Will The Federal Government Ever Stand Up To Racist Bigots?

The crisis created by our broken immigration system and children fleeing violence in Central America reached a dramatic fever pitch on Tuesday, as anti-immigrant protesters physically attempted to block buses headed for a Border Patrol center in Murrieta, California. Not to be messed with, immigration officials arrested the protesters, and the buses continued on their way.

Oh, wait, sorry, that’s what happens when people try to protest deportations. If you’re a pissed-off mob of bigoted anti-immigrant xenophobes, you get your way. Three buses, containing about 140 immigration detainees (mostly women and children) who fled Central America for our southern border, were turned away from the Border Patrol station in Murrieta, California by a mob of about 150 protesters, who chanted “Go home!”, “We want to be safe,” and, of course, “USA! USA!”

Still, maybe they were all just patriotic Americans with a legitimate police gripe, and not a bunch of racist assholes. Or maybe not:

Lupillo Rivera, 42, of Temecula, said he was driving by when he noticed the protest. He said somebody shouted that he was an illegal immigrant and should go home.

Rivera, a well-known Mexican banda singer who is a U.S. citizen, went home and returned with several of his friends and bandmates to confront the protesters.

Maybe he should have shown them his papers…READ MORE

Hmm. So the protesters blocking the bus should have been arrested? Or the illegal immigrants should not have been arrested (for, you know, not being illegal)? I’m trying to decide…

    • Billy Jackson July 3rd, 2014 at 12:37

The bus should have kept moving and run over the idiots too dumb to get the f out of the way.

Then, the illegals should have been processed and deported.

      • R.J. Carter July 3rd, 2014 at 12:47

I’ve said that about every Occupy and Greenpeace demonstration. Another point we agree on!

      Refugees are not illegal.

      • Debra Watkins July 3rd, 2014 at 13:20

        Refugees

Refugee status is a form of protection that may be granted to people who meet the definition of refugee and who are of special humanitarian concern to the United States. Refugees are generally people outside of their country who are unable or unwilling to return home because they fear serious harm. For a legal definition of refugee, see section 101(a)(42) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

You may seek a referral for refugee status only from outside of the United States. For more information about refugees, see the “Refugees” section.

Yes, and? These people are, in fact, fleeing violence. Violence that, if you trace it back, is largely thanks to our imperialistic interference in Central and South America.

          • Debra Watkins July 3rd, 2014 at 13:45

You think they all have referrals for refugee status?

            • Rusty Shackleford July 3rd, 2014 at 13:48

Ideologically, I think they shouldn’t have to. Pragmatically, I think it is within law enforcement’s power to delegate where they focus their efforts and resources, and I don’t see deporting people fleeing violence as something worthy of high priority.

              • Debra Watkins July 3rd, 2014 at 15:34

So maybe you could put a few people up at your place? Got room? Can you afford to feed, clothe, house them? Take them to all their court dates? Assist with their legal fees? Help to educate them? Provide for their medical care? Pay for their folks to join them and put them up too? Just wondering.

There was back in the eighties, you’ll recall, a huge uptick in Salvadoran immigrants, who invariably told me what a swell country the US is.

I just didn’t have the heart to tell them we’re the reason you had to leave home in the first place.

if the economy fails, government is bankrupt there goes my pension then what, I can’t fish, I have few skills if any and the pay here is so low that creating business is a waste of time, nobody has money and they pay almost nothing for services, this includes skilled work. Going wage for a full days job is $1.50

      • mcalleyboy July 3rd, 2014 at 22:17

They should be, church groups bring them in, many of the states have been flooded with Bosnians, Somali, it gets old already, if you don’t agree live in an apartment complex with Somali’s or try dealing with Bosnians, don’t make broad brush statements about something you won’t deal with.

    • ChrisVosburg July 3rd, 2014 at 16:04

Good grief. The illegal immigrants had been arrested, and were on their way to a Border Patrol processing station.

