Flight 370: Reality Clashes with Fantasy

First, the reality . . .

Time is quickly running out for international search teams to locate the black box or automated flight data recorder from Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. The flight data recorder contains a battery-powered acoustic beacon that emits a continuous “ping” for approximately 30 days after a crash. Once the batteries go dead and the pinging stops, the search for wreckage becomes much more difficult. But not impossible.

Air France Flight 447’s flight data recorder was found roughly two years after it went down at a depth of two miles in the Atlantic Ocean. The flight recorder revealed the aircraft had crashed due to an unfortunate combination of pilot error and inaccurate airspeed measurements caused by ice crystals obstructing the aircraft’s pitot tubes. The autopilot disconnected, the crew reacted incorrectly and the aircraft went into a stall from which it did not recover.

And now the fantasy . . .

As you might guess, the conspiracy mongers are all over Flight 370. Alex Jones, who has blamed everything from the Oklahoma City bombings to 9-11 to Sandy Hook to the Boston Marathon bombings on the United States government, has more than a few theories.

In one of Jones’ theories, the plane was hijacked and landed safely in some undisclosed location. In this scenario, the hostages are being held for ransom by the kidnappers. In another scenario, Jones suggests Flight 370 could be sitting on the ground in Iran and is being converted into a flying nuclear, chemical or biological weapon.

On April 1st, Jones was a guest on Coast to Coast AM with George Noory, a syndicated radio show that specializes in pseudoscience, the paranormal and conspiracy theories. Noory told Jones of his belief that Flight 370 is on the ground somewhere. Jones opined that Flight 370 is a “brain heist,” as, according to Jones, a number of important patent holders were passengers on the plane.

Let us hope this mystery is solved. Doing so will help provide closure to the families. Analysis of the flight data recorders may help prevent another passenger aircraft from suffering the same fate. And, hopefully, it may allow Flight 370 to escape the endless machinations of the professional conspiracy mongers.
