Texas Primary Wrap-Up: Davis, Cornyn, And A New Bush
- Governor (D) — Wendy Davis “is officially the Democratic nominee for governor, the Associated Press reports. Davis, the clear frontrunner throughout the race, defeated perennial candidate Ray Madrigal in Tuesday’s primary. Davis, who emerged on the national scene during her filibuster of an abortion bill last summer, is the first female gubernatorial candidate in the Lone Star State since 1994.”
- Governor (R) — Greg Abbott ” is the first new Republican nominee for the state’s governor in more than a decade. Abbott coasted Tuesday night to a primary victory against three largely unknown challengers. The win had been considered a foregone conclusion since Abbott announced his bid to replace Gov. Rick Perry, who isn’t seeking re-election after 14 years.”
- In the Lieutenant Governor race, Democratic state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte won her party’s nod; on the GOP side, Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst and state Sen. Dan Patrick head for a runoff.
- Senate (D) — With 72% of votes counted, David Alameel led in a field of five candidates with 54% of the vote as of 11:30PM local time, but there are still a large number of urban areas that have yet to report. Kesha Rogers, a Larouchie who managed to get on the ballot and has been campaigning on calling for President Obama’s impeachment, is presently in second place with 19%. If it goes to a runoff, it will be ugly. UPDATE: Alameel and Rogers to face off in runoff.
- Senate (R) — Incumbent John Cornyn “has crushed tea party-backed U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman and six lesser-known primary challengers to win Texas’ Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. As party whip, Cornyn is second in the GOP Senate leadership. He is the overwhelming favorite to win his third term in office during November’s general election. Cornyn has been dubbed too moderate by a small group of tea party activists. He faced a last-minute challenge from the right by Stockman, a fierce conservative and House renegade.”
- Land Commissioner (R) — George P. Bush “beat conservative David Watts in the primary for Texas land commissioner, marking Bush’s first big contest as he launches what many political observers expect to be a must-watch career in politics. Bush, who was considered the favorite going in to the primary and is favored to win in November, is the son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, nephew of former President George W. Bush and grandson of former President George H.W. Bush.”