There, they are processed prior to deportation (or maybe not, depending, but still it’s a necessary step), and it is a complicated process. Identity and Country of Origin must be determined (usually they’re not carrying any ID), and if they are to be deported, the appropriate consulate will be persuaded to issue a passport. Serious, you need a Honduras passport to be deported to Honduras.

Lotta work, and if these brave migrant hating patriots want that to happen, they be better served by getting the hell out the way of the damn bus, and letting the nice Border Patrol do their damn jobs.

      Idiots, the lot of ’em.

    • AnthonyLook July 3rd, 2014 at 22:09

The immigrants were under the prevue of legal custody and the legal status of “due process”, which the blocking protestors illegally prevented. The lengths you go to defend racism is astounding.

    • Carla Akins July 4th, 2014 at 13:42

Long and short of it – no one should be arrested for pretesting unless they break the law. Textbook st amendment. However, if people (those witnessing the protest) wish to judge the protesters on their behavior – then they should have considered that before they started. Everyone is welcome to their opinion, there is no requirement for anyone to agree or not vilify you for it.

Regardless of the movement, you should not be allowed to impede the process of people going about their day, nor should be be able to block a public road.

Homeless guys walking along the freeway are often arrested, so there should be no exception for a dozen bigots blocking the highway. And, as I said, that goes for everyone else. Stand in your appointed protest spot, say your dumb shit, and let everyone just trying to go about their lives, do so without being bombarded with stupid.

              • ChrisVosburg July 3rd, 2014 at 16:34

No, I can’t– I live in small digs in Hollywood that aren’t even big enough for me, and no ICE agent in their right mind would place such a child with me.

The larger point of course, is the one I made. If the US truly wants to alleviate the flow of migrants into this country, one way to do it is to stop doing shit that drives them outta their own country, and start doing things to alleviate the grinding poverty that sends ’em up here.

Your cite is relevant to nothing. Nice display of unbridled bigotry, though.

    • Robert M. Snyder July 3rd, 2014 at 18:54

Has anyone ever polled people of Native American heritage to find out what they actually think about present-day immigration? Considering how immigration worked out for their ancestors, it seems unlikely that they would be strongly in favor of unrestricted immigration today. Would they welcome unlimited numbers of newly-arriving immigrants onto Indian reservations?

      • Flspeedy July 3rd, 2014 at 20:04

They’d probably prefer today’s immigrants to the original bunch. At least the present day’s immigrants aren’t going to steal their ancestral lands , and give them smallpox infested blankets to “keep warm”.

Most of the inhabitants of Central America and Mexico are the descendants of Spaniards who conquered the indigenous Aztec and Mayan civilizations. Smallpox, measles, and influenza are estimated to have wiped out over 50% of the native population of the Yucatan peninsula and the Guatemalan highlands.

These new arrivals are bringing in diseases that will require long term medical care and all this costs money. But of course you liberals will not be taking up a collection of your own private money to pay for it all. Once on the dole that is where they will stay and when you libs start agitating for family reunification, the welfare rolls Will grow even more.

Please don’t be naive. You remember during government shut-down all non-essential federal government workers were told not to show up for work. These included VA employees such as front desk schedulers, part-time nurses and part- time doctors, janitors, and some in Emergency room. Cruz, Boehner, Ryan, Cantor, McConnell and others wanted to defeat Obamacare. That’s why during the government shut-down VA hospitals was really filthy and lost scheduling time after the Repubs opened the government again. Somebody has to sue these Repubs for causing this harm to our Veterans.

So long as there is FoxNews and Limbaugh racism will never end. This people continue brain-washing people to believe people of other races are inferior to them. These people like Bill O’rielly, Sean Hannity, Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Eric Bolling and Charles Krauthammer are the engineers of racism in this country. They have been hurting since 2009 when President Obama because the Leader Of The Free World. So their job has been to pump hatred in gullible Americans to hate people of other races. I know God will never allow them into heaven.

Most of these protestors were not even from the area, they are part of a group who are anti-immigrant and this protest was planned so they could be seen on nightly news and stir up the hate they are creating. These nuts will never be part of a healthy discussion to deal with this problem that has been an American issue since 1492 and if your ancestors were not here before 1492, then you have an immigrant past and you need to deal with the hate you feel for yourself.

