in life but you have no basis for your holier-than-thou attitude about others whose lives have been impacted by forces beyond their control and then take actions to change their situation.

What if, for some reason, your retirement pay was canceled, would you not have to leave the Philippines to get a job to support your family? Where would you go? Would another country want you? Would they want you and your family?

I’m still in a quandary as to why you haven’t made use of the skills you had as an E-6? Isn’t there some other location in SE Asia where you could live and work using those skills?

                  • mcalleyboy July 6th, 2014 at 21:14

If caught working I got to jail from 6 months – 3 years pay a fine of over $200 and get deported. They do have expats that own business or work for their business but they don’t hire Americans. I have a skill that could possibly get me a job in Iraq fixing H-46 helicopters but I have no license, they require an A&P license funny but the military didn’t have that requirement or program. I do need a job and want to work but as you can see my grammar’s not so good.

I have a skill that could possibly get me a job in Iraq fixing H-46 helicopters but I have no license, they require an A&P license funny but the military didn’t have that requirement or program. I do need a job and want to work but as you can see my grammar’s not so good.

Good Lord, I hope these poor kids don’t try to learn any English from the protesters.

    This story makes no sense.

This story is beginning to look suspicious. I recall first seeing articles about the influx of immigrant children going back about two months on conservative blogs and hearing about it on conservative talk radio. Then the situation began to escalate and increase, as if it conveniently played into a tea party narrative being conspired and manipulated. How do thousands of children immigrants come to make the long trek across all of Central America through Mexico into the United States, how much money did it take to fund such an enormous undertaking. There is no way that these many families from these countries had anywhere near the funds to have the outcome that has manifested. Money had to have come from elsewhere. There is no reason for any drug cartel to benefit from such an adventure, there is no government that would fund such an enormous migration. Who would stand to gain by creating this situation. Who would have the money and who would have a reason to go these lengths. Who would make this possible and for what political gain. Certainly there is no other reason, no one is making money with this situation and why were children targeted– parents don’t relinquish their children without some reasonable assurances, not in these numbers, not these many children. Something other than rumors had a hand in creating this influx, someone other than some charlatan convinced parents to entrust their children onto them. Why have we not investigated these families, the money trail, the ones transporting and being paid for transporting and by whom.Just a thought. There is no overwhelming change in the countries where these children are coming from that would cause such a large migration. There has been no economic collapse, the economies have sucked for years and continue; there has been no revolution/ civil war or war in general; there has been no more crime than there has already been. There is no political motivation for this specific migration to be happening. Now consider; people pay up’s of 10, 000 dollars or more per person to immigrate through regular illegal channels. There is no way- TEN OF THOUSANDS of children’s parents all simultaneously had this much money and further NO ONE is doing this for free or at a discount. This migration was a concerted effort, planned and executed in these large numbers. A lot of hands had to be greased for them to travel from El Salvador, Guatemala, Columbia…; and through Mexico. This was seamless, has been happening without a hitch. Now, why children— that’s the oddest thing of all— who would benefit from making that decision exclusively (there is a smatter of mother, but largely teenage children and below). Why not just anyone, why not adults. That of and it itself seems especially peculiar. It is as if it was a calculated forethought. So why children; maybe because they have to be detained and deported since they can’t be released. They certainly can’t disappear into the mix and get a job and survive. Maybe it was because precisely they were more manageable with the afterthought that they would be readily deported. Maybe children were selected because the powers that created this situation wanted to manipulate the tea partiers into a frenzy so they can take the heat for deporting children. Something about this puzzle doesn’t fit, something about this stinks. None of it makes sense, not the migration, not the reasons, not the money, not the children and certainly not why parents would entrust known transporters that have a history of just killing those they transport at times. Someone has spent a lot of money to make this happen.

you and I dont agree about much, but I happen to agree with this statement. Something is going on….

And your right, there has been no cataclysmic change in these home countries. If anything, they have been getting better over the past several years.

      • AnthonyLook July 5th, 2014 at 13:34

Color me impressed, the reason we agree on this is because something fishy is glaring at both of us. There is something missing, rather several things are missing to connect the dots to make sense out of this. Someone is funding this move.

You have only to look to the US economy to answer your question. We have left behind a recession which saw a corresponding decrease in immigration, and the recovery has brought a corresponding increase in immigration.

And I think you underestimate the determination of our plucky migrants. It doesn’t cost tens of thousands of dollars to swim across a river in the hope of finding a mythical land where it’s raining jobs and money (that’d be the US), it requires will and determination.

Frankly, I have an admiration for every migrant I’ve ever met (and here in LA, I’ve met a lot!). It takes a lot to leave home, regardless.

You are wrong it does cost thousands to make this move and your mocking “swim across a river” is mighty white of you.

Conservatives are on the wrong side of history once again.
They were wrong about slavery, wrong about women voting, wrong about segregation, wrong about the civil rights act, wrong about worker safety in the union movement, wrong about prohibition, wrong about the voters rights act, wrong about the Iraq war, wrong about healthcare and they are wrong again on immigration reform.
    What a bunch of losers.
