How’s The Pope Upsetting Conservatives Today?

Pope Francis may be breathing new life into the Catholic Church worldwide, but U.S. conservatives haven’t been too pleased. There was that nod towards tolerance of gays, the whole thing about uplifting the poors and how “inequality is the root of social evil“, and he’s even thrown shade on fundamentalist Christians’ extremism and inflexibility. In just a few short months, Francis has hit most of the left’s filthy hippie causes. What’s next? Hey, how about a full-throated call for action on climate change? Yes, please! Think Progress has the story:

Pope Francis made the religious case for tackling climate change on Wednesday, calling on his fellow Christians to become “Custodians of Creation” and issuing a dire warning about the potentially catastrophic effects of global climate change.

Speaking to a massive crowd in Rome, the first Argentinian pope delivered a short address in which he argued that respect for the “beauty of nature and the grandeur of the cosmos” is a Christian value, noting that failure to care for the planet risks apocalyptic consequences.

“Safeguard Creation,” he said. “Because if we destroy Creation, Creation will destroy us! Never forget this!” …

Francis also said that humanity’s destruction of the planet is a sinful act, likening it to self-idolatry.

Today’s statement came “on the heels of a five-day summit on sustainability convened at the Vatican earlier this month.”  Did someone say Agenda 21?

Most Catholics already are placated and conservatives who are conspiracy theorists are only a fringe group. So ticking them off is no big deal and will simply add to the effect the church wants to achieve.

This is again a distraction to placate the rest and it continues to work. These are much like the tactics used by conservative echo chambers control their base, to keep them on on point. It’s interesting how these tactics work just as effectively on people of all stripes, including the ones that claim conservatives are easily brainwashed.

    Confirmation bias is powerful.

He’s got a ways to go on women’s issues but baby steps in the right direction.

Keep dreaming, there will be no women priests and the Pope will never condone the killing of babies.

        I think Tarter’s sauced.

So the Pope has joined with those who believe that man can actually destroy the earth. In addition to all our other expenses what does the Holy Father want us to do, throw millions of tax dollars down the rathole of central planning to deal with something that all that money might not be able to change in any meaningful way? I’ll pass on that one thank you very much.

Those who do not believe that man can actually destroy the earth should take a trip to mainland China, and take a deep breath. Then after you are discharged from the hospital, let us know if you still have the same opinion.

To my way of thinking, destroying the air we breathe does qualify as destroying the planet. Also to my way of thinking, breathing is a higher priority than money, no matter how many millions of dollars must be thrown down the “rathole” to make sure that the air does not poison people.

Thank goodness right wingers have not prevailed on environmental policy, because China is what we would be if they had.

Beijing air pollution at dangerously high levels

BEIJING (AP) — Beijing’s skyscrapers receded into a dense gray smog Thursday as the capital saw the season’s first wave of extremely dangerous pollution, with the concentration of toxic small particles registering more than two dozen times the level considered safe.

The air took on an acrid odor, and many of the city’s commuters wore industrial strength face masks as they hurried to work.

Man can certainly change the environment, for better or for worse. We have been changing it for the worse for profits in recent history. It is time to give up those profits for quality of life and change the environment for the better. Greedy people may not like it but survival is more important than anything else.

John, I am assuming you follow the pope. FYI -The Papal infallibility extends to matters of faith, only. Science, in this case economic, is not included.

I see we have the paid skeptics on board.

A man can’t see a fact his paycheck depends on him not seeing.

For those of us that followed the other popes. Only a few thing different. The one awesome difference is this pope is in the media.
