Not entirely. After the September 11 attacks Iran expressed sympathy towards the United States, and offered military assistance to fight against the Taliban and al Qaeda, who they considered to be enemies.

Some low-level diplomatic progress was being made with Iran, until Dubya lumped them in with their arch-enemy Saddam Hussein (and, bizarrely, the North Koreans) into his “Axis of Evil”. That’s when moderate Iranian leaders lost clout domestically, and hardliners like Mahmoud Ahmedinejahd came to power. Any rapprochement between the US and Iran was put on hold.

That’s what happens when you let your speechwriters formulate policy, for the sake of a semi-clever phrase. Thanks, David Frum!

Frum was fired soon after that, because his wife Danielle Crittenden publicly bragged that “Axis of Evil” was his contribution to the “president’s” speech. You don’t get to steal the “president’s” thunder, even if it’s stupid thunder.

Iran cooperating with USA against iraqi insurgent “ISIL” is yet another peace dividend delivered by the Obama Doctrine forcing Iran to peacefully surrender all enriched uranium above 5% in exchange for lifting US, EU & UN IAEA economic sanctions.