Taking more people in is not my wish, however the more people you have, the more jobs you need to support them. Have you noticed that when you have higher populations you also have more service workers, teachers, doctors, businesses,…etc. And when these people are given some sort of citizenship, then they are taxed and that money goes to paying for these jobs and our infrastructure. You act like immigrants haven’t been a part of our past, it has worked for over a 1,000 years, why all the sudden won’t it work this time? Skin color have something to do with it?

These kids all have parents who are trying to save their kids. This is about as disgusting as America gets….and that now includes you.

Read why they’re sending their kids here.

Hah..cushy world of social services. Try living off them sometime.

      You embarrass the country.

      I suppose you’re a Christian too.

Every day I see more and more Americans like you that embarrass this country. You would never have seen crowds like this yelling at poor children before the Bush Republicans.
We were always known for taking care of people and being compassionate. The USA, USA that they holler is not the USA I fought for.

I even think I saw Jesus in the crowd. Oh,,,wait, he was on the bus looking at this crowd and most comments here in disgust.

These are today’s Christians in America. Yelling at some of the poorest people in the world and telling them to get out.
I’m not in the least religious but tell me, Christians, who in this picture are the ones going to hell? The people yelling at the poor and telling them to get out or the poor people on the bus?
If you have to think about it at all, you know nothing about Christianity or even compassion or what this country has always stood for.
Even I remember “What you do to the least of us, you do to me.”

I’m gonna have to ask you to pony some money for this endeavor, how much you willing to give up of your wallet, reach deep into your pockets and lets see the love. Carriers run on nuclear power, no need to waste fuel, just food and clothes. I live in a foreign country, ain’t nobody here gonna give the American any compassion you need to know this.

Hah…yet you don’t seem to mind giving the richest people and the richest corporations huge amounts of your money. While you complain about the poor, those guys are buying more and more multi-million dollar yachts and mansions with your money.
You’ve simply bought the fascist Koch agenda of blaming the poor for your problems. It’s an age old ploy that has destroyed nations.
This could be explained to you a hundred different ways but you seem pretty content with understanding little.

              • mcalleyboy July 4th, 2014 at 22:37

I watched an interview with a Billionaire and reporter the reporter mentioned that they have Billions of dollars while the poor have no food ect… the Billionaires reply….isn’t it great!…. the reporter was shocked and then the Billionaire went to explain that if you give the poor money they just spend it, throw it away, buy cars, fancy clothes eat out, they don’t know what to do with the money but a Billionaire does he’s a Billionaire the create business and jobs, he’s right. The West throws away millions sometimes billions away on 3rd world countries but get this, they have money the politicians hoard it along with several other government agencies that fall under the government and in a disaster they look for the Americans to bring in all their wealth and money, politicians love and so the do the people, it needs to be a real disaster…no help….with that the people will start to get angry and demand more from their elected corrupt leaders.

            • mcalleyboy July 4th, 2014 at 22:32

John I don’t hear this enough, it’s lacking on this board, these people have no clue how badly were getting played by these countries. I live in the Philippines and all that aid money went to corruption, it barely trickled down to the poor people, these are the ones that were targeted for help. Those in charge of government (typhoon hit area’s) also picked up the food the helicopters dropped, one American expat mentioned that this was wrong and he was threatened with his life. To be fair the Philippines is crack down on these corrupt individuals and guess where they are fleeing? The US….LOL.

        • lindsncal July 4th, 2014 at 15:54

I’ll donate whatever the percentage of my taxes that go to..
The interest on Reagan and bush’s debt
The money being spent in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The money being spent on abstinence only programs in schools.
The tax money going to churches and religious organizations and think tanks that are politically active. The Kochs get a lot of that with all their tax free ghost orgs.

It’s as if you didn’t read anything I sent.

Undocumented immigrants do not get social welfare.

