After a woman told Christie he seemed “smaller,” the governor replied “Let’s not be totally unfair, I am much less relevant now than I used to be. I used to be much more important.”
Christie added that his wife tells him he needs to buy new suits so he can look good at Hillary Clinton’s inauguration in 2016.
“But I’m on a budget,” he said, “I gotta be careful, you know? I’m going to be out of office and have to work for a living.”
The governor underwent self-imposed political career defenestration in February 2013. At one time considered to be the 800 lb. gorilla in the room, the loss of his political relevance in GOP politics has sometimes made him the butt of jokes, including at this year’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
“Governor, do you want bridge jokes or ‘how you screwed yourself out of the White House’ jokes? ‘Cause I’ve got a bunch of both. I could go half and half. I know you like a combo platter,” comedian Joel McHale said, throwing in a reference to the scandal surrounding lane closures on the George Washington Bridge.
The governor told Vanity Fair at an after party that McHale’s jabs didn’t faze him.
“It really doesn’t matter any more,” the governor said between sobs.