              From 2012 Tax Receipts:
If you make $50,000 a year, you pay: $247.75 a year for defense, $3.98 for natural disaster (rising fast), $22.88 for

How do they survive then? undocumented workers, you can’t survive in the US with out help the US is a very expensive place to live. State social services take up this slack not the Federal government. I’m not blocking you, it’s a conversation and an understanding why so many undocumented come here “Blanket Amnesties” come on, this has happened over and over again “decades” now they qualify, isn’t it great, millions and millions of illegals with a sweep of the pen become legalized for social benefits, reason some Americans would like to keep them out.

      • John Tarter July 4th, 2014 at 07:13

Finally someone mentioned the parents, and yes, just where are the parents? It is shameful that they are unloading THEIR kids on us and requiring us to pick up the tab. Why aren’t they being rancially responsible for the children THEY brought into the world?

        • lindsncal July 4th, 2014 at 15:20

You don’t seem to have a clue about what’s going on the countries these kids come from.
The parents are literally trying to save their kid’s lives.

What scam? Are these children not fleeing a desperate situation where their is no food, 90% of the population live below the extreme poverty level, average a 3rd grade eduction and dodging bullets are part of their daily routine. Have you been to Central America? Outside of the tourist areas? Most homes (huts) have no windows or doors, the do not have indoor plumbing or electricity. Very, very small children work in gardens outside the home for food, and adolescents walk miles daily to the single public bus to get them to a factory that pays pennies for unsafe adult type work 12 hours a day. THis is not a region or small remote community, this is the entire country. And again, undocumented people do not qualify for social services and benefits.

      • mcalleyboy July 4th, 2014 at 20:19

Thats’ nothing new, so as a whole Central America has no place for these kids but America? Carla you should see how many Somalian immigrants, refugee’s we have in the state of ND, I no longer live there but. Another poster thinks that illegals don’t qualify for funding…I beg to differ, they get by from churches, state agencies do help so does the Federal government, look at the bus loads of illegals, they are all getting food and clothes, place to stay and we pay for it.

I agree there needs to be a plan in place for refuges from these countries – mostly because no human should be treated in such a manner. If you don’t recognize your home state due to the number of refuges, it should be an opportunity to learn more about the world. These are not terrorists, but scared, poor, desperate people simply trying to survive.

            • Carla Akins July 4th, 2014 at 22:52

You’re telling me adults from other countries do not understand the difference between right and wrong – I’m sorry but I don’t believe that for a minute. Do you have sources to back up that claim?

The culture may be different, but each one I’ve known has gone to extraordinary lengths to learn our culture and abide by the law and social norms There are so few unauthorized immigrants in the Dakotas they don’t even make the list. http://www.statemaster.com/graph/peo_est_num_of_ill_imm-people-estimated-number-illegal-immigrants

I can find no program that offers these folks vehicles. Those from African countries are here as refugees from an intolerable living condition, they gear for their lives. We, as a country welcome these refugees because the horror the have lived with is beyond our comprehension.

The state does not set them up in apartments. jobs, clothes and vehicles – the church and other charitable organizations may as they recognise the horror of their previous existence.

The federal government offers tax breaks for this offering jobs to the underserved an unemployed but it’s not limited to unauthorized workers only.

  20. M.C.A. July 3rd, 2014 at 22:07

Are you completely nutz? How can you get away with writing this article like it’s a matter of fact? It’s about time Americans stand up to scammers, this won’t end, these kids all have clever parents that want in to the cushy world of social services and skilled labor jobs.

    • lindsncal July 4th, 2014 at 02:41

These kids all have parents who are trying to save their kids. This is about as disgusting as America gets….and that now includes you.

Read why they’re sending their kids here.

Hah..cushy world of social services. Try living off them sometime.

      You embarrass the country.
      I suppose you’re a Christian too.

Every day I see more and more Americans like these that embarrass this country. You would never have seen crowds like this yelling at poor children before the Bush Republicans who seem to feed off hate.
We were always known for taking care of people and being compassionate. The USA, USA that they holler is not the USA I fought for.

I even think I saw Jesus in the crowd. Oh, wait, he was on the bus looking at this crowd in disgust and he was taking names.

This is how republicans work. And you fall for it every time because you don’t know how to read or think.

Republicans: ‘Obama needs to close the borders”
Obama : ‘Ok, but I need the money to do it.”
Republicans: ‘No, we’re not going to give it to you and we refuse to discuss it.”
Obama: “Then there isn’t much I can do.”
Republicans: “See, Obama isn’t doing anything.”

Time for you to figure out who the real scammers are who take advantage of little bitty minds like yours because you make it so easy for them.

      • M.C.A. July 4th, 2014 at 03:58

Nice rant…So lindncal, how much money are you willing to put up? You have the talk, how much of your savings would you like to donate for the cause of saving the world and daily basis? Just curious, how much can you donate to this cause.

        • fahvel July 4th, 2014 at 06:47

One goddamned jet plane price could feed and clothe them all. Ther us military sucks the nation dry in response to make believe but well established fear. You fella are an ass without a touch of compassion.

          • M.C.A. July 4th, 2014 at 07:01

This happens every single day, man your out of touch with whats going on in your world, it’s not just a couple people every now and then it’s every single day, thousands cross.

            • Stan Ubeki July 4th, 2014 at 09:50

So if you live in a foreign country, don’t pay taxes or vote in the US, then STFU.

              • M.C.A. July 4th, 2014 at 20:29

I live on a pension it’s enough for taxes, can’t help it the wife wanted to live abroad with her family, I worked for 7 more years after retirement and got lonely, no fun living and working in the US by yourself and the family is abroad in a house I built years ago, makes no sense.

                • Senor July 5th, 2014 at 05:46

So you are a bitter old fuck, which is the same reason why your wife wanted to “live abroad with her family”

          • John Tarter July 4th, 2014 at 07:20

Hey, why am I being forced to pay for someone else’s kids? I paid to raise my own and now that they are on their own I’d really like to keep MY MONEY IN MY OWN POCKET. Who died and made you the recorder of things?

            • lindsncal July 4th, 2014 at 16:21

Hah…yet you don’t seem to mind giving the richest people and the richest corporations huge amounts of your money. While you complain about the poor, those guys are buying more and more multi-million dollar yachts and mansions with your money.
You’ve simply bought the fascist Koch agenda of blaming the poor for your problems. It’s an age old ploy that has destroyed nations.
This could be explained to you a hundred different ways but you seem pretty content with understanding little.

              • M.C.A. July 4th, 2014 at 22:37

            • M.C.A. July 4th, 2014 at 22:32

The interest on Reagan and bush’s debt. The bush tax cuts to the rich are still the biggest portion of our debt.
The money being spent in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The money being spent on abstinence only programs in schools.
          The bloated military budget.
The tax money going to churches and religious organizations and think tanks that are politically active. The Kochs get a lot of that with all their tax free ghost orgs.
The huge amount of my tax money that goes to corporate subsidies and tax breaks, loopholes, etc.
The tax money going to Issa and republicans for their ridiculous ‘scandal investigations’
          You want more???

You don’t seem to realize that it’s not about how much individuals donate. The country is not broke by any means, however…all the money is in the hands of very top and especially the top 1% who get most of new income in the country.

You, like them, want to put the responsibility, as usual, on the people who now have little money and even less voice left.

Learn who your enemies are before trying to find fault with those among us who have little… for not doing enough.

And..it’s not about saving the world. It’s about humanity and compassion, you know, the things this country used to be known for.

What about lost jobs, these immigrants and refugee’s ….. employers get tax breaks from the Federal Government, were you aware of that? it hurts those that don’t go to college and have no skills, I worked in a call center for 7 years all the refugee’s, immigrants worked in the back, shipping area, these guys got help with vehicles from the state of ND, they wouldn’t buy Ford or Chevy but BMW, Mercedes and other high priced cars (Bosnians/Asians), the Somalies would buy brand new compact fuel efficient cars, not big names though, so more conservative. Churches bring them such as the “Luthern Social Services” and the state sets them up with an apartment, car and clothes…..HELLO DOLLY! then they get set up with a job that a high school kid should have got with health care benefits.
